Spending the entire summer in Ushuaia had the great advantage of being able to take advantage of all the trekking trails to their full potential. Snow can be very beautiful to see and enjoy, but when it comes to hiking in the mountains, it can complicate things a bit, and even radically alter the landscape. The warmest season at the end of the world—cold anyway—allowed me to enjoy clear hikes and incredible views when it melted. One of them was the picture-postcard view of the Vinciguerra Glacier, which I hadn't seen before without so much snow, and I must say I was able to appreciate it better this way ❤️.
Haber pasado el verano completo en Ushuaia tuvo la gran ventaja de poder aprovechar todos los senderos de trekking en su mejor versión. La nieve puede ser muy hermosa para ver y disfrutar un poco, pero cuando se trata de caminata en la montaña, puede complicar un poco las cosas, y hasta modificar radicalmente un paisaje. La época más calurosa en el fin del mundo, frío de todos modos, me permitió disfrutar de caminatas despejadas y vistas increíbles en su etapa derretida. Una de ellas fue la postal del Glaciar Vinciguerra, la cuál no había conocido antes sin tanta nieve y debo decir que de este modo se pudo apreciar mejor ❤️.
The hike to the Vinciguerra Glacier is a typical one for all tourists who come to Ushuaia. If you have some mountain experience, this hike is a must-do. It's only 7 km one way that takes you to a lagoon and the glacier itself, almost at the top of the mountain, creating a landscape you can't miss. Of course, I did this hike during my first stay in Ushuaia in 2023 and again during my second stay in 2024. But you know what? There's always time for a third time.
La caminata al Glaciar Vinciguerra es una de las típicas que hacen todos los turistas que llegan a la ciudad de Ushuaia. Si tenes algo de experiencia en la montaña, hacer esta caminata es imperdible. Solo son 7 km de ida que te llevan hasta una laguna y el propio glaciar casi en la cima de la montaña, formando un paisaje que no te podés perder. Por supuesto que esta caminata la hice en mi primera estadía en Ushuaia en 2023 y también la volví a hacer en mi segunda estadía en 2024. ¿Pero saben qué? Siempre hay tiempo para una tercera vez.
The start of this trail is shared with the one that leads to Laguna del Caminante, another trek I had done earlier this year, where I had the opportunity to leave my Worldmappin sticker. But this time, just after this sign, I took the detour to the right toward the glacier. For this hike, I didn't have a companion, something that discouraged me a little at first but later turned out to be an advantage because I was able to walk at my own pace without having to wait for anyone.
El inicio de este sendero se comparte con aquel que te lleva hasta la Laguna del Caminante, otro trekking que había hecho a principio de este año, en donde tuve la oportunidad de dejar mi sticker de Worldmappin. Pero esta vez, justo después de este cartel tomé el desvío hacia la derecha camino al glaciar. Para esta caminata no conseguí acompañante, algo que al principio me desanimó un poco pero que después terminó siendo una ventaja porque pude caminar a mi ritmo sin tener que ir esperando a nadie.
I don't normally like to repeat hikes I've already done (especially those I've already done before), but this time I was determined to reach the Vinciguerra Glacier to see it without snow. It was the end of March, and the weather had been nice lately, with no snowfall in the last few days, but I knew this wouldn't be the case for much longer. Since my plan was to go directly to the glacier and I was already familiar with the intermediate route, I completed the 7 kilometers almost without resting. My physical condition at that time was excellent; I don't know how much better it is now.
Normalmente no me gusta repetir caminatas que ya hice (y menos aquellas que ya había repetido anteriormente), pero esta vez estaba decidida a llegar hasta el Glaciar Vinciguerra para verlo sin nieve. Era fines de marzo y el clima había estado lindo ultimamente, sin nevadas en los últimos días, pero sabía que esto no sería así por mucho tiempo más. Como mi idea era ir directamente al glaciar y el camino intermedio ya lo conocía, hice los 7 kilómetros casi sin descansar. Mi estado físico en ese momento era buenísimo: ahora no sé que tanto lo está.
This trail is beautiful from beginning to end and is so well marked that during the thaw, it's almost impossible to get lost. To reach the trailhead, you have to take an Uber to the Andorra Valley and hike first through a valley, then up a mountain, then another valley, and finally up another mountain. Something I hadn't considered at the time of my visit was that it was already very close to autumn, and this surprised me when I reached the second valley. All the vegetation was tinged with reddish hues, creating another landscape I had never seen before.
