“Eat your breakfast. It is good for you!”
I can still so clearly hear my mom saying this and if mom tells you something you know not to query her. Mom knows what is best!
It is only when I left home that I realized how important breakfast indeed is. Breakfast gives me the "whooma" I need to start my day.
South Africa and breakfast time!
Over the years South Africans adopted the “Western” way of eating breakfast namely bacon and eggs or a good cheese toastie. During the week it is also easy to grab a box of cereals, add milk, and “Bob's your uncle" away you go off to school or work.
On the traditional side there are two items which are LOVED by South Africans and that is pap and rusks.
Pap
Cooked maize meal, similar to porridge or grits. It is eaten with butter, sugar, and milk.
Rusk
Made from wheat flour, baked, and then dried out in the oven. It is eaten by dunking it in a cup of tea of coffee.
Breakfast time for South African is between 06 – 09 am.
If we eat breakfast after this time we call it “brunch”. It is then also time to add so much more to your breakfast like mushrooms, cheese sausages, and waffles or flapjacks.
Me and breakfast time!
“Eier in a Nessie” as we call it in my home language, Afrikaans. Translate it means “egg in a nest.” It is by far my favorite breakfast.
It is not only me who loves it but also my family. It tastes good, it is easy and quick to make, and it is also cost-effective.
Ingredients needed:
• 1 slice of bread
• Butter or margarine
• 1 egg
Making it is as easy as reading a comic strip.
I like decorating the top of the “egg in a nest” with a happy smiley face. When my grandchildren visit I will put tomato sauce in a dish for them and then allow them to decorate the nest themselves.
My favorite breakfast is then also served with juice or fresh fruit.
Breakfast is served!
There is only one person who makes breakfast in our household and that is me. If I had to wait for hubby we will wait forever.
When my daughter visits I still have to make breakfast. “Mom, you make the best breakfast ever!” Have you heard that one before?
When next you are in the area make sure you stop at us between 07-08 am as that is when breakfast is served. Oh yah, on weekends we sleep late. Best to make it between 08-09 am.
