When a Detour Becomes the Destination
Eigentlich wollten wir nach Hause. Doch die Autobahn war dicht, die Bundesstraße ein Flickenteppich aus Baustellen. Das Navi schien irgendwann selbst zu kapitulieren – immer neue Routen, immer neue Verzögerungen. Wir schauten uns an: Wollen wir uns das wirklich antun? Die Antwort war klar. Nein. Nicht heute. Wir machten den Van frei von Erwartungen, suchten einen nahegelegenen Stellplatz und landeten in Eichstätt, mitten im Naturpark Altmühltal. Es war keine geplante Etappe. Aber wie wir schon oft feststellten: Es sind gerade diese ungeplanten Orte, die uns am meisten geben.
We were actually on our way home. But the autobahn was jammed, and the federal roads were a patchwork of construction zones. Eventually, even the GPS seemed to give up — constantly recalculating, suggesting new delays. We looked at each other: Do we really want to go through with this? The answer was clear. No. Not today. We freed the van from any expectations, searched for a nearby campsite and ended up in Eichstätt, right in the heart of the Altmühl Valley Nature Park. It wasn’t part of our plan. But as we’ve come to learn: it’s often the unplanned places that stay with us the longest.

Der Stellplatz lag am Rand eines Großparkplatzes – doch der erste Eindruck täuschte. Er war liebevoll angelegt, abgetrennt vom Trubel, eingebettet ins Grün. Bäume säumten die Parzellen. Vögel sangen, irgendwo raschelte ein Igel im Unterholz. Es war ruhig, friedlich – ein kleiner Rückzugsort, der sich viel größer anfühlte, als er war. Wir schoben die Fenster auf, hörten das leise Rauschen des Windes in den Zweigen und atmeten durch. Ich liebe diese Stellplätze, die mehr sind als nur ein funktionaler Ort. Die ein Gefühl von Ankommen vermitteln, selbst wenn man nur für eine Nacht bleibt.
The site was located on the edge of a large parking lot — but first impressions can be deceiving. It was thoughtfully laid out, set apart from the hustle, nestled in greenery. Trees lined the plots. Birds sang, and somewhere in the underbrush, a hedgehog rustled. It was quiet, peaceful — a small sanctuary that felt much bigger than it actually was. We slid open the windows, listened to the gentle rustling of leaves in the wind, and exhaled. I love these kinds of campsites — more than just practical stops. They offer a sense of arrival, even if you only stay for a single night.

Altmühl Valley Nature Park – A Quiet Gem
Eichstätt liegt eingebettet in eine Landschaft, die sich nicht aufdrängt und gerade deshalb beeindruckt. Der Naturpark Altmühltal gehört zu den größten seiner Art in Deutschland. Über 3.000 Quadratkilometer voller Jurafelsen, Flusstäler, Wacholderheiden und Wälder, die nicht laut sein müssen, um zu wirken. Hier ist alles weich, fließend, freundlich. Helle Felswände ragen wie Skulpturen aus den Hügeln, Wiesen breiten sich in Terrassen aus, dazwischen schlängelt sich die Altmühl. Der Fluss ist ruhig, fast bedächtig – als wüsste er um die Kraft der Langsamkeit. Ich hatte mir früher oft vorgestellt, hier einmal eine Kanutour zu machen. Immer kam etwas dazwischen. Heute standen wir wenigstens am Ufer, sahen dem Wasser zu, wie es lautlos weiterzog. Und ich dachte: Vielleicht reicht das schon. Vielleicht ist das genug – in diesem Moment.
Eichstätt sits gently within a landscape that doesn’t push itself into the spotlight and that’s exactly what makes it so moving. The Altmühl Valley Nature Park is one of the largest of its kind in Germany. Over 1,200 square miles of Jurassic cliffs, river valleys, juniper heaths, and forests that don’t need to be loud to make an impact. Everything here feels soft, flowing, kind. Pale limestone formations rise like sculptures from the hills. Meadows unfold in terraces, and the Altmühl river meanders calmly in between. The river moves slowly, almost deliberately — as if it understands the strength in taking one’s time. I had often imagined going on a canoe trip here. But something always got in the way. Today, at least, we stood on the riverbank, watching the water drift by without a sound. And I thought: Maybe this is already enough. Maybe this moment is all it needs to be.

Wir folgten dem Flusslauf in Richtung Innenstadt. Eichstätt empfing uns mit gepflegten Fassaden und einer Atmosphäre, die weder hektisch noch verschlafen war.

Jahrhundert, als das erste Collegium hier gegründet wurde. Der Campus wirkt wie eine lebendige Brücke zwischen Tradition und Gegenwart. Wir liefen durch barocke Innenhöfe, vorbei an Lesesälen mit hohen Fenstern und Studierenden, die in kleinen Gruppen diskutierten oder allein über Skripten brüteten. Ich stellte mir vor, wie es ist, in dieser Kulisse zu lernen. Zwischen Kirchtürmen und Naturpark, mit Raum für Tiefe, für Fragen, für Stille. Orte wie dieser laden ein, nicht nur Wissen aufzunehmen – sondern auch zu verstehen.

