Una de las librerías más famosas en el mundo
As a traveler and reader, it makes all the sense in the world that among my favorite places to visit when visiting a new city are bookstores, libraries, or other book-related spaces. During my visit to Buenos Aires I visited second-hand book markets, public libraries and also some bookstores that I found in the streets, but there was one that I had on my list before I bought my plane ticket to the Argentine capital.
Como viajero y lector que soy, tiene todo el sentido del mundo que entre mis lugares favoritos para visitar cuando recorro una ciudad nueva se encuentren las librerías, bibliotecas, o demás espacios relacionados con libros. En mi visita a Buenos Aires visité mercados de libros de segunda mano, bibliotecas públicas y también algunas librerías que fui encontrando en las calles, pero había una que ya tenía en lista desde antes de comprar el pasaje de ida hacia la capital argentina.
Surely you have already seen similar images on Instagram, TikTok, or some other social network because most people who visit Buenos Aires don't hesitate to go to El Ateneo Splendid, that majestic bookstore that is located inside an old theater. As a clarification I want to mention that El Ateneo is the name of the brand, that is to say of that chain of bookstores that exist in Buenos Aires, so if you search in Maps or in Internet the bookstore El Ateneo, it will show you all the locations of each one of these stores. It can also happen that walking through Micro Centro you find an El Ateneo and when you enter you realize that the interior is not the one I show you in this post, so if you want to go specifically to this one you have to add the word Splendid, which is the name of the site. This name comes from the fact that the name of the old theater was Grand Splendid. With more than a hundred years of history, the present building was initially occupied as a theater and great personalities paraded there, including the mythical Carlos Gardel. This was so until the beginning of the eighties when it was converted into a cinema until the end of the century, what it must have been like to go to see a movie in this building! And then, in December 2000, the current bookstore was inaugurated, belonging to the people of El Ateneno, which has its largest location in this place: about 4,000 square meters where +120,000 titles are exhibited and where vinyl records are also sold and there's a coffee shop located at the back, in what was formerly the stage, behind the curtain.
Seguramente ya hayan visto imágenes parecidas en Instagram, TikTok, o alguna otra red social porque la mayoría de las personas que visitan Buenos Aires no dudan en acudir a El Ateneo Splendid, esa majestuosa librería que está ubicada al interior de un antiguo teatro. Como aclaratoria les quiero mencionar que El Ateneo es el nombre de la marca, es decir de esa cadena de librerías que hay en Buenos Aires, por lo que si buscan en Maps o en Internet la librería El Ateneo, les va a arrojar todas las ubicaciones de cada una de estas tiendas. También puede ocurrir que caminando por Micro Centro se encuentren con un El Ateneo y al entrar se den cuenta de que el interior no es el que les muestro en este post, así que si quieren ir específicamente a esta tienen que agregar la palabra Splendid, el cual es el nombre de la sede. Este nombre se debe a que el nombre del antiguo teatro era Grand Splendid. Con más de cien años de historia, el edificio actual fue ocupado inicialmente como teatro y por allí desfilaron grandes personalidades, incluido el mítico Carlos Gardel. Esto fue así hasta principio de los años ochenta cuando fue reconvertido en cine hasta el final del siglo, ¡lo que debió ser ir a ver una película en este edificio! Y luego, en diciembre del año 2000 fue inaugurada la librería actual, perteneciente a la gente de El Ateneno que posee en este local su ubicación más grande: unos 4.000 metros cuadrados en donde se exhiben +120.000 titulos y en donde también se venden discos de vinilo y hay una cafetería ubicada al fondo, en lo que anteriormente fue el escenario, detrás del telón.
Due to the exterior of the building, but above all to its interior, the stupendous remodeling they did to the building and that antique aesthetics, with balconies, boxes, the great fresco painted on the dome and that appearance of an old theater, this bookstore has been included many times among the most beautiful bookstores in the world, (National Geographic once placed it first in this ranking) and in one of the most visited corners of the Argentine capital.
Debido al exterior del edificio, pero sobre todo a su interior, la estupenda remodelación que le hicieron al inmueble y esa estética antigua, con balcones, palcos, el gran fresco pintado sobre la cúpula y esa apariencia de teatro antiguo, esta librería ha sido incluida muchas veces entre las librerías más hermosas del mundo, (la National Geographic, alguna vez la colocó el primer puesto de este ranking) y en uno de los rincones más visitados de la capital argentina.
It's impressive and a bit overwhelming to find yourself inside this place that is not only a bookstore and coffee shop but also an art gallery because there are some works exhibited inside its walls. However, it must also be said, I was surprised by the high prices of the books. It's not something only of this bookstore, in all Buenos Aires it seemed to me that books were very high priced, at least compared to books in Chile or in the USA. For example, taking as a reference the prices of books in Argentine pesos and in Chilean pesos and making their equivalence in dollars, I found that books in Argentina can even cost twice (or more) what they are worth in Chile. At first I thought it had to do with import costs, but I also found that books edited and printed in Argentina had very high prices. For example, I saw a copy of Stephen King's The Shining, paperback format, at 28,000 Argentine pesos, while in Chile it would have cost the equivalent of approximately 12,000 pesos. So, yes, it's an iconic corner of Buenos Aires, a beautiful place to go, visit, walk around, have a coffee, eat some pastries, but it's not ideal for buying books and shouldn't that be the most important thing in a bookstore? what do you think? is it the most beautiful bookstore in the world? which bookstore have you visited that you found beautiful? Es impresionante y un poco abrumador encontrarse al interior de este lugar que no sólo es librería y cafetería sino también galería de arte porque hay algunos trabajos exhibidos dentro de sus muros. Sin embargo, también hay que decirlo, me sorprendió lo elevado de los precios de los libros. No es algo sólo de esta librería, en todo Buenos Aires me pareció que los libros tenían un precio muy alto, al menos comparado con los libros en Chile o en EEUU. Por ejemplo, tomando como referencia los precios de los libros en pesos argentinos y en pesos chilenos y haciendo su equivalencia en dólares, encontré que los libros en Argentina pueden llegar a costar incluso el doble (o más) de lo que valen en Chile. Al principio pensé que tenía que ver con costos de importación, pero también encontré que libros editados e impresos en Argentina tenían precios muy elevados. Por ejemplo, vi un ejemplar del El resplandor de Stephen King, formato de bolsillo, en 28.000 pesos argentinos, mientras que en Chile habría costado lo equivalente a 12.000 pesos aproximadamente. Entonces, sí, es un rincón icónico de Buenos Aires, un hermoso lugar para ir, conocer, recorrer, tomarse un café, comer algunas facturas, pero no es ideal para comprar libros y ¿no debería ser eso lo más importante en una librería? ¿ustedes qué opinan? ¿es la librería más hermosa del mundo? ¿cuál librería han conocido que les haya parecido bella?
