We often travel to a place with a list of things we want to do or some places we want to see in that city or country. Being prepared and having an itinerary is good, especially if you have a special reason to visit those places. But even if this is your travel style, I recommend leaving room in your schedule for improvisation because often the most wonderful places we discover come to us unexpectedly.
Muchas veces viajamos a un lugar con una lista de cosas que queremos hacer o algunos lugares que queremos conocer de esa ciudad o ese país. Estar preparados y tener un itinerario está bien, sobre todo si tienes una razón especial para ir a estos lugares. Pero aún cuando este sea tu estilo de viajar, te recomiendo que dejes espacio en tu agenda para la improvisación porque muchas veces los lugares más maravillosos que conocemos llegan a nosotros de manera imprevista.
The first time I went to southern Chile I spent a few days in Pucon and then a few days in Panguipulli. I consulted both cities and their surroundings and noted that in Pucon I wanted to go to La Poza, tour the city and maybe go rafting (which I did), but I also did a tour that wasn't scheduled and visited the Ojos del Caburgua and some hot springs. I knew even less about Panguipulli, but I had planned to go to the Huilo-Huilo Biological Reserve (although I had not taken tickets before arriving). Beyond going to that reserve and hiking overlooking Lake Panguipulli, I hadn't thought of going anywhere else, but when I stopped by a municipal tourism office where they gave me a map and some recommendations, a plan jumped out at me. I learned that about an hour's drive from Panguipulli would take me to Puerto Fuy, a small town located on the edge of Lake Pirihueico and from where you can take a catamaran to navigate the lake to an even smaller town called Puerto Pirihueico. Panguipulli is more than 800 km from Santiago, it was the first time I was so far south and a part of me wanted to know how much further south I could go on that trip. In total, from Panguipulli to Puerto Pirihueico is about 90 km, combining road and navigation, so one humid morning in December I embarked to this remote town in Chile that is just 10 minutes by road from the Huahum pass, on the border with Argentina. I had no idea what I was going to find there, but I wanted to go anyway.
La primera vez que fui al Sur de Chile estuve unos días en Pucón y luego unos días en Panguipulli. Consulté ambas ciudades y sus alrededores y apunté que en Pucón quería ir a La Poza, recorrer la ciudad y tal vez hacer rafting (que sí lo hice), pero también hice un tour que no estaba programado y conocí los Ojos del Caburgua y unas aguas termales. De Panguipulli sabía todavía menos, pero sí había planificado ir a la Reserva Biológica Huilo-Huilo (aunque no había sacado tickets antes de llegar). Más allá de ir a esa Reserva y de las caminatas con vista al lago Panguipulli, no había pensado en ir a ningún otro sitio, pero cuando pasé por una oficina de turismo municipal en donde me dieron un mapa y algunas recomendaciones, un plan saltó a la vista. Me enteré de que a más o menos una hora de camino desde Panguipulli se podía llegar a Puerto Fuy, una ciudad pequeña ubicada al borde del Lago Pirihueico y desde donde se puede tomar un catamarán para navegar el lago hasta un pueblo aún más pequeño llamado Puerto Pirihueico. Panguipulli está a más de 800 Km desde Santiago, era la primera vez que estaba tan al Sur y una parte de mí quiso saber cuán más al Sur podía llegar en ese viaje. En total, desde Panguipulli hasta Puerto Pirihueico hay unos 90 Km, combinando carretera y navegación, así que una húmeda mañana del mes de diciembre me embarqué hacia esa remota ciudad de Chile que está apenas a 10 minutos por carretera del paso Huahum, en la frontera con Argentina. No tenía la menor idea de qué iba a encontrar allí, pero quise ir de todas maneras.
The boat ride lasted about ninety minutes during which I felt like a time traveler. The landscape looked almost virgin. The first explorers who came to these lands must have seen something very similar: islands, mountains and dense vegetation on both sides of the lake. No houses, buildings, offices... the hand of man was only evident in the presence of the boat, but all around was nature in its maximum splendor. The landscape was somewhat monotonous, but without a doubt it was an incredible experience, like traveling through the Earth before time.
El viaje en barco duró unos noventa minutos durante los que me sentí como un viajero en el tiempo. El paisaje lucía casi virgen. Los primeros exploradores que vinieron por estas tierras debieron ver algo muy parecido: islas, montaña y vegetación tupida a uno y otro lado del lago. Nada de casas, edificios, oficinas... la mano del hombre sólo se evidenciaba en la presencia de la embarcación, pero alrededor todo era naturaleza en su máximo esplendor. El paisaje era algo monótono, pero sin duda fue una experiencia increíble, como estar recorriendo la tierra antes del tiempo.