Este sendero es hermoso de principio a fin y está tan bien señalizado que en época derretida es casi imposible perderse. Para llegar hasta el inicio es necesario tomar un Uber hasta el Valle de Andorra y caminar primero por un valle, luego montaña arriba, luego otro valle y finalmente más montaña arriba. Algo que no había tenido en cuenta al momento de mi visita es que ya estabamos muy cerca del otoño, y esto me sorprendió cuando llegué al segundo valle. Toda la vegetación estaba teñida de colores rojizos, formando otro paisaje inédito para mí.
Finally, the last stretch consists of an ascent to reach the lagoon with the glacier behind it. On my two previous visits, from the base of the valley to here, this was all snow. It was impossible to climb without the help of walking poles, but by that time the trail was more than manageable (except for the leg strength required due to the uneven terrain). But with my commitment to seeing the glacier, I climbed the entire route in one go, barely breathing.
Finalmente, el último tramo consiste en una subida hasta llegar a la laguna con el glaciar detrás. En mis dos visitas anteriores, desde la base del valle y hasta acá, todo esto era nieve. Sin ayuda de los bastones era imposible subir, pero para esa fecha el camino estaba más que amigable (excepto por la fuerza de piernas que hay que hacer por el desnivel del terreno). Pero con lo comprometida que estaba yo con ver el glaciar, subí todo de un tirón casi sin respirar.
You'd think that having seen a landscape couldn't possibly surprise you again, but this place doesn't live up to that hype: encountering this mountain and its glacier is always exciting. This lagoon is called Laguna de Los Témpanos, and unlike my two previous visits, where it had been frozen, this time it was completely melted, showing a beautiful greenish color. The mountain in the background containing the glacier was also melted, making the contrast even more beautiful.
Uno piensa que haber visto un paisaje no podría volver a sorprenderte, pero este lugar no cumple ese dicho: encontrarse con esta montaña y su glaciar siempre es emocionante. Esta laguna se llama Laguna de Los Témpanos, y a diferencia de mis dos anteriores visitas en donde había estado congelada, esta vez estaba toda derretida mostrando un color verdoso muy lindo. A su vez, la montaña de fondo conteniendo el glaciar también estaba derretida, por lo que el contraste era aún más hermoso.

I took a moment for my classic photo session with my phone propped up on a rock and then decided to find a spot closer to the glacier to have my lunch. I'd climbed up there with such a brisk pace that I'd covered the entire stretch in just an hour and fifty minutes. Previous trips had taken me no less than three hours, but of course, the lack of snow and having gone alone made everything much easier. This also allowed me to go wherever I wanted, even past the signs that said "no trespassing" (although I was careful, don't worry).
Me tomé un momento para mi clásica sesión de fotos con mi celular apoyado en una piedra y luego decidí ir a buscar un lugar más cercano al glaciar para tomar mi almuerzo. Había subido hasta ahí arriba con un paso tan ligero que en solo una hora y cincuenta minutos había hecho todo ese tramo. En las oportunidades anteriores no había tardado menos que tres horas, pero claro, la no-nieve y haber ido sola simplificó mucho todo. Esto también me permitía ir a donde yo quisiera, incluso más allá de los carteles que decían "no pasar" (aunque fui con cuidado, no se preocupen).
The sign specifically said not to approach, but that was the most beautiful thing about this place. Being able to get so close to the glacier, to the point of being able to touch it, is unbelievable. Plus, the snow was almost gone, so you could see almost the entire mass of ice. There were also the famous "caves" that everyone comes looking for, and some even go inside, but I'm not that irresponsible, so I only saw them from the outside. They were still incredible.
El cartel decía específicamente no acercarse, pero es que ahí estaba lo más lindo de este lugar. Poder estar tan cerca del glaciar hasta el punto de poder tocarlo es algo que no se puede creer. Además, ya casi no tenía nieve encima, así que se podía apreciar casi toda la masa de hielo completa. También estaban las famosas "cuevas" que todos vinen a buscar y a donde incluso algunos se meten, pero yo no soy tan irresponsable así que solo las ví desde afuera. Igualmente eran increíbles.
