Mi viaje a Quito fue casi improvisado. A pricipios de 2013, conversaba con mi novia de ese momento (A quien llamaremos "L" a lo largo del post), sobre realizar un viaje que no saliera tan costoso desde Caracas. Vimos varias opciones y la que más nos llamó la atención fue Ecuador.
Aunque yo había ido en 1981, quería volver después de tanto tiempo y uno de los motivos es que gran parte de mi familia es de allá. La otra excusa, es visitar un país cerca para no pagar tanto en avión y que no sea costoso su turismo.
Te puedo decir que Ecuador cumple con ese especial atractivo para el turista; donde no conseguirás las típicas aglomeraciones de turistas por todas partes y que tiene muchos atractivos que están cercas unos de otros. También sale muy económico ir de uno a otro; siempre que sepas cómo hacerlo. Quédate en este post que te lo voy a explicar.
My trip to Quito was almost improvised. At the beginning of 2013, I was talking with my girlfriend at the time (who we will call "L" throughout the post), about taking a trip that would not be so expensive from Caracas. We looked at several options and the one that caught our attention was Ecuador.
Although I had been there in 1981, I wanted to go back after such a long time and one of the reasons is that most of my family is from there. The other excuse is to visit a nearby country so as not to pay so much in airplane tickets and not to make tourism so expensive.
I can tell you that Ecuador fulfills that special attraction for the tourist; where you will not get the typical crowds of tourists everywhere and has many attractions that are close to each other. It is also very economical to go from one to another; as long as you know how to do it. Stay in this post and I will explain it to you.

Lo primero que hicimos antes del viaje fue buscar alojamiento. Aunque tengo familia allá, era complicado que me hospedaran, así que buscamos algo céntrico y económico. Conseguimos una posada genial; perfecta para lo que buscábamos. Súper céntrica y económica. Costó $27 la noche con desayuno incluido.
La posada se encuentra a 2 calles de la Plaza Foch, un lugar muy famoso en Quito por su ambiente en las noches, aunque también en el día. Lleno de restaurantes y lugares nocturnos.

The first thing we did before the trip was to look for accommodation. Although I have family there, it was difficult to find lodging, so we looked for something central and inexpensive. We found a great inn; perfect for what we were looking for. Super central and economical. It cost $27 a night with breakfast included.
The posada is located 2 blocks from Plaza Foch, a very famous place in Quito for its atmosphere at night, but also during the day. Full of restaurants and night spots.

Pero antes de pasar un rato genial en la Plaza Foch; nos establecimos en el hotel y salimos a almorzar. Fuimos caminando y aprovechando para explorar la zona. Nos conseguimos un restaurante de comida típica ecuatoriana y disfrutamos de un delicioso almuerzo que incluía un ceviche de camarones y una deliciosa cerveza. Quedé enamorado de la cerveza ecuatoriana, por su tamaño y su precio XD.
Para mí se come muy bien en Ecuador, aunque varias personas me han dicho que no le gusta la comida de allá. No sé si será porque estoy acostumbrado desde pequeño por mi familia, pero no hay plato que no me guste.
But before having a great time at Plaza Foch; we settled down at the hotel and went out for lunch. We walked around and took the opportunity to explore the area. We got ourselves a typical Ecuadorian food restaurant and enjoyed a delicious lunch that included a shrimp ceviche and a delicious beer. I fell in love with the Ecuadorian beer, because of its size and price XD.
For me they eat very well in Ecuador, although several people have told me that they don't like the food there. I don't know if it's because I've been used to it since I was a child because of my family, but there's no dish I don't like.

