lol!!, we started Splinterlands at the same time !!!
For me, Splinterlands is the first, and I still think the best, practical, logical use for blockchain technology. It's specific to the use case of TCG of course, but it makes total sense to replace physical cards with NFT's, play out the game on the blockchain and self-organise via DAO/governance token mechanism's.
I've always felt that blockchain tech is like electricity when it was first discovered and experimented with. Interesting, full of potential (a pun !!!) but nobody had figured out what to do with it yet other than make sparks or give amusing shocks.
Splinterlands is a great experiment that is using the tech to replace and improve something that was done before but is now done better. Granted, it's a game and it's not feeding the starving or curing cancer, but never the less, it is a valid part of the process and fertile ground for learning and experimenting.
I'll freely admit, the play-to-earn aspect attracted me, but since then I've gained more in crypto involvement and learning than I have earned in currency, in hindsight , that was my real earning, and the dividends are compounding still.
P.S. The Charlock Minotaur was the first card I bought, what was yours ?
