Este es el único templo Baha'i de América del Sur
This may confuse some people, but the truth is that although I am not a religious guy, I do consider myself a spiritual person. We would have to explain many things and tell anecdotes, moments, ideas, and this is not the space or the time to talk about it, but we can summarize the idea in this: I do not profess any religion, I do not go to any church and I do not believe in a specific god with name and surname; but I do recognize that there's something that transcends our humanity, something that is above us.
Quizás esto pueda confundir a algunos, pero la verdad es que aunque no soy un tipo religioso sí me considero una persona espiritual. Habría que explicar muchas cosas y contar anécdotas, momentos, ideas, y no es este el espacio ni el momento para conversar al respecto, pero podemos resumir la idea en esto: no profeso ninguna religión, no acudo a ninguna iglesia y no creo en un dios específico con nombre y apellido; pero sí reconozco que hay algo que trasciende nuestra humanidad, algo que está por encima de nosotros.
Some have called me a pantheist, others an agnostic, many more have called me an apostate, an atheist or a heretic. However, my position is not necessarily to deny the existence of a god, but to acknowledge that whatever there is beyond us is ungraspable to our comprehension. It would be something like “if god exists he must be so big that we shouldn't be able to comprehend his immensity” and that is why religions, churches, dogmas, I find them flat, insufficient or false (not to mention their innumerable human flaws, vices, abuses and history). So, coming from me it may seem a bit strange that I like to visit temples. Churches, mosques, synagogues and chapels of different religions are usually quiet spaces filled with artistic, architectural, historical details that are worth checking out. To tell the history of painting or medieval architecture without mentioning the cathedrals or the Gothic and Baroque styles is not possible, so visiting a church of these may have to do with reasons unrelated to the spiritual. However, in this opportunity what I want to share with you is a place that I didn't know existed - although I could have sensed it - and that perhaps should be more frequent. The Baha'i Temple of South America is located in the commune of Peñalolén in Santiago de Chile and is the only temple of this type in the continent (there is another one in Panama, but that country is part of Central America and there is another house of prayer in Colombia, but it's not a Continental Temple like this one) that calls the attention for its architecture, but what is the Baha'i religion? I will try to explain a little of what I understood in my visit.
Algunos me han llamado panteísta, otros agnóstico, muchos más me han llamado apóstata, ateo o hereje. Sin embargo, mi postura no es negar necesariamente la existencia de un dios, sino reconocer que sea lo que sea que hay más allá de nosotros es inasible para nuestra comprensión. Sería algo así como "si dios existe tiene que ser tan grande que no deberíamos poder comprender su inmensidad" y por eso las religiones, las iglesias, los dogmas, me resultan planos, insuficientes o falsos (sin mencionar sus innumerables defectos humanos, vicios, abusos e historia). Entonces, viniendo de mí puede parecer algo extraño que me guste visitar templos. Las iglesias, mezquitas, sinagogas y capillas de diferentes religiones son espacios normalmente tranquilos y repletos de detalles artísticos, arquitectónicos, históricos, que vale la pena revisar. Contar la historia de la pintura o la arquitectura medieval sin mencionar las catedrales o los etilos gótico y barroco no es posible, así que visitar una iglesia de estas puede tener que ver con motivos ajenos a lo espiritual. Sin embargo, en esta oportunidad lo que quiero compartirles es un lugar que yo no sabía que existía - aunque podía haberlo intuido - y que tal vez debería ser más frecuente. El Templo Baha'i de Suramérica está ubicado en la comuna de Peñalolén en Santiago de Chile y es el único templo de este tipo en el continente (hay otro en Panamá, pero ese país es parte de Centro América y hay otra casa de oración en Colombia, pero no es un Templo Continental como este) que llama la atención por su arquitectura, pero ¿qué es eso de la religión Baha'i? Intentaré explicar un poco de lo que entendí en mi visita.
