I can't get enough of high views. Whether I am in the middle of a metropolis or in the middle of a rural area, I like to contemplate the landscape from above, climb a hill, a flight of stairs, reach a rooftop on the tenth, fifteenth or twentieth floor, all to be able to take in as much land, sky, nature or urbanism as possible with my gaze. I don't know if I have always been like this, but for some years now I have acquired the habit of - whenever possible - looking for the height to observe the horizon in any city I visit.
No me canso de las vistas altas. Ya sea que me encuentre en medio de una metrópolis o en mitad de una zona rural, me gusta contemplar el paisaje desde lo alto, subir un cerro, unas escaleras, llegar a una azotea en el piso diez, quince o veinte, todo para poder abarcar con mi mirada la mayor extensión de tierra, de cielo, de naturaleza o de urbanismo que se pueda. No sé si siempre he sido así, pero desde algunos años para acá he adquirido la costumbre de - siempre que se pueda - buscar la altura para observar el horizonte en cualquier ciudad que visito.
When I landed in Buenos Aires, I took a bus to downtown where the hostel where I was going to stay was located and somewhere along the way we passed by a tall tower with a clock on top that caught my attention. I hadn't made a very detailed itinerary for the days I would be in the Argentine capital; yes, I had written down some names of places or had some pictures, but I was not very clear about all the places I wanted to visit. That's why I was surprised when a couple of days later, trying to see where to go to see a bit of the city, I came across a place called Torre Monumental on the map on my phone. In some blog or travel journal or something I had read about a Torre de los Ingleses and I only had to read a little to realize that not only was it the same place, but it was also the tower I had seen on my first tour of Buenos Aires. I verified that it was possible to visit and climb it to admire the city with a 360° view and I immediately headed for the place. Coming from downtown towards Retiro, you have to go through San Martin Square to get to the Tower and the view is a postcard: the green of the park, the buildings of the railway terminals and the Tower standing in the middle of the Argentinian Air Force Square is a very beautiful image, especially because in the whole block surrounding the tower there is no other building and this makes it stand out and look imposing. Cuando aterricé en Buenos Aires, tomé un colectivo hacia el centro en donde estaba el hostal en donde me iba a hospedar y en algún punto del recorrido pasamos cerca de una torre alta con un reloj en la parte superior que llamó mi atención. No había hecho un itinerario muy minucioso para los días que estaría en la capital argentina; sí, había apuntado algunos nombres de lugares o tenía algunas fotografías, pero no tenía muy en claro todos los lugares que quería conocer. Por eso me sorprendí cuando un par de días después tratando de ver a dónde dirigirme para recorrer un poco de la ciudad me topé en el mapa del teléfono con un lugar llamado Torre Monumental. En algún blog o diario de viajes o algo así había leído también de una Torre de los Ingleses y me bastó leer un poco para darme cuenta de que no sólo se trataba del mismo lugar, sino que además era la torre que había visto en mi primer paseo por Buenos Aires. Verifiqué que se podía visitar y subir para admirar la ciudad con una vista de 360° e inmediatamente me dirigí hacia el lugar. Viniendo desde el centro hacia Retiro, hay que pasar por la Plaza San Martín para llegar a la Torre y la vista es una postal: el verde del parque, los edificios de los terminales ferroviarios y la Torre erguida en medio de la Plaza Fuerza Aérea Argentina es una imagen muy hermosa, sobre todo porque en toda la manzana que rodea a la torre no hay ningún otro edificio y esto hace que destaque y que se vea imponente. The building was inaugurated on May 24th, 1916, almost exactly 109 years ago and was built by British residents in the city to commemorate the centenary of the May Revolution. Initially it was called Torre de los Ingleses and the square was called Plaza Británica, but after the Malvinas War - for obvious reasons - both names were changed to more local and less anglophile ones.
El edificio fue inaugurado el 24 de mayo de 1916, hace casi exactamente 109 años y fue construida por residentes británicos en la ciudad para conmemorar el centenario de la Revolución de Mayo. Inicialmente se llamaba Torre de los Ingleses y la plaza se llamaba Plaza Británica, pero después de la Guerra de las Malvinas - por obvias razones - ambos nombres fueron cambiados por unos más locales y menos anglófilos.
