Ya habíamos tenido una gran primera impresión de cómo era una parte de la superficie de este tepuy al hacer cumbre y caminar hasta el lugar donde se montó nuestro campamento, tal como les relaté en la publicación anterior, pero ahora íbamos a emprender la exploración por el Roraima, donde el asombro jamás se separó de nosotros.
It was midday and a bit cloudy, one of the first things our guide Marcos told us was to avoid talking loudly or shouting because that could provoke the anger of the spirits that inhabit this place and consequently they would send us fog and rain. According to the mythology of the Pemón ethnic group, the original inhabitants of this area, gods and magical beings live in the tepuis.
Era mediodía y estaba algo nublado, una de las primeras cosas que nos dijo nuestro guía Marcos fue que evitáramos hablar a alto volumen o gritar porque eso podía provocar la ira de los espíritus que habitan en este lugar y en consecuencia nos mandarían neblina y lluvia. Según la mitología de la etnia pemón, habitantes originarios de esta zona, en los tepuyes viven dioses y seres mágicos.
One of the remarkable things you see around here is the vegetation, among the black rocks of all sizes the strange plants that inhabit the isolated world of Roraima become more evident, many of them endemic, meaning that you only get them in this place on Earth.
Una de las cosas notables que ves por aquí es la vegetación, entre las piedras negras de todos los tamaños se hacen más evidentes las extrañas plantas que habitan el aislado mundo del Roraima, muchas de ellas endémicas, es decir que sólo las consigues en este lugar de la Tierra.
Existing on the top of the tepui is quite difficult for any living organism and for plants even more, as the rain is constant the scarce soil is usually washed away and they have little to hold on to, besides the rocks have almost no nutrients or minerals to contribute to their development, so most of them take years to grow, so it is very important to protect them, avoid stepping on them and even less to pull them up.
Existir en la cima del tepuy es bastante difícil para cualquier organismo vivo y para las plantas aún más, como la lluvia es constante el escaso suelo suele ser arrastrado y tienen poco a qué aferrarse, además las rocas no tienen casi nutrientes ni minerales para aportar a su desarrollo, por eso la mayoría tarda años en crecer, así que es muy importante protegerlas, evitar pisarlas y menos arrancarlas.
Despite the extreme conditions there is a variety of plants in Roraima, many are grouped together as in islands, forming small and picturesque gardens.

The guide told us that we should watch where we were stepping because there is a tiny inhabitant over there that camouflages perfectly with the black stones.
El guía nos dijo que debíamos ver dónde pisábamos porque hay un habitante diminuto por allí que se camufla perfectamente con las piedras negras.
It's Roraima's rugosa toad or Oreophrynella quelchii. According to scientists, these animals are very ancient. Of diurnal habits, their dark color protects them from the intense rays of the sun, they live among the stones and vegetation and can neither jump nor swim but if they are threatened they play dead, they shrink like little balls.
Es el sapito rugoso del Roraima u Oreophrynella quelchii. Estos animales según los científicos, son muy antiguos. De hábitos diurnos, su oscuro color los protege de los intensos rayos del sol, viven entre las piedras y la vegetación y no pueden saltar ni nadar pero si se ven amenazados se hacen los muertos, se encogen como bolitas.
After having had the pleasure of getting to know it, we arrived at the "Valley of the Crystals", located at the headwaters of the Arabopó River, an amazing place full of quartz of all sizes everywhere.
Después de haber tenido el placer de conocerlo llegamos al “Valle de los Cristales”, ubicado en las cabeceras del río Arabopó, un lugar alucinante lleno de cuarzos de todos los tamaños por todas partes.
The guide tells us that no one should take any crystal, something logical because if each person who comes takes one, in a short time there would be nothing left, of course there are always people who don't respect.
El guía nos dice que nadie debe llevarse ningún cristal, algo lógico porque si cada persona que viene se lleva uno, en poco tiempo no quedaría nada, claro que siempre hay gente que no respeta.
I had no idea such a place existed, Roraima was taking me beyond my imagination.
No tenía idea de que un lugar así existía, el Roraima me estaba llevando más allá de mi imaginación.
Our route continued in cloudy and somewhat windy weather to the second stop of the day.
Nuestra ruta continuó con un clima nublado y algo de viento hacia la segunda parada del día.
