When you are traveling somewhere considered "very touristic", there will always be things to do in order to make the most of your stay there. You can do many and varied walks and hikes, but there are some classic postcards of the places that you can only get with the traditional tours of the area. One of these must-do's in Ushuaia was the famous "navigation of the end of the world", which takes you to the location of the classic lighthouse that appears in all the advertisements about this city. I hesitated a lot about whether to do this tour or not, but in the end I ended up thinking "if not now, when?" and of course I had to go 😅.
Cuando estás de viaje en algún lugar considerado como "muy turístico", siempre habrán cosas que hacer de forma casi obligatoria para aprovechar tu estadía ahí. Podés hacer muchos y muy variados paseos y caminatas, pero hay algunas postales clásicas de los lugares que solo se obtienen con las excursiones tradicionales de la zona. Uno de estos imperdibles en Ushuaia era la famosa "navegación del fin del mundo", la que te lleva hasta la ubicación del clásico faro que aparece en todas las publicidades sobre esta ciudad. Dudé bastante en si hacer este paseo o no, pero a fin de cuentas me terminó ganando el pensamiento de "¿si no es ahora, cuándo?" y por supuesto tuve que ir 😅.
One of the reasons I hesitated to do this ride in the first place was because it was quite expensive. Most tours in Ushuaia are expensive even for us Argentines, but that is the price to pay for being on a trip in this beautiful city. As a resident of this country, if your desire was to see the lighthouse at the end of the world and the fauna that inhabits the Beagle Channel, the cost was $48. This navigation had a duration of 5 to 6 hours, with departures in the morning and in the afternoon. As I had not spent much on other things up to that time, I could afford to pay for it and enjoy the experience ❣️.
Una de las razones por las que dudé en hacer este paseo en primer lugar fue porque era bastante costoso. La mayoría de las excursiones en Ushuaia son costosas incluso para nosotros los argentinos, pero es el precio que hay que pagar por estar de viaje en esta ciudad hermosa. Como residente de este país, si tu deseo era conocer el faro del fin del mundo y la fauna que habita en el Canal de Beagle, el costo era de $48. Esta navegación tenía una duración de 5 a 6 horas, con salidas por la mañana y por la tarde. Como hasta ese momento no había gastado mucho en otras cosas, podía permitirme pagarlo y disfrutar la experiencia ❣️.
Like most of these walks that do not require much physical activity, the place was full of older people and families with small children. There were not many lone travelers like me, so on the boat I sat with a family and shared the afternoon with them. Something that surprised me a lot during my stay in Ushuaia was that there were a lot of foreigners who come to visit this place, so many that there are almost no people who speak Spanish. If you want to communicate with someone there, you definitely need to know at least a little English 😅.
Como la mayoría de estos paseos que no requieren mucha actividad física, el lugar estaba lleno de gente mayor y de familias con niños pequeños. No habían muchos viajeros solitarios como yo, por lo que en el barco me senté con una familia y con ellos compartí la tarde. Algo que me sorprendió mucho en mi estadía en Ushuaia fue que había una gran cantidad de extranjeros que llegan a visitar este lugar, tantos que casi no hay gente que hable en español. Si querés comunicarte con alguien ahí, definitivamente tenés que saber un poco de inglés como mínimo 😅.
The interior of the ship had a small buffet, but you could also eat your own food. There was a tour guide service in English and Spanish, and also a photographer on board who at the end of the tour would sell you your photos and videos. Of course everyone who comes from so far away wants to have a good souvenir, so the photographer was in great demand by everyone. The day we sailed was a bit cool and windy but luckily it didn't rain a bit, contrary to what the forecast said. This was favorable for all of us because we were able to go out on the deck of the ship to see the scenery directly with our eyes. The ship had two levels, so there was plenty of room to see the whole place in 360° 😅.
El interior del barco contaba con un pequeño buffet, pero también podías consumir tus propios alimentos. Había un servicio de guía turístico en inglés y español, y también un fotógrafo a bordo que al final del paseo te vendía tus fotos y videos. Por supuesto que todos los que llegan desde tan lejos hasta acá quieren tener un buen recuerdo, así que el fotógrafo fue muy solicitado por todos. El día que nos tocó para navegar estaba algo fresco y ventoso pero por suerte no llovió ni un poco, contrario a lo que decía el pronóstico. Esto fue favorable para todos nosotros porque pudimos salir a la cubierta del barco a ver el paisaje directamente con nuestros ojos. El barco tenía dos niveles, así que había bastante espacio para ver todo el lugar en 360°😅.
