Hello, Hive friends, how's it going?
What is the dynamic of an open-air agricultural market in the middle of the street like?
That was one of the questions I asked myself this week... and also one of my challenges. I've always been a little curious about going into one of those places with my camera. I don't know, maybe because of the hustle and bustle, the tension in the air, or because I simply felt that photographers weren't welcome. But anyway, something came out of that foray. It wasn't easy, but I managed to capture some scenes that I want to share with you.
¿Cómo es la dinámica de un mercado agropecuario al aire libre, en plena calle?
Esa fue una de las preguntas que me hice esta semana... y también uno de mis desafíos. Siempre me dio un poco de curiosidad entrar con la cámara a uno de esos lugares. No sé, quizás por el bullicio, por la tensión que se respira, o porque simplemente sentía que los fotógrafos no eran bienvenidos. Pero bueno, algo salió de esa incursión. No fue fácil, pero logré atrapar algunas escenas que quiero compartirles.
So, I plucked up my courage.
Why did I feel it was a challenge? Well, markets are a kind of battlefield: buyers are in a hurry, on the defensive, afraid they won't have enough money... and sellers are also stressed, looking after their own, paranoid that they will be robbed or swindled. In the midst of all that, a photographer is suspicious. Who are you taking pictures of? Why? Who sent you?
Entonces, me armé de valor.
¿Por qué lo sentía como un reto? Bueno, los mercados son una especie de campo de batalla: el que compra anda apurado, a la defensiva, con miedo a que no le alcance el dinero... y el que vende también anda estresado, cuidando lo suyo, con la paranoia de que le roben o lo estafen. En medio de todo eso, un fotógrafo resulta sospechoso. ¿A quién le estás tirando fotos? ¿Para qué? ¿Quién te mandó?
So, as expected, I didn't go unnoticed for even a second. Right away, a couple of curious people approached me to ask what I was doing, why I was taking pictures.
My tactic: play dumb—as we say around here—make up some excuse, smile, and quietly go on my way.
Así que, como era de esperarse, no pasé ni un segundo desapercibido. Enseguida se me acercaron un par de curiosos a preguntarme qué hacía, por qué fotografiaba.
Mi táctica: hacerme el bobo —como decimos por aquí—, soltar una excusa cualquiera, sonreír, y seguir mi camino sin mucho ruido.