In about half an hour, after passing through some large stones that looked like a labyrinth, we arrived at a viewpoint, a light drizzle began to fall.
Como en media hora, luego de pasar entre unas grandes piedras que parecían un laberinto llegamos a un mirador, una leve llovizna comenzó a caer.
This viewpoint is called "The Abyss" and as soon as you approach the edge you see the evergreen savannah unfolding at the foot of the tepui.
A este mirador le dicen "El Abismo" y apenas te acercas al borde ves la sabana siempreverde desplegada a los pies del tepuy.
Fortunately it was quite clear and we were able to see a spectacular panoramic view, including a few walls or cliffs of Roraima, from here they look imposing.
Afortunadamente estaba bastante despejado y pudimos mirar una espectacular panorámica, incluyendo unas cuantas paredes o acantilados del Roraima, desde acá lucen imponentes.
It was time to return to our camp, which we reached after 5:00 pm.
Era momento de regresar a nuestro campamento, al cual llegamos después de las 5:00 de la tarde.
I was excited because it was our first night camping on the tepui, we had dinner and stayed a while talking.
Yo estaba emocionada porque era nuestra primera noche de acampada en el tepuy, cenamos y nos quedamos un rato conversando.
The temperature was dropping, we had already been told that it would be cold at dusk, it could reach about 5 ºC. As all the tents didn't fit under the rock that formed the cavern of the "hotel", some of them, including mine, were left outside the natural roof. My tent mate and I didn't give it much importance but that night it rained a lot and apart from the noise of the drops falling on the tent, a trickle of water seeped through one of the corners, luckily I had a plastic bag and I put it there to stop the liquid, we were already joking that a river was going to form and drag us out of the tepui.
La temperatura estaba bajando, ya nos habían dicho que al oscurecer hacía frío, podía llegar a unos 5 ºC. Como todas las carpas no cabían debajo de la roca que formaba la caverna del “hotel”, algunas de ellas, entre las que estaba la mía, quedaron por fuera de ese techo natural. Mi compañero de carpa y yo no le dimos mucha importancia pero esa noche cayó un palo de agua, es decir, llovió muchísimo y aparte del ruido de las gotas cayendo sobre la carpa, un hilito de agua se coló por una de las esquinas, menos mal que tenía una bolsa plástica y la puse allí para frenar el líquido, ya estábamos bromeando con que se iba a formar un río y nos iba a arrastrar fuera del tepui.
Day 4 / Día 4
Just like the previous nights of this excursion, I almost didn't sleep, the opposite of my tent mate haha, so I was not lazy to get up at 5:00 in the morning to go to contemplate the sunrise from a place that was across the cave where we had the camp. Several people in the group had agreed on this the night before and it was a great idea, see these colors and the brightness that together with the humidity gave the black rocks:
Tal como las noches anteriores de esta excursión, casi no dormí, todo lo contrario a mi compañero de carpa jaja, así que no me dio pereza levantarme a las 5:00 de la mañana para ir a contemplar el amanecer desde un lugar que estaba al atravesar la cueva donde teníamos el campamento. Esto lo habíamos acordado varias personas del grupo la noche anterior y fue una idea genial, vean estos colores y el brillo que junto a la humedad le daban a las rocas negras:
Our second day at the top of Roraima included several places so we left camp early in the morning. The guide told us that breakfast would be at our first stop. Along the way we had more samples of the particular vegetation that grows here, these bushes are called Bonnetia roraimae.
Nuestro segundo día en la cima del Roraima incluía varios lugares así que dejamos el campamento bien temprano. El guía nos dijo que el desayuno sería en nuestra primera parada. Por el camino tuvimos más muestras de la particular vegetación que crece acá, estos arbustos se llaman Bonnetia roraimae.
And we walked again on the pink sand that can be found in many areas of the tepui, in this stretch we passed small streams.
Y volvimos a caminar sobre la arena rosada que podemos encontrar en muchas áreas del tepuy, en este tramo pasaban pequeños riachuelos.
After half an hour we arrive at the viewpoint known as "The Window to Kukenán", where beauty and danger meet.
Tras una media hora llegamos al mirador conocido como "La Ventana a Kukenán", donde la belleza y el peligro se juntan.