It only took us a few minutes to reach one of the first small islands in the Beagle Channel where we could see the first animals of the afternoon. On these rocks we spotted the first colonies of sea lions and cormorants. I had already seen sea lions on other trips, but it was the first time I saw and heard about cormorants. These are birds that look like penguins from a distance, but you realize they are not when they take flight. Great camouflage 😅.
Solo nos tomó unos minutos llegar a unas de las primeras pequeñas islas dentro del Canal de Beagle en donde pudimos ver los primeros animales de la tarde. En estas rocas divisamos las primeras colonias de lobos marinos y también de cormoranes. Yo ya había visto lobos marinos en otros paseos, pero fue la primera vez que ví y escuché hablar sobre los cormoranes. Estas son aves que de lejos parecen pingüinos, pero te das cuenta de que no son cuando se hechan a volar. Gran camuflaje 😅.
The driver of this boat took care to position our vehicle in such a way that we could all see the islands from all angles. The people were also very respectful and did not make loud noises that could disturb these animals. It was a good gesture, as we avoided scaring the birds 😃.
El chofer de este barco se encargó de poner nuestro vehículo de forma tal que todos pudiéramos ver las islas de todos los ángulos. La gente también era muy respetuosa y no hacían grandes ruidos que pudieran perturbar a estos animales. Fue un buen gesto, ya que evitabamos espantar a las aves 😃.
On our tour we visited a few small rocky islands full of birds and sea lions. I had never seen so many of them gathered in the same place. I had seen colonies of sea lions in Mar del Plata, Buenos Aires, and also on the coast of Puerto Madryn, Chubut, but there were certainly not as many as here. It is logical that they choose these islands to rest, since there is nothing of movement as in the places mentioned above, more than a few boats that must pass a few times a day 😃.
En nuestro recorrido visitamos unas cuantas pequeñas islas rocosas llenas de aves y lobos marinos. Nunca había visto a tantos de ellos reunidos en el mismo lugar. Había visto colonias de lobos en Mar del Plata, Buenos Aires, y también en las costas de Puerto Madryn, Chubut, pero sin dudas no eran tantos como acá. Es lógico que elijan estas islas para descansar, ya que no hay nada de movimiento como en los lugares antes mencionados, más que algunos barcos que deben pasar unas pocas veces al día 😃.
A while later in our walk, we began to see what we were all waiting to see: the famous lighthouse at the end of the world. This small lighthouse is also located on one of the rocky islands inside the Beagle Channel and is probably the main icon of the city of Ushuaia. Here the marketing revolves a lot around the "end of the world", so all things are "end of the world" as is this little lighthouse 😅.
Un rato después dentro de nuestro paseo, empezamos a divisar lo que todos estábamos esperando ver: el famoso faro del fin del mundo. Este pequeño faro también está ubicado en una de las islas rocosas dentro del Canal de Beagle y es probablemente el ícono principal de la ciudad de Ushuaia. Acá el marketing gira mucho en torno al "fin del mundo", así que todas las cosas son "del fin del mundo" como lo es este pequeño faro 😅.
The name of the lighthouse is Les Éclaireurs and it has been in operation since 1920 with its 11 meters high and 3 meters in diameter. It is currently not possible to descend on its island, but this is not an impediment for the animals of the area, which also inhabit the surroundings of the lighthouse. It is very nice to see how these animals have taken over the whole place, making it even more attractive for tourists 😃.
El nombre del faro es Les Éclaireurs y funciona desde 1920 con sus 11 metros de alto y 3 metros de diámetro. Actualmente no se puede descender en su isla, pero esto no es ningún impedimento para los animales de la zona, quienes también habitan en los alrededores del faro. Es muy lindo ver como estos animales se adueñaron de todo este lugar, volviendolo aún más vistoso para los turistas 😃.
We still had quite a while of walking before we got to our last stop, but I didn't want to stop being on the deck of the boat even if it meant freezing. Amazingly, throughout this ride I still had cell phone signal, and at one point I was even connected to the network of our neighboring country Chile. This was when we passed through their town called Puerto Williams, another southern settlement that is also growing little by little. Technically, this town is further south than Ushuaia, so it would classify as the southernmost, but it still does not have enough people to be called a "city" 🙃.
Aún nos quedaba un buen rato de paseo antes de llegar hasta nuestra última parada, pero yo no quería dejar de estar en la cubierta del barco aunque eso significara estar congelándome. Increíblemente, en todo este recorrido aún tenía señal de celular, e incluso en un momento se me conectó la red de nuestro país vecino Chile. Esto fue cuando pasamos por su poblado llamado Puerto Williams, otro asentamiento austral que también esta creciendo poco a poco. Técnicamente, este pueblo está más al sur que Ushuaia por lo que clasificaría como el más austral, pero aún no posee la cantidad de personas suficientes para ser denominado como una "ciudad" 🙃.
