All of us have room for improvement; that's just a fact. We know that novices have plenty of room for improvement. Average performers have plenty of room for improvement also, anthough they are closer to excellence than novices. Even elite performers have room for improvement, although for them we're talking about tiny improvements which make the difference between being All-Star-caliber or even champions and being a Hall of Famer.
In nearly everything we do, we have room for improvement. Many of these things can be measured, such as time to completion or quantities completed. Many other things are not quantifiable but just as important: respecting our elders, being kind to strangers, watching our language, dressing better for the occasion, etc.
Many people follow the plan of being 1% better each day (or week, or month, or whatever other period is relevant). This is doable, and it encourages continued and sustained progress. Even if we fall short of that goal occasionally, between the beginning of following this plan and the present improvement can be seen. In this way, improvement is like the financial markets over the long term: the overall trend point up.