Quito es una ciudad grande con gente tranquila. No es la típica metrópolis con gente estresada de un lado al otro. Mi percepción es que la gente se lo toma con calma. Es probable que debido a la altitud, ya que se encuentra sobre los 2.800 metros del nivel del mar; así que una de las advertencias que te hacen cuando viajas, es que pases unos días de aclimatación sin hacer movimientos bruscos.
La capital de Ecuador fue la primera ciudad junto con Krakovia (Polonia) en ser declarada patrimonio de la humanidad. Dicen que es la capital más antigua de Sur América y su caso histórico es bellísimo.
Quito is a big city with calm people. It's not the typical metropolis with people stressing from one side to the other. My perception is that people take it easy. It is probably due to the altitude, as it is above 2,800 meters above sea level; so one of the warnings they give you when you travel, is to spend a few days acclimatizing without making sudden movements.
The capital of Ecuador was the first city along with Krakow (Poland) to be declared a World Heritage Site. It is said to be the oldest capital of South America and its historical case is beautiful.

Cada esquina tiene su encanto, con un estilo colonial y donde no conseguirás rascacielos. También es sumamente limpia y las montañas y volcanes que la rodean son impresionantes.
Se encuentra en la zona más verde de Ecuador, después del Amazonas. Caminarla es un placer. Solo tiene el inconveniente de carecer de metro y hace que el transporte público se congestione.
Every corner has its charm, with a colonial style and where you won't get skyscrapers. It is also extremely clean and the surrounding mountains and volcanoes are impressive.
It is located in the greenest area of Ecuador, after the Amazon. Walking it is a pleasure. It only has the disadvantage of lacking a subway and makes public transport congested.
En la Plaza Grande se encuentra el Palacio de Carondelet (sede de la Presidencia) y a su lado la Catedral Metropolitana (sede de la Arquidiócesis de Quito); donde recuerdo a una señora gritando consignas políticas contra los venezolanos. Lo extraño es que en esa época los venezolanos solo iban a Ecuador de turismo, a diferencia de años más tarde que fueron miles huyendo de Venezuela.
In the Plaza Grande is the Carondelet Palace (seat of the Presidency) and next to it the Metropolitan Cathedral (seat of the Archdiocese of Quito); where I remember a lady shouting political slogans against Venezuelans. The strange thing is that at that time Venezuelans were only going to Ecuador for tourism, unlike years later when thousands were fleeing from Venezuela.

Basílica del Voto Nacional
Es el templo Neogótico más grande de América y es algo espectacular. Tiene unos vitrales impresionantes y pido disculpas por no tener fotos por dentro. Es la estructura más alta de Quito con 115 metros. Fue bendecida por el Papa Juan Pablo II en 1985.
It is the largest Neo-Gothic temple in America and it is something spectacular. It has impressive stained glass windows and I apologize for not having pictures inside. It is the tallest structure in Quito with 115 meters. It was blessed by Pope John Paul II in 1985.

Lago San Pablo
Desde que salimos de Caracas ya sabía que la mejor estrategia para este viaje, era rentar un vehículo, ya que Quito tienen muchas atracciones en sus afueras y cercanías. Con un vehículo tienes las libertad de movilizarte cuándo y a dónde quieras. Esto sería el mayor consejo de viaje que te daría si vas a Quito, porque solo si paseas por el centro de la ciudad te estarías perdiendo muchísimo.
El auto lo alquilamos en el aeropuerto y lo regresaríamos al regreso a Venezuela. Es impresionante lo que se ahorra uno implementando esta estrategia y nos dimos cuenta, cuando nos conseguimos otros turistas venezolanos en el Cotopaxi que nos comentaron lo que habían gastado en el tour hacia allá. Fueron más de $60 por persona y solo en un paseo. La gasolina en Ecuador es barata y el auto no llegaba a $25 por día. Fue uno pequeño pero como no estábamos apurados, nos llevó a todas partes.
Since we left Caracas I knew that the best strategy for this trip was to rent a vehicle, since Quito has many attractions in its outskirts and surroundings. With a vehicle you have the freedom to move when and where you want. This would be the biggest travel tip I would give you if you go to Quito, because if you just drive around downtown you would be missing out on a lot.
We rented the car at the airport and would return it when we got back to Venezuela. It is impressive what you save by implementing this strategy and we realized it when we met other Venezuelan tourists in Cotopaxi who told us what they had spent on the tour there. It was more than $60 per person and only in one tour. Gasoline in Ecuador is cheap and the car was less than $25 per day. It was a small one but since we were not in a hurry, it took us everywhere.