Arriving at Puerto Pirihueico is a bath of calm. Due to its remote location, modest size and few inhabitants, the town is very quiet. Once we got off the boat, people went on their way; I stayed in front of the lake shore where only the wind and the singing of some birds could be heard. The village as such is a few streets, a few houses, some small boats, horses... I didn't ask what the people lived there, I didn't investigate if there were schools or what else you could do but eat, drink something and walk a little. And I didn't ask any of that because on one side of the pier I saw, in the distance, the ruins of a building that caught my attention. I have always been fascinated by ruins. Standing in front of the vestiges of what was once a church, a house, a city, makes me think of all that must have happened there and how the inexorable passage of time erases everything. Given enough time and without the preserving hand of man, many ruins we know today would have disappeared completely. As I approached the site I saw a plaque with information and learned that the building had been a hotel called Hostería Pirihueico. Opened in February 1947, this must have been a paradise. Even more inaccessible then, it amazes me to think how they built it, but I saw some pictures of the time and it was a beautiful place that nevertheless worked only 7 years, until 1954. After that, time went by, the property and the land changed owners several times, it even belonged to the Chilean Army for a while, someone tried - unsuccessfully - to reopen the inn, until 1996, also in a month of February, a fire consumed what was left of the place.
Llegar a Puerto Pirihueico es un baño de calma. Debido a su remota ubicación, su modesto tamaño y sus pocos habitantes, el poblado es muy tranquilo. Una vez que descendimos de la embarcación la gente fue tomando su camino; yo me quedé frente a la orilla del lago en donde sólo se oía el viento y el canto de algunas aves. El pueblo como tal son unas pocas calles, pocas casas, algunos botes pequeños, caballos... no pregunté de qué vivía la gente allí, no investigué si había escuelas o qué más se podía hacer que no fuese comer, beber algo y caminar un poco. Y no pregunté nada de eso porque hacia un costado del muelle vi, en la distancia, las ruinas de un edificio que llamaron mi atención. Siempre me he sentido fascinado por las ruinas. Estar frente a los vestigios de lo que fue una iglesia, una casa, una ciudad, me hace pensar en todo lo que debió pasar allí y en cómo el inexorable paso del tiempo lo borra todo. Con el tiempo suficiente y sin la mano conservadora del hombre, muchas ruinas que hoy conocemos habrían desaparecido por completo. Al acercarme al lugar vi una placa con información y me enteré que el edifico había sido un hotel llamado Hostería Pirihueico. Inaugurada en Febrero de 1947, esto debió ser un paraíso. Aun más inaccesible entonces, me asombra pensar cómo hicieron para edificarla, pero vi algunas imágenes de la época y era una belleza de lugar que sin embargo funcionó apenas 7 años, hasta 1954. Después, el tiempo fue pasando, la propiedad y el terreno cambiaron de dueño varias veces, incluso perteneció al Ejército de Chile durante un tiempo, alguien intentó - sin éxito - reabrir la hostería, hasta que en 1996, también en un mes de Febrero, un incendio consumió lo que quedaba del lugar.
Barely a few walls remain standing of what was once this incredible place, but these ruins also held appeal for me. I walked through what must have once been the main hall and sat in front of the remains of the stone fireplace that I saw in some archival images. Some remnants of the floor made me realize which way the kitchen had been and then I sat and watched the stillness of the lake through some now non-existent windows. In high season there are several trips a day between Puerto Fuy and Puerto Pirihueico, but in low season (I went just the last week before the start of high season) there's only one trip a day to go and one to return. That is to say, those of us who embarked in Puerto Fuy just to come to Puerto Pirihueico barely had a few hours in the place. I don't know what the others did, but I spent most of that time inside the ruins of the inn evoking a past I didn't live. Perhaps if it hadn't burned down in the nineties, it could have been preserved as a museum or something, which would have given it all the vibe of an Overlook Hotel, inhabited by presences from another life, but fate had other plans. I haven't set foot in this place again, but I haven't been able to forget it either, have any of you toured the ruins of a similar building? do you like to visit abandoned places? Apenas unos pocos muros quedan en pie de lo que fue ese increíble lugar, pero estas ruinas también tenían atractivo para mí. Recorrí lo que en otra época debió ser el salón principal y me senté frente a los restos de la chimenea de piedra que vi en algunas imágenes de archivo. Algunos restos del piso me hicieron darme cuenta de hacia dónde estuvo la cocina y luego me senté a observar la quietud del lago a través de unas ventanas ya inexistentes. En temporada alta hay varios viajes al día entre Puerto Fuy y Puerto Pirihueico, pero en temporada baja (yo fui justo la última semana antes del inicio de la temporada alta) hay un único viaje al día para ir y uno para volver. Es decir, quienes nos embarcamos en Puerto Fuy sólo para venir a conocer Puerto Pirihueico apenas tuvimos unas horas en el lugar. No sé qué hicieron los demás, pero yo pasé casi todo ese tiempo dentro de las ruinas de la hostería evocando un pasado que no viví. Quizás si no se hubiera incendiado en los años noventa, habría podido conservarse como museo o algo así, lo que le hubiera dado toda la vibra de un Hotel Overlook, habitado por presencias de otra vida, pero el destino tenía otros planes. No he vuelto a pisar este lugar, pero tampoco he podido olvidarlo, ¿alguno de ustedes ha recorrido las ruinas de un edificio similar? ¿les gusta conocer sitios abandonados?
