I Closed My Last Account on a Centralised Exchange: I've Taken Full Control of My Assets
My experience with exchanges and centralized platforms has never been great.
It's true—they make it very easy to buy and swap one cryptocurrency for another, and allow you to manage many assets from a single account, having everything conveniently at your fingertips... but there are also many downsides.
First and foremost is the need to provide your identity documents on all those platforms with mandatory KYC — Know Your Customer — procedures, which has never made me feel comfortable. If the platform gets hacked or shuts down, who could end up with my identity documents?
And no less concerning is the potential loss of my funds in case the exchange becomes insolvent: I’ve already told you how in the past I lost control of cryptocurrencies that today would be worth about a thousand dollars due to the bankruptcy of the platform I had entrusted them to.
Moreover, while it’s true that an exchange can make it very simple to store and swap cryptocurrencies from different chains, nowadays there are many apps — even fully decentralized — and wallets that can do the same thing. Sure, it takes learning a bit more, being careful not to lose your passwords, and if you make a mistake, there may be little that can be done, but in return you always keep control of your assets, without needing to trust someone else.
On top of that, the DeFi world is full of opportunities to explore, whereas traditional exchanges are almost entirely focused on trading.
For someone like me, who’s not interested in trading, an exchange becomes little more than a wallet that, at best, gives me a small return on the crypto I leave sitting there.
That’s why just a few days ago I closed my last account on a centralized exchange.
Turning the Page
I moved the last funds I had to one of my own wallets and then closed and deleted the account, thus bringing this chapter of my crypto journey to an end.
Now all my assets are stored in my own wallets, just like my HIVE, which is stored here in my @arc7icwolf account, where only I have access and which I can use for much more than earning simple interest: I can curate other users' content, interact by posting comments and posts, claim new accounts... and even earn some interest along the way!
My plan now is to use the funds I recovered — which had been sitting there doing nothing for years — to try doing something more: as I mentioned above, the DeFi world is full of opportunities, some of which are even just plain fun.
After all, the assets I have outside Hive are small amounts, and I think it makes more sense to use them for experimentation and to have a bit of fun, rather than just letting them sit there.
After all, I’ve been watching them for years, and it hasn’t done any good.
Maybe it’s time to take action and see what happens :)

Ho Chiuso il Mio Ultimo Account su un Exchange Centralizzato: Ho Preso il Pieno Controllo dei Miei Assets
La mia esperienza con gli exchanges e le piattaforme centralizzate non è mai stata un granchè.
E' vero, rendono molto facile acquistare e scambiare una criptovaluta per un'altra e consentono con un solo account di gestire tanti assets, avendoli tutti comodamente a portata di mano... ma ci sono anche tanti svantaggi.
Primo tra tutti il dover fornire i propri documenti d'identità su tutte quelle piattaforme che hanno procedure di KYC - Know Your Customer - obbligatorie, cosa che non mi ha mai fatto sentire a mio agio, perchè se la piattaforma viene hackerata o chiude, in mano a chi possono finire i miei documenti di identità?
E non meno preoccupante può diventare la fine dei miei fondi in caso di insolvenza dell'exchange: vi ho già raccontato di come in passato io abbia in questo modo perso il controllo di criptovalute che oggi varrebbero circa un migliaio di dollari a causa del fallimento della piattaforma a cui li avevo affidati.
Inoltre, è vero che un exchange può rendere molto semplice conservare e scambiare tra loro criptovalute appartenenti a chains diverse, ma in realtà oggi esistono tante applicazioni, anche completamente decentralizzate, e wallet che rendono possibile la stessa cosa: sì, serve imparare qualche nozione in più, stare attenti a non perdere le proprie passwords ed in caso di errore ci sarà ben poco da fare, ma in cambio potremo mantenere sempre il controllo dei nostri assets, senza doverci fidare di qualcun altro.
Inoltre il mondo della DeFi è ricco di possibilità da poter sfruttare, mentre gli exchanges tradizionali sono quasi e solo completamente incentrati sul trading.
Per chi, come me, non è interessato al trading un exchenge diventa poco più di un wallet che, nella migliore delle ipotesi, mi riconosce un interesse a fronte delle criptovalute che tengo depositate lì.
Ecco perchè pochi giorni fa ho chiuso il mio ultimo account su un exchange centralizzato.
Svoltare pagina
Ho spostato gli ultimi fondi che avevo su un mio wallet e poi ho chiuso e cancellato l'account, così ponendo fine a questa parte della mia esperienza nel mondo crypto.
Adesso tutti i miei assets sono conservati su miei wallet, esattamente come i miei HIVE che sono conservati qui, sul mio account @arc7icwolf, dove solo io posso disporne e che posso impiegare per ben più che ricevere un semplice interesse: posso curarci i contenuti degli altri utenti, interagire pubblicando commenti e post, riscattarci nuovi account... e nel mentre anche guadagnarci un interesse!
La mia idea adesso è di usare questi fondi che ho recuperato, e che per anni sono stati lì a non fare niente, per provare a farci qualcosa di più: come scrivevo poco sopra, il mondo della DeFi è ricco di possibilità, alcune delle quali anche semplicemente divertenti.
In fondo i miei assets fuori da Hive sono costituiti da piccoli importi e credo che per me abbia più senso usarli per fare esperimenti e divertirmi un po', invece che stare lì a guardarli.
D'altra parte sono anni che li osservo e non è servito a niente.
Forse è giunto il momento di agire e vedere che succede :)
