Nominada a siete premios de la Academia
Among the ten films nominated for the Oscar for Best Picture there are some that unquestionably had to be there. Oppenheimer, Killers of the Flower Moon, Anatomy of a Fall, Poor Things, no one doubts that they are among the best films of the year, but there are perhaps a couple for which - according to public opinion - this nomination seems excessive. And it is curious that precisely one of the most criticized has obtained seven nominations for the Academy Awards.
Entre las diez películas nominadas al Oscar como Mejor Película hay algunas que indiscutiblemente tenían que estar. Oppenheimer, Killers of the Flower Moon, Anatomy of a Fall, Poor Things, nadie duda de que están entre las mejores películas del año, pero hay tal vez un par para las que - de acuerdo a la opinión pública - esta nominación parece excesiva. Y es curioso que precisamente una de las más criticadas haya obtenido siete nominaciones a los premios de la academia.
This is Maestro, a film distributed by Netflix, directed, starring and co-written by Bradley Cooper, which tells the story of the American composer Leonard Bernstein, especially focusing on his love relationship with his wife, Felicia Montealegre. I am not a great connoisseur of contemporary classical music, nor of many orchestra conductors or related topics, but Bernstein's name seems familiar to me because he composed the soundtrack of some films from the fifties, I know that he conducted the New York Philharmonic and I have read comments by Haruki Murakami on some of Bernstein's pieces and performances. However, I did not know that he had been the first world-famous American conductor and that he was almost a celebrity. Having that as a starting point, everything seemed to indicate that it would be a very American biopic about one of its heroes, but the film was not liked. Neither to critics nor to the general public, so how come it has seven Oscar nominations? How can such a contradictory case occur? I think the technical nominations are deserved in this case. Best photography, Best makeup and hair and Best sound, I can understand them; and although Cooper's performance as Bernstein may seem pretentious and aimed precisely at getting nominations like this, I think it's pretty good. As for Carey Mulligan as Felicia, she was wonderful. One of the best actresses of her generation, without a doubt, it's a shame that she has such complex competition in her category, but I would say that Mulligan was the best thing in the film.
Se trata de Maestro, una película distribuida por Netflix, dirigida, protagonizada y co escrita por Bradley Cooper, en donde se cuenta la historia del compositor estadounidense Leonard Bernstein, sobre todo centrándose en su relación amorosa con la que fue su esposa, Felicia Montealegre. No soy un gran conocedor de música clásica contemporánea, ni de muchos directores de orquesta o temas afines, pero el nombre de Bernstein se me hace familiar porque compuso la banda sonora de algunas películas de los años cincuenta, sé que dirigió a la filarmónica de Nueva York y he leído comentarios de Haruki Murakami sobre algunas piezas e interpretaciones de Bernstein. Sin embargo, no sabía que había sido el primer director de orquesta norteamericano mundialmente famoso y que fue casi una celebridad. Teniendo eso como punto de partida, todo parecía señalar que se trataría de una biopic muy americana sobre uno de sus héroes, pero la película no gustó. Ni a la crítica ni al público en general, entonces ¿cómo es que tiene siete nominaciones a los Oscar? ¿cómo puede darse un caso tan contradictorio? Creo que las nominaciones técnicas son merecidas en este caso. Mejor fotografía, Mejor maquillaje y peluquería y Mejor sonido, las puedo entender; y aunque la interpretación de Cooper como Bernstein pueda parecer pretenciosa y apuntar precisamente a obtener nominaciones como esta, creo que está bastante bien. En cuanto a Carey Mulligan como Felicia, estuvo maravillosa. De las mejores actrices de su generación, sin duda, lástima que tenga una competencia tan compleja en su categoría, pero diría que Mulligan fue lo mejor de la película.
So that's it, I can understand it, but Best Original Screenplay? This film competes in that category against Anatomy of a Fall, The Holdovers and Past Lives (I haven't seen the other nominee, May December), wonderfully well-written stories, far above the script of Maestro in my way to see things. Because if there is a weak point in the film, it's precisely the way in which it's written and in which the story develops.
Así que hasta allí, lo puedo entender, pero ¿Mejor guión original? Esta película compite en esa categoría contra Anatomy of a Fall, The Holdovers y Past Lives (no he visto la otra nominada, May December), historias maravillosamente bien escritas, muy por encima del guión de Maestro a mi manera de ver las cosas. Porque si hay un punto flojo en la película, es precisamente la forma en que está escrita y en que se desarrolla la historia.