Wir kamen am Dom vorbei – eine beeindruckende Hallenkirche, gegründet im 8. Jahrhundert und später in hoch- und spätgotischen Formen erweitert. Eichstätt war einst ein religiöses Zentrum, und diese Vergangenheit ist hier überall spürbar. Doch nichts wirkt hier museal oder fern. Es ist, als ob die Stadt ihre Geschichte nicht ausstellt, sondern lebt – in kleinen Details, in der Art, wie man sich hier bewegt, spricht, verweilt.
We passed the cathedral — an impressive hall church, founded in the 8th century and expanded over time in High and Late Gothic styles. Eichstätt was once a religious center, and that legacy still lingers in the air. But nothing here feels like a museum. It’s as if the city doesn’t exhibit its history — It lives it. In the little details, in how people move, speak, pause.

🍽️ Flammkuchen, Bier und Begegnung

Zum Abschluss des Tages kehrten wir in eine kleine Studentenkneipe ein. Holzvertäfelung, Kerzen auf den Tischen, ein leichtes Stimmengewirr. Wir bestellten Flammkuchen mit Käse, Zwiebeln und Speck, dazu ein dunkles Bier aus der Region. Die Bedienung war offen, herzlich. Sie studierte Theologie und erzählte uns von ihrem Studienalltag, von Eichstätt im Winter, von stillen Spaziergängen im Frühnebel. Wir sprachen über das Unterwegssein, über das Ankommen, über den Wert von Orten, die nicht laut sind – und doch bleiben.
At the end of the day, we stopped at a small student pub. Wood-paneled walls, candles on the tables, soft voices buzzing in the background. We ordered Flammkuchen with cheese, onions, and bacon—paired with a dark local beer. The waitress was warm and open. She studied theology and told us about her daily life, about Eichstätt in winter, about silent walks through early morning fog. We talked about traveling, about arriving, and about the value of places that don’t scream for attention — but still find a way to stay with you.

Zurück am Van, war es dunkel geworden. Nur das leise Flattern der Blätter war zu hören, gelegentlich ein Auto in der Ferne. Wir lagen mit offenen Fenstern, sahen in den Baumkronen die Sterne blinken. Ich dachte an den Fluss, an den Dom, an die ruhige Stimme der Studentin. Daran, wie schnell wir sonst durch Orte hindurchfahren – ohne je wirklich da zu sein. Eichstätt hatte uns eingeladen, anzuhalten. Hinzuschauen. Zu lauschen.
Back at the van, night had fallen. Only the soft flutter of leaves and the occasional car in the distance broke the silence. We lay with the windows open, stars blinking between the treetops. I thought about the river, the cathedral, the student’s quiet voice. About how quickly we often pass through places — without ever really being there. Eichstätt had invited us to pause. To look more closely. To listen.

Eichstätt war nicht unser Ziel. Und gerade deshalb war es genau richtig. Ein ungeplanter Halt, der blieb. Eine Stadt, die zeigt, dass Tiefe nichts mit Größe zu tun hat. Manchmal braucht es keinen großen Plan – nur einen Moment der Offenheit. Und einen Ort, der genau dann sagt: Bleib ruhig noch ein wenig.
Eichstätt wasn’t our destination. And maybe that’s exactly why it was the right place to be. An unplanned stop that turned into something lasting. A city that proves: depth doesn’t depend on size. Sometimes you don’t need a grand plan — just a moment of openness. And a place that simply says: Stay a while longer.

Wohnmobilstellplatz Eichstätt

Der gebührenpflichtige Stellplatz für bis zu 70 Wohnmobile liegt am Ortsrand von Eichstätt, zwischen der Altmühl und einem Großparkplatz, jedoch auf einem separat ausgewiesenen, grünen Areal. Der Platz ist überwiegend eben, teils schattig und besteht aus Schotterrasen und Wiesenflächen. Ein Rad- und Wanderweg führt direkt am Stellplatz vorbei. Die historische Altstadt ist in etwa 15 Minuten bequem zu Fuß erreichbar. Vor Ort gibt es einen Brötchenservice sowie die Möglichkeit zur Versorgung mit Frischwasser und Strom. Auch die Entsorgung von Grauwasser und Chemie-Toiletten ist möglich. WC und Duschen stehen zur Verfügung, wobei diese in der Winterzeit geschlossen sind – aktuelle Hinweise finden sich auf der Website. Hunde sind auf dem Platz erlaubt, ebenso ist das Grillen gestattet. Die Übernachtung kostet 14 Euro pro Nacht und wird über einen Parkscheinautomaten bezahlt. Strom wird mit 80 Cent pro Kilowattstunde berechnet, Frischwasser kostet 1 Euro pro 100 Liter, die Dusche 50 Cent.

Toilets and showers are also available, although they are closed during the winter months – please check the official website for seasonal updates. Dogs are welcome, and barbecuing is permitted. The overnight fee is €14, payable at a ticket machine. Electricity is charged at €0.50 per kWh, fresh water at €1 per 100 liters, and showers cost €0.50 per use.