Uno de los paseos fue a Otavalo, conocido por su comercio de cuero. Es un pueblo lleno de tiendas con ropa de cuero espectacular y muy económico para la calidad que tiene.
En el camino hacia Otavalo te consigues con el Lago San Pablo, un lugar bellísimo lleno de posadas y restaurantes en su orilla. También hay muchas actividades acuáticas.
Al regreso de Otavalo, paramos en el Lago para comer en el restaurante de uno de los mayores hoteles de la zona. El lugar es increíble, aunque hay mucha gente, ya que no solo los húspedes del hotel están por ahí, sino que los visitantes entras al hotel como si fuera una atracción turística. La mayoría ni siquiera comen en el restaurante, sino que entran a tomar fotos.
Apartando esto, la experiencia es muy buena, por la vista que tiene. Platos bien presentados, aunque recuerdo que el sabor no era del otro mundo. La foto es muy generosa. Les aseguro que es más vista que gusto.
One of the trips was to Otavalo, known for its leather trade. It is a town full of stores with spectacular leather clothing and very inexpensive for the quality it has.
On the way to Otavalo you come across San Pablo Lake, a beautiful place full of inns and restaurants on its shore. There are also many water activities.
On the way back from Otavalo, we stopped at the lake to have lunch in the restaurant of one of the biggest hotels in the area. The place is amazing, although it is very crowded, as not only the hotel guests are around, but visitors enter the hotel as if it were a tourist attraction. Most of them don't even eat in the restaurant, but come in to take pictures.
Apart from that, the experience is very good, because of the view. Well presented dishes, although I remember the taste was not great. The photo is very generous. I assure you that it is more sight than taste.

Mitad del Mundo - Middle of the World
Otras de las atracciones que no te puedes perder si vas a Quito, es la Ciudad Mitad del Mundo, donde hay un monumento que señala la división del norte con el sur del planeta. Justo donde me tomé la foto, estoy pisando con un pie en el norte y con el otro el sur.
Another attraction that you can not miss if you go to Quito, is the Ciudad Mitad del Mundo, where there is a monument that marks the division of the north and south of the planet. Right where I took the picture, I am stepping with one foot in the north and the other in the south.

La Ciudad de la Mitad del Mundo, cuenta con otros atractivos, como varios restaurantes y tiendas de souvenir. También hay un pequeño museo.
Está todo muy bien diseñado, por lo que pasas un rato muy agradable conociendo el lugar.

Te consigues varios puestos cocinando Cuy, un roedor que se come mucho en Ecuador. Puede ser impactante para algunas personas, ya que este animal es muy bonito y tierno en su estado natural, muy parecido a un Hamnster. Mejor no les muestro fotos del "antes".
Nosotros no lo comimos. No es algo que me abriera el apetito XD. Nuestra comida fue una Fanesca. Una sopa muy típica que contiene doce granos en referencia a los 12 apóstoles y pescado en referencia a Cristo.
You get several stalls cooking Cuy, a rodent that is eaten a lot in Ecuador. It can be shocking for some people, as this animal is very cute and cuddly in its natural state, very similar to a Hamnster. I better not show you "before" pictures.
We didn't eat it. It is not something that would whet my appetite XD. Our meal was a Fanesca. A very typical soup containing twelve grains in reference to the 12 apostles and fish in reference to Christ.
Teleférico - Cableway
Mi primera impresión del Teleférico en Quito no fue muy buena. Estábamos con poco dinero en efectivo y no aceptaban tarjeta. Para nosotros fue impactante como la principal atracción turística del centro de Quito, solo aceptara efectivo. Por otro lado el precio no era nada económico; costando $19 por persona.
A pesar de esto decidimos vivir la experiencia, porque si no, seguro nos íbamos a arrepentir.
Otra de las cosas que pudimos ver, es que la estación no tenía un buen mantenimiento. Escaleras mecánicas dañadas y sectores sucios, nos dejaron una muy mala impresión.
My first impression of the Teleférico in Quito was not very good. We were low on cash and they did not accept cards. It was shocking to us that the main tourist attraction in downtown Quito only accepted cash. On the other hand the price was not cheap at all; costing $19 per person.
Despite this we decided to live the experience, because if not, we were sure we were going to regret it.
Another thing we could see was that the station was not well maintained. Damaged escalators and dirty areas left us with a very bad impression.

