Hello, friends of Hive! Today I want to share with you a commission I did some time ago:
The person who commissioned me to do this portrait was my dad, and the model for this drawing is my grandmother.
My grandmother was about to turn 76 years old, so my dad wanted to give her a gift from a distance (we live in different cities, and confinement limits us to take a plane or a ferry to visit her), and, since I had not done any portrait of a family member so far, he thought it was the perfect occasion.
Detail.
The reference image my dad gave me was from a photograph from the 70's (my grandmother was 30 years old, approximately), which made me nostalgic, it also made me notice those facial features that my dad and later (but to a lesser extent) I inherited, which I found very interesting.
Detail.
I won't lie, I felt a lot of pressure. This would not be a portrait of a stranger I find in a magazine, book or pinterest, this is my grandmother, if I failed to capture her facial features in the drawing, it would not look like her and it would be strange; my uncles, my cousins and all my family would ask who this woman is... and I didn't want that, I wanted it to be easy to recognize instantly.
Detail.
The time it took me to do this portrait was about 10 to 12 hours (approximately), in a span of 5 days to a week. The main material for this portrait was graphite pencil of different grades, including H, 2B, 3B and 6B.

On my grandmother's birthday I sent her the image of the finished drawing, which she responded with love, she loved it! Which made my day. I hope to visit her very soon and give her her gift in person along with a big hug, she deserves that and much more.
What do you guys think? If you have any tips or recommendations for me you can leave them in the comments, I will be happy to read them all.