The film begins with an interview with Bernstein and then allows itself to go back in time, to his beginnings as a director and composer and to the time he met Felicia. The relationship, at times idyllic, at times stormy, between the two, will be (or will try to be) the guiding thread of the plot, its backbone. Then we will see their conflicts, Bernstein's egomania, his extramarital relationships with young men, some of his family and a couple of scenes in which he's seen directing (and in which the best of Cooper as Bernstein is seen). Now, I think that many scenes and some of the photography try more to be an exhibition of resources than narrative needs. For example, in Oppenheimer, Nolan uses black and white for the protagonist's first-person scenes and color photography for third-party narrations. That is, there's an intention and a need to use two different photographs. But in Maestro, the black and white parts and the color parts almost seem to come from different movies. The first, focused on telling the past, tries to be more artistic, make transitions typical of classic Hollywood and try different approaches, sequences and shots that don't seem to serve the plot but rather the director's ego. Then, the color parts, the present and last years of the plot, are somewhat more restrained, more normal and more similar to the style used by Cooper in A Star is Born. I don't know how to say it exactly, but the story doesn't flow, it seems interrupted, made up of scraps, and the characters didn't generate emotions, empathy, sympathy, or rejection in me (perhaps the only exception were some of Felicia's sequences) as if it happened to me with Tár, for example, and it was a fictional character. So, if the narrative of a film doesn't emotionally involve or challenge the viewer, can it be considered a good script?
La cinta arranca con una entrevista a Bernstein y luego se permite ir al pasado, a sus inicios como director y compositor y a la época en que conoció a Felicia. La relación, a ratos idílica, a ratos tormentosa, entre ambos, será (o intentará ser) el hilo conductor de la trama, su columna vertebral. Luego veremos sus conflictos, la egolatría de Bernstein, sus relaciones extra maritales con hombres jóvenes, algo de su familia y un par de escenas en las que se lo ve dirigiendo (y en lo que se ve lo mejor de Cooper como Bernstein). Ahora bien, creo que muchas escenas y algo de la fotografía, intentan más ser una exhibición de recursos que necesidades narrativas. Por ejemplo, en Oppenheimer, Nolan utiliza el blanco y negro para las escenas en primera persona del protagonista y la fotografía a color para las narraciones de terceros. Es decir, hay una intención y una necesidad de emplear dos fotografías distintas. Pero en Maestro, las partes en blanco y negro y las de color casi parecen provenir de películas distintas. La primera, centrada en contar el pasado, intenta ser más artística, hacer transiciones propias del hollywood clásico y prueba diferentes enfoques, secuencias y tomas que no parecen estar al servicio de la trama sino del ego del director. Luego, las partes a color, el presente y últimos años de la trama, es algo más comedida, más normal y más parecido al estilo empleado por Cooper en A Star is Born. No sé cómo decirlo con exactitud, pero la historia no fluye, parece interrumpida, armada de retazos y los personajes no me generaron emociones, ni empatía, ni simpatía, ni rechazo (acaso la única excepción sean algunas secuencias de Felicia) como si me sucedió con Tár, por ejemplo y eso que se trataba de un personaje ficticio. Entonces, si la narrativa de una película no involucra emocionalmente ni interpela al espectador, ¿se puede hablar de un buen guión?
Finally, if a film lacks a good script, does it deserve to be nominated for Best Picture? For me the script is the heart of a story. The rest are additions and can enhance or destroy it, but without a good script there is no good movie. Let us remember that in this category between five and ten films can be nominated, but there don't necessarily have to be ten. I would have left it at nine candidates, I feel that all the others deserve to be there and Maestro doesn't, because yes, Cooper knows how to direct, he knows how to act and makeup helps him look different and try new things, but I think that he tried too hard and there are resources and ideas that didn't work well. I don't want to take away his merits, his directorial debut in A Star Is Born is a great debut and for some reason in the credits of Maestro Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg and Todd Phillip appear as producers along with Bradley Cooper himself, he undoubtedly has great talent and is still developing it, I think he's called to achieve great things (maybe he should try directing other actors without participating in the story), but I think the final result of this film is a little disappointing. I don't know if I would call it a complete failure, but perhaps a creative mistake or a failed attempt at some ideas that, although are risky, are not necessarily good ideas. Finalmente, si una película carece de un buen guión, ¿merece estar nominada a Mejor Película? Para mí el guión es el corazón de una historia. Lo demás son agregados y pueden potenciarlo o destruirlo, pero sin un buen guión no hay una buena película. Recordemos que en esa categoría pueden nominarse entre cinco y diez películas, pero no tienen que ser diez obligatoriamente. Yo lo habría dejado en nueve candidatas, siento que todas las demás merecen estar allí y Maestro no, porque sí, Cooper sabe dirigir, sabe actuar y el maquillaje lo ayuda a lucir diferente y a intentar cosas nuevas, pero creo que se esforzó demasiado y hay recursos e ideas que no funcionaron bien. No quiero restarle méritos, su debut como director en A Star Is Born es un gran debut y por algo en los créditos de Maestro aparecen como productores Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg y Todd Phillip junto al mismo Bradley Cooper., quien sin duda tene un gran talento y aún lo está desarrollado, creo que está llamado para lograr grandes cosas (quizás deba probar dirigir a otros actores sin participar de la historia), pero creo el resultado final de esta película es un poco decepcionante. No sé si lo llamaría un completo fracaso, pero quizás sí un desacierto creativo o un intento fallido de algunas ideas que no por arriesgadas son necesariamente buenas ideas, ¿cuántos de ustedes ya la han visto? ¿quién opina algo diferente?
