Hello, my fellow travelers, today I am pleased to invite you to discover a special place that treasures the history of the founding of Havana.
Walking through Old Havana is always a journey back in time, but this place exudes the city's beginnings: Arms Square, the oldest square in the Cuban capital. This site, a witness to five centuries of history, is of great colonial beauty where every stone, every cobblestone, and every building holds a fascinating story.
We can reach the square from Port Avenue, or from Obispo Street if we walk from the Capitol. Both routes offer a blend of colonial architecture, nature, and Cuban culture of unparalleled beauty.
In 1519, under the shade of a leafy ceiba tree, the first mass and the first town council of the town of San Cristobal of Havana were celebrated. Today, that moment is commemorated in The Templete, a neoclassical gem that houses three valuable oil paintings: one evokes that inaugural mass, another the first town council, and the third recreates the city's blessing ceremony. Every November 16th, Havana residents relive this tradition with a ceremony in front of the ceiba tree.
Walking through the plaza, we see to one side the imposing stone military architecture: the Castle of the Royal Force. This fortress, the oldest in the Americas, has watched over the bay since 1539. At the top of its tower stands the Giraldilla, a symbol of Havana.
Next to the castle, the Second Cabo Palace displays its solemn architecture, with limestone facades that speak of power and elegance.
Another colonial gem that delights us with its beauty is the Hotel Santa Isabel, which displays typical 19th-century architecture when it was owned by the Count of Santovenia.
But without a doubt the building that draws the most attention is the Palace of the Captains General, the former residence of the Spanish governors, which covers an entire block. Its majestic façade is a delight for the senses. And right in front of it, a sculpture that moves every Cuban: Eusebio Leal, the eternal historian of the city, cast in bronze by the sculptor José Villa Soberón as he greets with his characteristic gesture, as if he were still walking among us.
The center of the plaza is covered by a large park, where stone and metal benches invite you to rest under the shade of immense trees. Here, the statue of Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, the "Father of the Nation," reminds us of his struggle for independence from colonialism.
I like to sit in the park, while the air, scented with the nearby sea, refreshes me, and imagine the Havana residents of yesteryear strolling through these same places in their period clothes.
The Plaza de Armas is not just a tourist destination; it's an encounter with history, as evidenced by the diverse presence of museums in its colonial buildings.

Recorriendo la plaza más antigua en la Habana Vieja
Hola mis amigos viajeros, hoy me complace invitarlos a conocer un lugar especial que atesora la historia de la fundación de la Ciudad de La Habana.
Caminar por La Habana Vieja siempre es un viaje en el tiempo, pero en este lugar se respira los inicios de la ciudad: la Plaza de Armas, la plaza más antigua de la capital cubana. Este sitio, testigo de cinco siglos de historia, es de gran belleza colonial donde cada piedra, cada adoquín y cada edificio guarda una historia fascinante.
A la plaza podemos llegar desde la avenida del puerto, o desde la calle Obispo si caminamos desde el Capitolio, ambos recorridos nos brindan una mezcla de arquitectura colonial, naturaleza y cubanía de una belleza sinigual.
En 1519, bajo la sombra de una frondosa ceiba, se celebró la primera misa y el primer cabildo de la villa de San Cristóbal de La Habana. Hoy, ese momento se conmemora en El Templete, una joya de estilo neoclásico que custodia tres valiosos óleos: uno evoca aquella misa inaugural, otro el primer cabildo, y el tercero recrea la ceremonia de bendición de la ciudad. Cada 16 de noviembre, los habaneros reviven esta tradición con una ceremonia frente a la ceiba.
Al recorrer la plaza, vemos hacia un costado, la imponente arquitectura militar de piedra: el Castillo de la Real Fuerza. Esta fortaleza, la más antigua de América, vigila la bahía desde 1539. En lo más alto de su torre se alza La Giraldilla, símbolo de La Habana.
Junto al castillo, el Palacio del Segundo Cabo despliega su arquitectura solemne, con fachadas de piedra caliza que hablan de poder y elegancia.
Otra joya colonial que nos deleita con su belleza es el Hotel Santa Isabel, nos muestra una arquitectura típica del siglo XIX cuando era propiedad del Conde de Santovenia.
Pero sin duda el edificio que llama más la atención es el Palacio de los Capitanes Generales, antigua residencia de los gobernadores españoles que cubre toda una manzana. Su majestuosa fachada es un deleite para los sentidos. Y justo frente a él, una escultura que conmueve a cada cubano: Eusebio Leal, el eterno historiador de la ciudad, realizada en bronce por el escultor José Villa Soberón, mientras saluda con su característico gesto, como si aún caminara entre nosotros.
El centro de la plaza está cubierto por un gran parque, donde bancos de piedra y metal invitan a descansar bajo la sombra de inmensos árboles. Aquí, la estatua de Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, el "Padre de la Patria", nos recuerda su lucha por la independencia del colonialismo.
Me gusta sentarme en el parque, mientras el aire con aroma del mar cercano me refresca, e imaginar a los habaneros de antaño paseando por estos mismos lugares con sus ropas de la época.
La Plaza de Armas, no es solo un destino turístico; es un encuentro con la historia, la presencia de diversidad de museos en sus edificios coloniales así lo aseguran.