After more than two hours of riding on top of the boat, we finally arrived at the last tourist spot we would see that afternoon. It was Martillo Island, where we could see the famous penguin colony. During the whole trip, the penguins had been quite shy so we did not come across any on the way, so the expectation to see them was very high ❤️.
Después de más de dos horas de paseo arriba del barco, finalmente llegamos al último punto turístico que veríamos esa tarde. Se trataba de la Isla Martillo, en donde podríamos ver la famosa colonia de pingüinos. Durante todo el viaje, los pingüinos habían estado bastante tímidos así que no nos cruzamos a ninguno en el camino, por lo que la expectativa por verlos era muy alta ❤️.
As I had never been this far south in my previous travels, I had not had the opportunity to see this type of animal. What surprised me the most is that there were so many, because although I expected to see a few, I did not imagine that there would be that many. We were all there, excited to see the penguins, just existing and not even a little bit disturbed by our presence. It was very nice to admire them in their natural habitat ❤️.
Como yo nunca había estado tan al sur en mis viajes anteriores, no había tenido la oportunidad de ver a este tipo de animales. Lo que más me sorprendió es que fueran tantos, porque aunque me esperaba ver a unos cuántos, no me imaginé que fueran esa gran cantidad. Todos estábamos ahí, emocionados por ver a los pingüinos, tan solo existiendo y ni siquiera un poco alterados por nuestra presencia. Fue muy lindo admirarlos en su hábitat natural ❤️.
Although when I researched this tour I had read that there was the possibility of going down to the island and walking among the penguins, at the time of my visit, this option was not available. Instead, we had to settle for watching them from the deck of the ship, but it wasn't that bad either. We stayed there for about half an hour looking at how beautiful they were, walking back and forth and swimming in those more than frozen waters 😅.
A pesar de que cuando investigué sobre este paseo había leído que existía la posibilidad de bajar a la isla y caminar entre los pingüinos, para el momento de mi visita, esta opción no estaba disponible. En lugar de eso, tuvimos que conformarnos con verlos desde la cubierta del barco, pero tampoco estuvo tan mal. Nos quedamos ahí como una media hora viendo lo lindos que eran, caminando de acá para allá y nadando en esas aguas más que congeladas 😅.
Once I was there on that ride it seemed to me that the price I paid for this unforgettable experience was completely worth it. I definitely couldn't have missed this sailing and I was glad I had enough resources to pay for it without any problems. These are the moments in which I encourage myself thinking "this is why I work, this is why I traveled here", and I convince that I deserve to live these beautiful and unique moments 💕.
Una vez que estuve ahí en ese paseo me terminó de parecer que el precio que pagué por esta experiencia inolvidable valió completamente la pena. Definitivamente, no podría haberme perdido esta navegación y me alegré de tener los recursos suficientes como para pagarla sin problemas. Estos son los momentos en los que me aliento a mi misma pensando "para esto trabajo, para esto viajé hasta acá", y me convenzo de que me merezco vivir estos lindos y únicos momentos 💕.
Our return to the small port from which we had set sail took just over an hour: a calm navigation with soft music, perfect for enjoying the landscape. I had already spent a lot of time outside and was kind of freezing, so I came all the way back into the heated interior of the boat. In addition, I took the opportunity to have a coffee that brought my soul back to my body 😂.
Nuestra vuelta al pequeño puerto del que habíamos zarpado fue de algo más de una hora: una navegación tranquila y con música suave, perfecta para disfrutar el paisaje. Yo ya había pasado mucho tiempo afuera y un poco me estaba congelando, así que volví todo el camino en el interior calefaccionado del barco. Además, aproveché para tomar un café que me devolvió el alma al cuerpo 😂.
This excursion and the End of the World Train are probably the two that you "can't miss" if you are visiting Ushuaia. I was glad to have been able to do both, as a change from so many kilometer-long treks in the mountains. The truth is that this city is full of beautiful things to see, and once there, it makes you want to do as many things as possible. Fortunately, I was able to do quite a few, so I have nothing to complain about 😅.
Esta excursión y la del Tren del Fin del Mundo son probablemente las dos que "no podés perderte" si estás de paseo en Ushuaia. Me alegré de haber podido hacer ambas, como para variar un poco de tantos trekkings kilométricos en las montañas. Lo cierto es que esta ciudad está llena de cosas hermosas para ver, y una vez ahí, te dan ganas de hacer la mayor cantidad de cosas posibles. Afortunadamente, yo pude hacer bastantes, así que no tengo de qué quejarme 😅.
