Freewrite prompt: Dead Battery
He'd been dreading having to go to work all day. The weather was dreary, yet peaceful. It was Sunday. Though he'd voiced his opinion about working Sundays. It seemed his employer had developed selective amnesia. After lounging around the house, and going outside a few times to smoke his black n mild. He was now making breakfast for mom and younger brother.
He had no reason to feel tired. He'd slept in today. Yet Sundays were a crumby day to work. He regretted the decision he made to cover a Sunday, over a year ago. Ever since then he's worked six days straight. His preferred routine of getting up around ten to have breakfast with his mom. Attending church, and going home to spend time with his friends. Was now cut short because of work.
It wasn't the work itself. After fifteen years working for the company. The work itself was a pretty routine affair. Yet he longed to spend time with friends and family. His inner man was in turmoil. His job was comfortable, and gave him enough to cover bills. Yet after fifteen years of service. He had nothing to show for it. The increased government mandates had nullified any raises he had received.
As he arrived at work. He did his best to calm his inner turmoil. The dreary yet peaceful weather was his only comfort. There's was nothing exceedingly stressful about work. In fact overall it was a tempered day. Yet the turmoil continued. He decided to write a blog. His current state of mind fluctuating, and the blog was full of metaphors. Reflecting the inner turmoil. His inner battery was drained. If fact it seemed like he now had a dead battery.
About three hours into his shift. The blog that he'd been writing between deliveries was almost finished. Arriving from a delivery. He saw the shift runner pop her head out the entrance of the store and yell something. His mind obviously distant, he didn't hear what she said. He looked at her blankly, and she repeated what she had said. "Bring in your stuff. I'm sending you home." Instantly his spirits lifted. The gloom dissipated. A smile emerged on his face, for the first time that day. There was a renewed pep in his step.
After handing in his receipts and cashing out. He cheerfully said his goodbyes and walked into his car. Sitting there staring at the blog he had been writing. He wondered to himself. How quickly he'd been freed from his burdens. How cheerful everything seemed now. Though he considered finishing his blog. He found that he couldn't. It no longer represented his day. So he deleted it. His dead battery, had somehow been restored.
As he drove home, he couldn't help but feel embarrassed. He reflected on his day, while basking in his renewed perspective. Later on he would write a new blog. Full of words that not only uplifted but inspired it's readers. Not a trace of his previous demeanor. It was now a bad memory, from a time long long ago.
