Once the plan had changed dramatically for me and my new destination was set to go to Bolivia for the first time, everything took on a different colour. In all this time travelling I had never left Argentina for more than 24 hours, but I was looking forward to doing so now that I had a travel companion. Departing from the capital of Salta, we headed north along the famous Ruta 40. We knew that arriving in the neighbouring country in the next few days would involve a significant change in altitude, so we wanted to prepare for that and not suffer from mountain sickness. For this we made some intermediate stops that allowed us to climb gradually and get our bodies used to it. One of the places we visited was the Serranías del Hornocal in Jujuy, which are not only beautiful, but also have the altitude we were looking for ❤️.
Una vez que el plan había cambiado rotundamente para mí y mi nuevo destino estaba fijado en ir a Bolivia por primera vez, todo tomó otro color. En todo este tiempo viajando nunca había salido de Argentina por más de 24 horas, pero tenía muchas ganas de hacerlo ahora que tenía un compañero de viaje. Partiendo desde la capital de Salta, nos dirigimos hacia el norte atravesando la famosa Ruta 40. Sabíamos que llegar al país vecino en los próximos días implicaría un cambio de altura importante, por lo que queríamos prepararnos para eso y no sufrir mal de montaña. Para eso hicimos algunas paradas intermedias que nos permitieron ir subiendo gradualmente y acostumbrar nuestros cuerpor a eso. Uno de los lugares que visitamos fue las Serranías del Hornocal en Jujuy, que además de hermosas, tienen la altura que estábamos buscando alcanzar ❤️.
On our first day together, the Dutch guest and I had driven the little car to the village of Tilcara in Jujuy. Having passed through the Jujuy yungas, this stretch took us more than 200 km and more than half of the afternoon. The car is a small Susuki 4x4 that the guest had bought in Chile precisely for this trip. This was a very smart decision, as he planned to be driving for more than 6 months in South America. On this part of his trip I would be his companion for three weeks, which seemed very crazy to me after having always been travelling alone 😃.
En nuestro primer día de viaje juntos, el huésped holandés y yo habíamos llegado en el pequeño autito hasta el pueblo de Tilcara en Jujuy. Habiendo pasado por las yungas jujeñas, este tramo nos llevó más de 200 km y más de la mitad de la tarde. El autito es un pequeño Susuki 4x4 que el huésped había comprado en Chile precisamente para este viaje. Esta fue una decisión muy inteligente, ya que planeaba estar paseando más de 6 meses en Sudamérica. En esta parte de su viaje yo sería su acompañante durante tres semanas, lo que me parecía muy loco después de haber estado viajando siempre sola 😃.
The little car can't go that fast, so we were practically forced to take it easy, as we never exceeded 80 km/h. By the time we got to Tilcara in Jujuy it was already dark, so we found a hostel to sleep in for $20 a night and couldn't do much more until the next morning when we went out to do a bit of sightseeing. This place on route 40 is one of the most touristic towns in the north of my country and one of the most recommended to come and visit this province 😃.
El pequeño auto no puede ir tan rápido, por lo que estuvimos practicamente obligados a hacer el paseo con calma ya que nunca superábamos los 80 km/h. Para cuando llegamos a Tilcara en Jujuy ya era de noche, así que encontramos un hostel para dormir a $20 la noche y no pudimos hacer mucho más hasta la mañana siguiente que salimos a recorrer un poco el pueblo. Este lugar sobre la ruta 40 es uno de los pueblos más turísticos del norte de mi país y uno de los recomendados para venir a conocer esta provincia 😃.
After having wandered around the village a bit in the morning, we spent our day visiting the Serranias del Hornocal, 70 km to the north of where we were. Going in this direction was part of our route to Bolivia, so as we stopped at some nice places to see, we were getting closer to our main destination. The road to these mountains is a gravel road in not so good condition, so we had to deflate the tyres a bit to move forward without problems 😅.
Después de haber paseado un poco por el pueblo en la mañana, invertimos nuestro día en ir a visitar las Serranias del Hornocal, a 70 km hacia el norte de donde estábamos. Ir en esta dirección era parte de nuestra ruta a Bolivia, así que mientras nos deteniamos en lugares lindos para ver, nos acercábamos a nuestro destino principal. El camino a estas montañas es un camino de ripio en no tan buen estado, por lo que tuvimos que desinflar un poco las ruedas para avanzar sin problemas 😅.
El Hornocal is a community of Jujuy located at 4350 masl. Its access is privatised, so we had to pay a ticket of only $1 to get through. The main attraction of this place is only access to the viewpoint of the colourful mountains, besides having toilets, a handicraft fair and a place to buy food. This spot is also very touristy and visited, so there are people here all the time. Coincidentally, in January 2024, when I was in the south of Argentina, I had bought a notebook with a picture of El Hornocal on it, not knowing that in September of the same year I would visit it in person. I suppose I had somehow intended to do so ❤️.