Kukenán is another plateau type mountain that is in front, is like the sister tepuy of Roraima but is less high (2,680 m) and is smaller in area (21.85 km2). It's surrounded by a halo of mystery because it is more difficult to access and few people climb it. Also, according to the mythology of the Pemón ethnic group, who also know it as Matawi-tepuy, which means "if you climb it, you die", it is a place where evil spirits inhabit.
El Kukenán es otra montaña tipo meseta que está al frente, es como el tepuy hermano del Roraima pero tiene menos altura (2.680 m) y es más pequeño en superficie (21,85 Km2). Lo envuelve un halo de misterio porque por ser de más difícil acceso poca gente lo sube, además según la mitología de la etnia pemón, que también lo conocen como Matawi-tepuy, que significa “si lo subes, mueres”, es un sitio donde habitan espíritus malignos.
We were told that several years ago, I think in 1998, a person disappeared there and his body was never found, no trace was left and since then the indigenous community restricts the permissions to climb it, they don't like people going there. Even so, I confess that since I saw it I have been attracted to it and I hope one day to be able to climb it. From its summit falls the Kukenán waterfall, with its approximately 670 meters it is among the highest in the world. Here are some images from and at "The Window":
Nos dijeron que hace varios años, creo que en 1998, una persona desapareció allí y jamás encontraron su cuerpo, no quedó rastro y desde entonces la comunidad indígena restringe los permisos para subirlo, no les gusta que vaya gente allí. Aún así confieso que desde que lo vi me atrajo y espero algún día poder subirlo. Desde su cima cae el salto Kukenán, con sus aproximadamente 670 metros está entre los más altos del mundo. While we were looking around us in ecstasy and taking picture after picture near the cliff, the guys from the agency prepared breakfast for us, that was a high altitude breakfast, wasn't it? We even forgot about the vertigo.
Mientras mirábamos extasiados a nuestro alrededor y tomábamos foto tras foto cerca del precipicio, los chicos de la agencia nos prepararon el desayuno, ese sí que fue un desayuno de altura, ¿o no? Hasta nos olvidamos del vértigo.
Not only we were eating around here, we happened to come across the famous Heliamphora nutans, a carnivorous plant endemic to the tepuis. Its leaves are like jars, there they collect rainwater and thus attract the insects with which they feed.
No sólo nosotros estábamos comiendo por aquí, resulta que nos topamos con la famosa Heliamphora nutans, una planta carnívora endémica de los tepuyes. Sus hojas son como jarras, allí recolectan agua de lluvia y así atraen a los insectos con los que se alimentan.
We walked a little further and saw that there are a lot of waterfalls falling from the walls of the tepui, some are not permanent but feed important rivers of Venezuela such as the Orinoco, Amazon and Esequibo, so one of the ways as the indigenous people call the Roraima is "the mother of all waters".
Caminamos un poco más allá y vimos que hay una gran cantidad de saltos cayendo de las paredes del tepuy, algunos no son permanentes pero nutren importantes ríos de Venezuela como el Orinoco, el Amazonas y el Esequibo, por eso una de las maneras como los indígenas llaman al Roraima es “la madre de todas las aguas”.
We leave "The Window to Kukenán" to go to another unusual place, here the surprises don't stop. I present to you the "Jacuzzis", not so deep wells whose bottom is covered with quartz crystals.
Dejamos "La Ventana a Kukenán" para dirigirnos a otro insólito lugar, aquí las sorpresas no paran. Les presento los "Jacuzzis", unos pozos no tan hondos cuyo fondo está recubierto con cristales de cuarzo.
Several people in my group took a dip in these natural pools, I dipped my feet in but the water was too cold so I didn't swim.
Varias personas de mi grupo se dieron un chapuzón en estas piscinas naturales, yo sumergí los pies pero el agua estaba demasiado fría así que no me bañé.
The weather was cloudy and yet the crystals were shining, imagine how they must look in bright sunshine.
El clima estaba nublado y sin embargo los cristales brillaban, imagínense cómo deben verse con sol radiante.
We went back to camp for lunch and then we went to see another crazy place.
Regresamos al campamento para almorzar y luego nos fuimos a conocer otro lugar bien loco.
