A couple of days ago, I posted about my visit to Tigre, a city north of Buenos Aires that boasts a stunning river of the same name. My visit there made me think about other rivers and lakes I've visited in my life and, unlike the Argentinian river, I was able to navigate in one way or another. So today, I want to share a wonderful experience I had in southern Chile a few summers ago.
Hace un par de días subí un post sobre mi visita a Tigre, una ciudad al norte de Buenos Aires que tiene un impresionante río del mismo nombre. La visita a ese lugar me hizo pensar en otros ríos y lagos que he visitado en mi vida y que - a diferencia del río argentino - sí pude navegar de una u otra forma. Así que hoy les quiero compartir una gran experiencia que viví en el sur de Chile hace algunos veranos atrás.
Chile is a country located in the south of the American continent, so to speak of southern Chile is to speak doubly of southern territories. With about 5,000 km long, Chile is a country whose south zone is quite extensive and for many that center begins in Pucón, a city located about eight hours by car from Santiago, the capital. One of the things I liked most about Pucón is that from any corner of the city you can see the Villarrica Volcano. Chile is a land of volcanoes, most of them inactive, but in the case of the Villarrica is one of the few active volcanoes that can be climbed to the top. That is, one can - with a guide, of course - reach the very crater of the volcano. But besides that, its climate, cooler than that of Santiago, and its gastronomy, one of the main attractions of Pucón for national and foreign visitors is the possibility of practicing water sports; there's a reason why is known as the Chilean capital of adventure tourism. Pucón is located in the Araucanía Region and in its surroundings there are many green landscapes, lakes, coast, rivers and various bodies of water where people can practice canoeing, rowing and of course rafting. Despite going for a very short time - just a couple of days - I wanted to take advantage of the time and do a little bit of everything and being in a city famous for its adventure tourism, I couldn't not participate in some activities. Now, there is something important to say. I love the beach, the ocean, the rivers, the lakes, the hot springs... but I don't know how to swim, how can I practice a water sport with this lack of skill in something so basic?
Chile es un país ubicado al sur del continente americano, con lo que hablar del sur de Chile es hablar doblemente de territorios australes. Con unos 5.000 Km de largo, Chile es un país cuya zona sur es bastante extensa y para muchos ese centro empieza en Pucón, ciudad ubicada a unas 8 horas en auto desde Santiago, la capital. Una de las cosas que más me gustó de Pucón es que desde cualquier rincón de la ciudad se puede ver el Volcán Villarrica. Chile es tierra de volcanes, la mayoría de ellos inactivos, pero en el caso del Villarrica es uno de los pocos volcanes activos que pueden subirse hasta la cima. Es decir, uno puede - con un guía, por supuesto - llegar hasta el mismísimo cráter del volcán. Pero además de eso, de su clima, más fresco que el de Santiago, y su gastronomía, uno de los principales atractivos de Pucón para los visitantes nacionales y extranjeros es la posibilidad de practicar deportes acuáticos; no por nada es conocida como la capital chilena del turismo de aventura. Pucón está ubicada en la Región la Araucanía y a sus alrededores hay muchos paisajes verdes, lagos, costa, ríos y diversos cuerpos de agua en donde las personas pueden practicar canotaje, remo y por supuesto rafting. A pesar de ir por muy poco tiempo - apenas un par de días - quise aprovechar el tiempo y hacer un poco de todo y estando en una ciudad famosa por su turismo de aventura, no podía no participar de algunas actividades. Ahora bien, hay algo importante que decir. Amo la playa, el océano, los ríos, los lagos, las aguas termales... pero no sé nadar, ¿cómo practicar un deporte acuático con esta falta de destreza en algo tan básico?