El Hornocal es una comunidad jujeña ubicada a 4350 msnm su acceso está privatizado, por lo que tuvimos que pagar un ticket de solo $1 para poder pasar. El atractivo principal de este lugar es solo acceder al mirador de las montañas coloridas, además de tener baños, una feria de artesanias y un local para comprar comida. Este punto también es muy turístico y visitado, por lo que todo el tiempo anda gente por acá. Casualmente, yo en enero 2024, cuando estaba en el sur de Argentina, me había comprado un cuaderno de notas con una imagen de El Hornocal, sin saber que en septiembre del mismo año lo visitaría en persona. Supongo que de algún modo lo intencioné ❤️.
This viewpoint, which usually has a lot of wind chill, puts you right in front of a colourful, peaked mountain range. This mountain, called the 14 colours, has several layers of beautifully coloured and hypnotic sediments, which make you feel small in front of its immensity and beauty. I had already visited this mountain range in 2021 when I made my first trip ‘alone’ with a group of retired people, but seeing it again had as much impact on me as the first time. This is one of those landscapes that move you ❤️.
Este mirador, que usualmente tiene muchísimo viento congelado, te pone justo enfrente de un cordón montañoso colorido y con forma de picos. Este cerro, llamado de los 14 colores, tiene varias capas de sedimentos de colores hermosos e hipnóticos, que se hacen sentir pequeño frente a la inmensidad y la belleza que tiene. Yo ya habia conocido esta serranía en el 2021 cuando hice mi primer viaje "sola" con un grupo de jubilados, pero verlo de nuevo me impactó tanto como la primera vez. Este es de esos paisajes que emocionan ❤️.
Besides serving as a shelter from the hurricane-force winds at such a high altitude, this viewpoint has a dome that serves as a handicrafts fair. This was not there during my visit in 2021, so it is quite new. Inside it they sold all kinds of handicrafts and also coca leaves and sweets, which is recommended for consumption so as not to suffer from altitude sickness. Luckily, the host had already been cautious and had a bag full of coca leaves, but we didn't use them that day because we were both fine. We only bought a sticker for the car for $1.5, more expensive than the entrance fee to see the mountain 😅.
Además de servir como reparo del viento huracanado que hay a tanta altura, este mirador cuenta con un domo que funciona como feria de artesanías. Esto sí que no estaba en mi visita del 2021, así que es bastante nuevo. Dentro de ella vendían todo tipo de manualidades y también hojas y caramelos de coca, lo recomendado para consumir y no sufrir mal de altura. Por suerte, el huésped ya había sido precavido y tenia una bolsa llena de hojas de coca, pero ese día no las usamos porque ambos estábamos bien. Solo compramos un sticker para el auto por $1.5, más caro que la entrada para entrar a ver la montaña 😅.
When we returned from El Hornocal, the sun was already going down and the whole mountain we had climbed looked golden and beautiful. Even looking at the path we had taken we could get some good views from there. Seeing me in Jujuy with M and his little car was something I had never imagined the first day we walked together in Cafayate, Salta a fortnight ago. That three-way ride, together with my co-worker from the hostel, could have been a casual one that afternoon, but then it escalated more than I thought it would. I'm glad we had the chance to continue travelling together a bit longer and just the two of us, as we had a lot of fun, if you know what I mean 😅.
Cuando volvimos de El Hornocal, el sol ya estaba bajando y toda la montaña que habíamos subido se veía dorada y hermosa. Incluso mirando el camino que habíamos hecho se podían obtener unas buenas vistas desde ahí. Verme en Jujuy con M y su pequeño autito era algo que nunca me imaginé el primer día que paseamos juntos en Cafayate, Salta hacían dos semanas atrás. Ese paseo de tres, en conjunto con mi compañera de trabajo del hostel, podría haber sido uno casual de solo esa tarde, pero luego escaló más de lo que pensaba. Me alegra que hayamos tenido la posibilidad de seguir viajando juntos un poco más y los dos solos, ya que nos divertimos bastante, si saben a lo que me refiero 😅.
Visiting the Serranía del Hornocal is a must if you are travelling north of the Ruta 40 in Argentina. Jujuy is full of colourful mountains, but these are beautiful and seeing them live is a thousand times better than in photos. I'm sure that if I hadn't been cancelled I would have come to see these mountains one more time, but I was happy that it all happened under those circumstances. The walk up there was just as great but even more memorable ❤️.
Visitar la Serranía del Hornocal es un paseo imperdible si estas recorriendo el norte de la Ruta 40 en Argentina. Jujuy está lleno de montañas coloridas, pero estas son hermosas y verlas en vivo y en directo es aún mil veces mejor que en fotos. Yo estoy segura de que si no me hubiesen cancelado el voluntariado hubiese llegado igual a ver estas montañas una vez más, pero estaba feliz de que todo haya transcurrido en esas circunstancias. El paseo hasta ahí fue igual de genial pero aún más memorable ❤️.