These are cracks, the shapes and sizes of these openings between the stones, as in different layers, are so extravagant, don't you think?
Se trata de unas grietas, las formas y tamaños de estas aberturas entre las piedras, como en distintas capas, son tan extravagantes, ¿no creen?
Carefully you can jump from stone to stone and see some of the shafts that have formed below.
Con cuidado puedes dar saltos para ir de piedra en piedra y ver algunos pozos que se han formado abajo.
In many parts you couldn't see the bottom, who knows how far the holes went, a lot of adrenaline around here.
En muchas partes no se veía el fondo, quien sabe hasta dónde llegaban los huecos, mucha adrenalina por aquí.
We returned to the camp because we still had one more place to go, we couldn't miss the climb to the "Maverick", the highest point of Roraima with 2,810 meters. It was in front of our "hotel" and it took us about half an hour to get to the top, no matter that it was raining and our boots got muddy.
Volvimos al campamento porque aún nos faltaba un lugar más, no podíamos dejar de subir al “Maverick”, el punto más alto del Roraima con 2.810 metros. Estaba frente a nuestro “hotel” y nos llevó como media hora llegar a la cima, no importó que estuviera lloviendo y se nos embarraran las botas.
Due to the bad weather we couldn't see the savannah from there, but we had an incredible view of our camp, we could see the tents and some people among the huge rock.
Debido al mal tiempo no pudimos ver desde allí la sabana, pero tuvimos una increíble vista de nuestro campamento, se veían las carpas y algunas personas entre la enorme roca.
There are many other sites that can be visited here, such as the Triple Point, Gladys Lake or La Proa (The Prow), but for that you have to stay more days or come back another time hehe. The next day we had to go down from the tepui, so in the night we prepared our backpacks to leave early.
Hay muchos otros sitios que se pueden visitar aquí, como el Punto Triple, el Lago Gladys o La Proa, pero para eso hay que quedarse más días o volver en otra oportunidad jeje. Al día siguiente teníamos que bajar del tepuy por lo que en la noche preparamos nuestras mochilas para salir temprano.
Day 5 / Día 5
It dawned drizzling, we had breakfast and started our return. On this day we had to pass through Base Camp and continue to the Tök River Camp, a 12 km hike, where we were going to spend the night, just as we did the first day we started this adventure.
Amaneció lloviznando, desayunamos y comenzamos el regreso. En este día teníamos que pasar por el Campamento Base y seguir hasta el Campamento Río Tök, una caminata de unos 12 Km, allí íbamos a pasar la noche, tal como lo hicimos el primer día que iniciamos esta aventura.
We arrived in the afternoon, quite sweaty, so before continuing to the camp area we jumped into the river to cool off, it seems that this spider was also hot.
Llegamos en la tarde, bastante sudados, por lo que antes de continuar hasta la zona del campamento nos metimos de una vez en el río para refrescarnos, parece que esta araña también tenía calor.
Our last afternoon and evening in these parts we had a great time, after dinner we stayed up late talking and there was even live music, someone from another group had a guitar and played several tunes.
Nuestra última tarde y noche por estos lados la pasamos muy bien, luego de cenar nos quedamos hasta tarde conversando y hasta música en vivo hubo, alguien de otro grupo tenía una guitarra y tocó varias melodías.
Day 6 / Día 6
The morning dawned clear, only a few clouds covered the summit of Kukenán.
La mañana amaneció despejada, sólo unas pocas nubes cubrían la cima del Kukenán.
We had to return to Paraitepui, the indigenous community where this journey begins, despite the heat during the more or less 14 km, I enjoyed the walk, we were all very happy and smiling, having been in the oldest place on the planet left us the spirit full of an inexplicable, powerful energy.
Debíamos regresar a Paraitepui, la comunidad indígena donde se inicia esta travesía, a pesar del calor durante los más o menos 14 Km, disfruté la caminata, todos andábamos muy felices y sonrientes, haber estado en el lugar más antiguo del planeta nos dejó el espíritu lleno de una energía inexplicable, poderosa.
There, the Toyota trucks were waiting for us to return to Santa Elena de Uairén, where everyone would then go their own way.
Allí nos esperaban las camionetas Toyota para regresar a Santa Elena de Uairén, donde luego cada quien tomaría su rumbo.