The two squares are public and the first floor of the tower can be visited freely. There are signs there with information about the place, its history, photographs, etc, but in order to go up you have to pay. If I remember correctly, the entrance fee for residents now costs about 1.30 USD and for visitors it costs about 6.50 USD. When I visited the city I also knew that the tours were free on Wednesdays - I don't know if it's still the same - but just those next two Wednesdays would be holidays and the place would be closed, so I couldn't take advantage of that free admission. However, the goddess of fortune was on my side because on the day of my visit there was a problem with the machine that charged and issued the tickets and instead of blocking my way - which would have happened in other cities and countries I know - the official at the reception allowed me to go up without paying. An elevator at the back of the reception was in charge of taking me up from the first floor to the roof. There are some offices and outbuildings on the floors in between, but they are for authorized personnel only, visitors can only go up to the sixth floor where the rooftop is. As soon as I got to the top and the elevator doors opened, I took a few steps and was met with an incredible view of the Plaza San Martin. A balcony completely surrounds the top floor of the tower, allowing a 360° view of buildings and emblematic areas of the city. What I liked the most was the view towards the terminal and on the other side to appreciate the iconic Kavanagh building, that imposing construction that can be seen on the left side of the presentation image of this post.

Las dos plazas son públicas y la planta baja de la torre se puede recorrer libremente. Allí hay carteles con información sobre el lugar, su historia, fotografías, etc, pero para poder subir hay que pagar. Si recuerdo bien, la entrada para los residentes cuesta ahora unos 1,30 USD y para los visitantes cuesta alrededor de 6,50 USD. Cuando visité la ciudad también supe que las visitas eran gratuitas los días miércoles - no sé si siga siendo igual - pero justo esos dos miércoles siguientes serían feriados y el lugar estaría cerrado, así que no podía aprovechar esa gratuidad. Sin embargo, la diosa de la fortuna estuvo de mi lado porque el día de mi visita había un problema con la máquina que cobraba y emitía los boletos y en vez de impedirme el paso - lo que hubiera ocurrido en otras ciudades y países que conozco - el funcionario de la recepción me permitió subir sin pagar. Un elevador al fondo de la recepción era el encargado de subirme desde planta baja hasta la azotea. Hay algunas oficinas y dependencias en los pisos entremedio, pero son sólo para personal autorizado, los visitantes sólo podemos subir al sexto piso en donde está la azotea. En cuanto llegué arriba y las puertas del elevador se abrieron, di algunos pasos y me encontré con una vista increíble de la Plaza San Martín. Un balcón rodea completamente ese último piso de la torre, permitiendo una vista de 360° de edificios y zonas emblemáticas de la ciudad. Lo que más me gustó fue la vista hacia el terminal y del otro lado poder apreciar el icónico edificio Kavanagh, esa imponente construcción que puede verse hacia el lado izquierdo de la imagen de presentación de este post.
At that altitude the wind was strong and that's why I noticed a cricket that landed on the edge of the lookout just when I wanted to focus on a building. It stayed there for several minutes and I was able to take several pictures and record a couple of videos. There's no way to describe the feeling of being up there. Even if I leave more photos here or show you an audiovisual tour, it's one thing to see it from the plane of a screen and another to be there and extend your gaze to the horizon in all directions, towards Retiro, Recoleta, Puerto Madero, see the San Martin Square, the Avenida del Libertador and watch the dome of the tower from so close. It's really like to stay there for a long time going around and around and seeing the city from all sides. Of course you can't do that because you have to keep up with the flow of people going up and down from the viewpoint, but I recommend this experience for all those who will soon be going to the Argentine capital, especially if, like me, you enjoy the high views. On that trip I went up to several rooftops in different areas of the city and I think I should do a post with the best photos of Buenos Aires from above. I don't know, I'm still thinking about it, but I would like to know if this fondness for rooftops, terraces and high views is something rare or if on the contrary it is a fairly common trait among travelers, does it happen to you? A esa altura el viento era fuerte y por eso llamó mi atención un grillo que se posó sobre el borde del mirador justo cuando quería enfocar un edificio. Se quedó varios minutos allí y pude tomarle varias fotos y grabar un par de videos. No hay forma de describir la sensación que da estar allí arriba. Por más que deje más fotos acá o que les muestre un recorrido audiovisual, una cosa es ver eso desde lo plano de una pantalla y otra es estar allí y extender la mirada hacia el horizonte en todas direcciones, hacia Retiro, Recoleta, hacia Puerto Madero, ver la Plaza San Martín, la Avenida del Libertador y observar la cúpula de la torre desde tan cerca. En verdad es como para quedarse mucho rato allí dando vueltas y vueltas y viendo la ciudad por todas partes. Lógicamente que eso no se puede hacer porque debe mantenerse el flujo de personas que suben y bajan del mirador, pero recomiendo esta experiencia para todos quienes vayan pronto a la capital argentina, especialmente si, como yo, disfrutan de las vistas altas. En ese viaje subí a varias azoteas en diferentes zonas de la ciudad y creo que debería realizar un post con las mejores fotos de Buenos Aires desde lo alto. No lo sé, aún me lo estoy pensando, pero me gustaría saber si esta afición por las azoteas, terrazas y las vistas altas es algo raro o si por el contrario es un rasgo bastante común entre los viajeros, ¿les pasa a ustedes?
