No one knows other people's problems and it is easy to judge, give opinions and even give advice when it comes to other lives, but no one turns to check their own.
My friends tell me to help him, that only I can get him out of the trouble he is in, that if I don't intervene, he will spend twenty years in prison for a crime he did not commit.
Daniel showed up and his presence continues to torment me...
In order for you to understand what this is about, I will summarize my life. At the age of fifteen I met Daniel, a boy who had just arrived in the city and lived right across the street from my house. His parents managed to get a place for him to continue his studies in the same high school where I was studying. From then on, we became good friends.
All his classmates made fun of him for his small-town appearance, while I defended him and demanded respect behind his back.
A year later, we were inseparable, to the point that an attraction was born between the two of us. I thought it was overconfidence, but it turned out to be cute teenage love. One day Daniel showed up at my house with a red rose in his hand, after handing it to me, he kissed me on the cheek, took my hand and asked me if I wanted to be his girlfriend.
Wow, I felt hundreds of butterflies fluttering in my stomach and I quickly answered yes.
Two wonderful years went by, until we went our separate ways to start college. We swore eternal love to each other, we planned trips for the meetings and they were fulfilled the first year, until Daniel left me on board one weekend, he did not answer my calls or messages and without any explanation, he disappeared from my life.
I cried like a little girl when she loses her favorite doll. I suffered, I went into depression, I even lost a few kilos. Not a single day went by without asking myself why, what happened, I deserve an explanation!
I continued my studies in legal sciences and obtained my degree as a lawyer of the republic. Today I run my own law firm and handle the most complicated cases in town, the ones that no one wants to take on.
Not to sound conceited, but I am really good at what I do. I love my profession and the results speak for themselves. Of course, I am not a devil's advocate, I hope you understand me. My values and principles are deeply rooted in me.
After receiving a call from an unknown number something common for me because of my work, I answer as usual and the voice of a gentleman greets politely.
"Hello Lis it's Daniel, Daniel Fuenmayor, how have you been?" I know you must be surprised by my call, but I'm in town and I want to invite you for a coffee, the kind you like at the coffee shop around the corner from your office. I owe you an explanation accompanied by a thousand apologies."
Luckily I wasn't driving, otherwise I would have caused an accident. I responded as nonchalantly as I could, saying that my schedule was full. Then I closed the call. From then on, Daniel was so insistent and persuasive that I accepted the invitation ten days later.
Even though I lied to myself that I didn't care, I made it a point to wear a stunning red dress and my hair down, just the way he liked it.
My heart skipped a beat, he is certainly more handsome than before. That tailored suit in conjunction with his 6'4" height and athletic body made me have sinful thoughts.
After swallowing thickly, I shook his hand to greet him with the coldest reaction a person can have, with whom he broke his heart years ago.
Immediately upon taking a seat, I told him I didn't have much time and to please be brief. The first thing she did was to order two lattes with vanilla and a touch of cinnamon just the way I like it, then she thanked me for my presence. He immediately apologized to me for the immature action of disappearing ten years ago and throwing the relationship overboard, college life made him lose his bearings and when he regained them he was too embarrassed to return, while I listened in silence and enjoyed the coffee.
After apologizing again and again, I sensed there was more to it, so I asked him. He lowered his face in shame and said he needed my services as a lawyer. He was being accused of fraud thanks to his partner, who used the name of the company to commit misdeeds, Daniel being innocent of everything. The only crime was not realizing the partner's wrongdoings.
I said goodbye without affirming that I would accept the case. The past does not let me think with a cool head.
My friends, who also knew Daniel and knew our history, have insisted that I help him. They try to manipulate me by saying that I am a good person and that if I have helped so many people, why deny him the possibility.
Daniel calls me every day insistently, first to know if I will defend him in court and secondly, he wants to know if I managed to forgive him.
Today I am writing these lines to tell you that we were able to prove Daniel's innocence and at the same time he recovered his company.
History repeats itself, spending so much time together has rekindled the attraction, but I am afraid that it will disappear again.
He repeats to me daily that I am the love of his life and thanks the fraudulent business of the ex-partner for bringing us together again.
This is my entry for this week's Creative Writing Challenge.