As it turns out, you don't need to know how to swim to go rafting. First, because it's not that complicated, and second, because you wear a life jacket at all times, so if you fall into the water, you have to worry more about staying afloat than swimming. Of course, before you jump in, the people in charge of the activity teach you the position, the technique, and give you tips. Also, on the tour I took, there were many people, in groups of six to eight, all aboard a raft accompanied by one of the guides at the helm. The experience was always demonstrated with professionalism, responsibility, empathy, and respect. However, at first, I was very scared.
Pues resulta que no hace falta saber nadar para hacer rafting. Primero porque no es tan complejo y segundo porque en todo momento llevas un chaleco salvavidas, así que, si llegas a caer al agua, más que nadar debes preocuparte por mantenerte a flote. Por supuesto que antes de lanzarte al agua, las personas encargadas de la actividad te enseñan la posición, la técnica y te dan consejos. Además, en el caso del tour que tomé, había muchas personas, en grupos de entre seis y ocho, todas a bordo de una balsa acompañados de alguno de los guías en el timón. En todo momento hubo demostración de profesionalismo, responsabilidad, empatía y respeto. Sin embargo, al principio estaba muy asustado.
I think, of my entire group—my squad—I was the most nervous. The rest of the group consisted of two adult women accompanied by three teenagers and a man in his sixties, who was the only one who had ever rafted before. Due to weight distribution, strength, etc., the guide placed the man and me at the front of the raft, so we would be the first to hit the rocks, the current, and the force of the river. I admit I was very tense at the beginning, but as the minutes passed, I felt comfortable and thoroughly enjoyed the time—just over an hour—we spent on the river. Serene at first, challenging in the middle, and exciting at the end, the trip evolved more or less as shown in the following photos, to which I added a wider postcard of the volcano view above. Creo que, de todo mi grupo - mi squad - yo era el que estaba más nervioso. El resto del grupo estaba conformado por dos mujeres adultas acompañadas de tres adolescentes y un hombre de unos sesenta años, que era el único que había practicado rafting antes. Por temas de distribución de peso, fuerza, etc, el guía nos ubicó al hombre y a mí al frente de la balsa, así que íbamos a ser los primeros en impactar contra las rocas, la corriente y la fuerza del río. Reconozco que estaba muy tenso al inicio, pero conforme pasaron los minutos, me fui sintiendo a gusto y disfruté muchísimo el tiempo - poco más de una hora - que pasamos en el río. Sereno al principio, desafiante a la mitad y emocionante al final, el paseo evolucionó más o menos como lo muestran las siguientes fotos a las que agregué al final una postal más amplia de la vista del volcán que dejé más arriba. Being a land of adventurers, Pucón offers a wide range of activities and sports, so you're sure to find something fun to do, but I highly recommend rafting. There are two levels: basic and advanced. The first—which is what I did—is suitable for children 14 and older because, although there are strong currents, it doesn't have the steepest drops of the higher level. In my case, I did it with a company named after the river: Trancura; but there are many options in the city. So, if you have the opportunity to visit Chile during the summer, go visit Pucón and take advantage of some adventure tourism. Maybe you can even climb the Villarrica volcano, an activity I had yet to try. Do any of you know southern Chile? Have you tried rafting? I'll read you in the comments.
Por ser tierra de aventureros, en Pucón hay mucha oferta de actividades y deportes, así que seguramente encontrarán algo divertido que hacer, pero les recomiendo mucho hacer Rafting. Hay dos niveles, el básico y el avanzado. El primero - que fue el que yo hice - es apto para niños a partir de los 14 años porque aunque hay corrientes fuertes, no tiene caídas verticales tan pronunciadas como el nivel más alto. En mi caso lo hice con una empresa llamada igual que el río: Trancura; pero hay muchas opciones en la ciudad. Así que si tienen la oportunidad de visitar Chile durante la temporada estival, vayan a darse una vuelta por Pucón y aprovechen de hacer turismo de aventura, a lo mejor hasta pueden subir al volcán Villarrica, actividad que me quedó pendiente ¿alguno de ustedes conoce el sur de Chile? ¿han practicado rafting?