In Argentina, we have a very important and tourist-friendly glacier: the Perito Moreno Glacier in the province of Santa Cruz. This glacier is beautiful and unique in that it can be reached by vehicle and has an entire National Park surrounding it. But this glacier in Ushuaia is almost at the top of a mountain, and only adventurers can reach it. This is what makes the area peaceful, although we did have a few episodes of Israeli tourists having techno parties there during the summer.
En Argentina tenemos un glaciar muy importante y turístico: el Glaciar Perito Moreno en la provincia de Santa Cruz. Ese glaciar es hermoso y tiene la particularidad de poder llegar hasta el en vehículo y contar con todo un Parque Nacional a su alrededor. Pero este glaciar de Ushuaia está casi en la cima de una montaña y solo los aventureros llegan a él. Esto es lo que vuelve tranquilo el espacio, aunque en el verano tuvimos algunos episodios de turistas israelitas haciendo fiestas electrónicas en este lugar.
Luckily, by the time of my visit, everything was quiet and serene, with few respectful people around. Added to that was the fact that it was already a bit late to be on the mountain (almost 5 PM), but since the days were still long, I knew I had enough time to return to the hostel in peace. And also enough time for one more photo shoot: it might not be apparent in the photos, but if you want to see the sheer size of this glacier, just look at the girl standing next to it in the lower right corner of the first photo. The other one is me, with several photos for my social media 😂.
Por suerte, para el momento de mi visita todo estaba tranquilo y sereno, con pocas y respetuosas personas dando vueltas. Además, se sumaba el hecho de que ya era un poco tarde para estar en la montaña (casi 5 PM), pero como todavía los días eran largos, sabía que tenía tiempo suficiente para volver tranquila al hostel. Y, también tiempo suficiente para una sesión de fotos más: quizás en las fotos no se aprecie, pero si quieren ver lo gigante de este glaciar tan solo vean a la chica para al lado del él, en la esquina derecha inferior de la primera foto. La otra soy yo, con varias fotos para mis redes sociales 😂.

After flirting a bit in my photos, I finally had my lunch (improvised and not very nutritious, as always). What's beautiful about this place is also cold, so I could only stay still for a while before I started to freeze. I explored the area a bit more and then began my descent, happy to have achieved my goal of seeing the Vinciguerra Glacier without snow. I must say that the timing of this hike was perfect, because about three days later the autumn snowfall began, and surely, the landscape began its process of being covered over again. Everything was perfectly calculated 😃.
Después de coquetear un poco en mis fotos, finalmente tuve mi almuerzo (improvisado y poco nutritivo como siempre). Lo que tiene de lindo este lugar lo tiene de frío, así que solo pude estar un rato quieta hasta empezar a congelarme. Recorrí un poco más el lugar y luego emprendí mi bajada de la montaña, feliz por haber logrado mi objetivo de ver el Glaciar Vinciguerra sin nieve. Debo decir que el momento que elegí para esta caminata fue perfecto, porque unos tres días después empezaron las nevadas otoñales y seguramente, el paisaje comenzó su proceso de tapado otra vez. Todo estuvo calculado a la perfección 😃.
To this day, I take comfort in knowing that my days in Ushuaia were well spent. I saw everything I wanted to see and more, and I'm grateful for having had the strength to go wherever I wanted. If you ever visit Ushuaia, you can't miss this hike: it's easy enough to do without a guide in the summer, but during heavy snowfall, it might be worth hiring one. It all depends on each person's abilities and consciously choosing how to venture out: if we respect the mountains, they give us unforgettable experiences like this one ❤️.
Hasta el día de hoy me reconforta saber que mis días en Ushuaia fueron bien aprovechados. Vi todo lo que quería ver y más, y agradezco haber tenido la fuerza suficiente para poder ir a cualquier lugar que quería. Si algún día visitas Ushuaia, no podés perderte esta caminata: hacerla en verano es fácil como para ir sin guía, pero en época de nieve fuerte quizás convenga contratar uno. Todo siempre depende de las capacidades de cada uno y elegir a consciencia cómo aventurarse: si respetamos la montaña, nos regala experiencias inolvidables como esta ❤️.