Después nos olvidamos del trago amargo, gracias a las vistas espectaculares cuando subimos. A una altura de 4.100 metros había que caminar despacio porque uno se cansa rápido.
Arriba hay una capilla en medio de unas praderas. El silencio es sabroso. Lo que no nos ayudó es que estaba nublado y no pudimos observar los otros volcanes que se ven a lo lejos. Les dejo con las fotos...
Afterwards we forgot about the bitter pill, thanks to the spectacular views as we climbed. At an altitude of 4,100 meters you had to walk slowly because you get tired quickly.
At the top there is a chapel in the middle of meadows. The silence is delightful. What did not help us is that it was cloudy and we could not see the other volcanoes in the distance. I leave you with the photos......

En la estación de Teleférico hay un parque de atracciones que posee un Karting. Ahí pasamos un rato compitiendo y descangando un poco de adrenalina. Es una experiencia muy divertida y relaja mucho.
Solo pagamos el mínimo de tiempo ya que solo aceptaban efectivo.
At the cable car station there is an amusement park that has a Karting. There we spent some time racing and getting a little adrenaline rush. It is a very fun and relaxing experience.
We only paid the minimum amount of time since they only accepted cash.
Cotopaxi
Es el volcán activo más alto del mundo con una elevación de 5897 metros sobre el nivel del mar. Nosotros llegamos a una altura aproximada de 4.500 metros al refugio José Ribas.
Desde la entrada al parque nacional en auto, hay que recorrer unos 20 kilómetros hasta llegar al estacionamiento. Desde ahí se comienza a subir caminando duránte una hora en buenas condiciones. Debo decir que cansa mucho po rla altitud más lo empinado de la subida, así que hay que tener un mínimo de condición física. No cualquier turista llegará.
Solo tengo esta foto cuando llegué al refugio. Estaba con mucha neblina, pero les recomiendo buscar fotos del Cotopaxi en Google que se van a sorprender de lo bello que es.
It is the highest active volcano in the world with an elevation of 5897 meters above sea level. We arrived at an altitude of approximately 4,500 meters at the José Ribas refuge.
From the entrance to the national park by car, you have to drive about 20 kilometers to the parking lot. From there you start walking uphill for about an hour in good conditions. I must say that it is very tiring because of the altitude and the steepness of the climb, so you must have a minimum of physical condition. Not every tourist will make it.
I only have this photo when I arrived at the refuge. It was very foggy, but I recommend you to look for photos of Cotopaxi on Google, you will be surprised how beautiful it is.
Recomendaciones de viaje a Quito - Travel recommendations to Quito
- Alquila un auto en el aeropuerto. La gasolina es barata y ahorrasrás en desplazamiento
- Busca hospedaje en una zona céntrica
- Aclimátate a la altura los dos primeros días. Respira profundo y no corras.
- Puedes caminar por la noche. Quito es muy seguro.
- Lleva efectivo. No te confíes de sistemas de pago electrónicos pues allá no están acostumbrados y pocos lugares aceptan tarjeta.
- Visita los alrededores de Quito.
- Esto es un viaje de una semana. Si vas más tiempo, planifica una excursión a las Islas Galápagos.
- La comida, gasolina, hospedaje y peajes son económicos.
- No la recomiendo para hacer compras de ropa o artefactos electrónicos. Suelen estar más caros que en otros países.

- This is a one week trip. If you go longer, plan an excursion to the Galapagos Islands.
- Food, gas, lodging and tolls are inexpensive.
- I do not recommend it for shopping for clothes or electronics. They are usually more expensive than in other countries.