Strictly speaking, the Baha'i religion would be a monotheism, similar to Catholicism, Judaism or Islam, but one thing that caught my attention during my visit to this temple is that the dome you see in the photographs houses a prayer space that can receive any person of any creed. That is, if you are Muslim, Mormon, Buddhist, Shintoist, or whatever religion you are, you can enter this place and pray in silence and with respect to whatever idea of god you have; and that represents a significant difference with respect to all the monotheisms I had known so far.
En estricto rigor, la religión Baha'i sería un monoteísmo, parecido al catolicismo, judaísmo o al islam, pero una cosa que me llamó la atención en mi visita a este templo es que la cúpula que ven en las fotografías alberga un espacio de oración que puede recibir a cualquier persona de cualquier credo. Es decir, si usted es musulmán, mormón, budista, sintoísta, o de la religión que sea, usted puede ingresar a este lugar y orar en silencio y con respeto a cualquier idea de dios que tenga; y eso representa una diferencia significativa con respecto a todos los monoteísmos que había conocido hasta ahora.
I found this opening interesting and novel, when was the last time you saw a Hindu enter a mosque? The fact that there's a place of common prayer for all people seems to me to be a universal principle that should be rescued. In the place there's also a library that can be visited to review texts about the history of this religion, about its other temples in the world, its principles and a lot of information, but it's not a requirement to be part of this religion to enter the place or make use of its facilities. It's true that this brings some unfavorable consequences (people see it more as a tourist site to take pictures and post reels) than as a place of retreat, silence and prayer, but that's not the fault of the place, but of its visitors. I would have liked to share with you pictures of the central hall under the dome, but in the tour that the people of the place gave us, they asked us not to take pictures of the interior out of respect for the sacredness of the place, so if you see on the internet pictures of the inside, they are either from the official channel of the place or are from people who have violated this express prohibition on the part of the members of this congregation. In the whole world there are only 8 continental temples like this one and a little more than a dozen other smaller temples, so if you have the opportunity to visit one, no matter what your idea of god is, I recommend you to do it. They are large, quiet, secluded spaces where you can pray, meditate, think, philosophize, and are usually surrounded by nature like this one, the one in Santiago, which, being at the base of a mountain in the Andes, allows you to observe the city from above, did you know about this kind of temples? would you like to visit them? Esta apertura me pareció interesante y novedosa, ¿cuándo fue la última vez que vieron a un hinduista entrar a una mezquita? Que exista un lugar de oración común para todas las personas me parece un principio universal rescatable. En el lugar también hay una biblioteca que puede visitarse para revisar textos sobre la historia de esa religión, sobre sus otros templos en el mundo, sus principios y un montón de información, pero no es requisito formar parte de esta religión para ingresar al lugar o hacer uso de sus instalaciones. Es cierto que esto trae algunas consecuencias poco favorables (la gente lo ve más como un sitio de turismo para sacarse fotos y postear reels) que como un lugar de retraimiento, silencio y oración, pero eso no es culpa del lugar, sino de sus visitantes.
Me habría gustado poder compartirles fotografías del salón central bajo la cúpula, pero en el recorrido que nos dieron las personas del lugar nos pidieron que no tomásemos fotos de su interior por respeto a la sacralidad el lugar, así que si ven en internet fotos de la parte de adentro, o bien son del canal oficial del lugar o son de personas que han violado esta prohibición expresa de parte de los miembros de esta congregación. En todo el mundo hay apenas 8 templos continentales como este y poco más de una docena de otros templos menores, así que si tienes la oportunidad de visitar alguno, no importa cuál sea tu idea de dios, te recomiendo que lo hagas. Son espacios amplios, silenciosos, de retraimiento en los que puedes orar, rezar, meditar, pensar, filosofar, y normalmente están rodeados de naturaleza como este, el de Santiago, que por estar a la base de una montaña en la cordillera de los andes permite observar la ciudad desde lo alto, ¿sabían ustedes de este tipo de templos? ¿les gustaría visitarlos?
