Nominada a cinco premios Oscar
On Thursday, several of the films nominated for the main categories of the next Oscars were released in the cinemas in my city and since I wanted to see them all, I saw them. I spent the entire afternoon leaving one theater to enter another to see The Holdovers, Perfect Days, and The Zone of Interest, the latter two nominated for Best International Film (I also saw Madame Web in between, but I won't comment on that one).
El jueves se estrenaron en los cines de mi ciudad varias de las películas nominadas a las categorías principales de los próximos premios Oscar y como quería verlas todas, las vi. Pasé toda la tarde saliendo de una sala para ingresar a otra para ver The Holdovers, Perfect Days, y The Zone of Interest, estas últimas dos nominadas a Mejor Película Internacional (también vi Madame Web entre medio, pero no voy a hacer comentarios sobre esa).
The Zone of Interest is a film co-produced between the United Kingdom, the United States and Poland, filmed in German and directed by a British director, Jonathan Glazer, who also wrote the script based on his compatriot's novel Martin Amis. I didn't know anything about this film until the list of Oscar nominees was published and even then I didn't see a trailer, only the poster to which I didn't pay much attention either at that time or before entering the movie theater. I don't know if you are in the same situation, but let's assume so. Then I would tell you that the movie tells the story of Hedwig, a housewife who wants only the best for her children and for her loving husband who works hard to give them the life they lead, that life that they finally deserve with a nice house, not very large but comfortable rooms, a huge garden, greenhouse, swimming pool, servants, in an exclusive condominium for the employees of the institution for which Hedwig's husband works. There, the satisfied housewife can watch her children play, grow and develop amid abundant food, laughter and security. Said like that, it sounds like any family, an average family, and perhaps they would be if it weren't for one detail: Hedwig's husband is Commander Rudolf Höss, the man in charge of the Auschwitz concentration camp. And that changes everything, right?
The Zone of Interest es una película coproducida entre Reino Unido, los Estados Unidos y Polonia, filmada en alemán y dirigida por un director británico, Jonathan Glazer, quien además escribió el guión a partir de la novela de su compatriota Martin Amis. No sabía nada de esta película hasta que fue publicada la lista de los nominados a los premios Oscar y ni siquiera entonces vi un avance, solamente el poster al que no presté mucha atención ni en ese momento ni antes de ingresar a la sala de cine. No sé si ustedes estén en la misma situación, pero supongamos que sí. Entonces les diría que la película cuenta la historia de Hedwig, una ama de casa que desea sólo lo mejor para sus hijos y para su amado esposo que trabaja duro para darles la vida que llevan, esa vida que finalmente se merecen con una casa bonita, habitaciones no muy grandes pero cómodas, un enorme jardín, invernadero, piscina, servidumbre, en un condominio exclusivo para los empleados de la institución para la cual trabaja el esposo de Hedwig. Allí, la satisfecha ama de casa puede ver a sus hijos jugar, crecer y desarrollarse en medio de abundante comida, risas y seguridad. Dicho así suena como una familia cualquiera, una familia promedio, y quizás lo serían si no fuese por un detalle: el esposo de Hedwig es el comandante Rudolf Höss, el hombre a cargo del campo de concentración de Auschwitz. Y eso lo cambia todo, ¿{cierto?
Because then that peaceful, domestic and homely life seems banal, cruel and absurd to us. The Höss house is located next to the field, whose barracks can be seen over the garden wall. At no point do we enter the camp, we don't see torture or mistreatment, but the horror of the Holocaust and the annihilating machinery of Nazism are always present.
Porque entonces esa vida apasible, doméstica y hogareña nos parece banal, cruel y absurda. La casa de los Höss está ubicada al lado del campo, cuyos barracones se pueden ver por sobre el muro del jardín. En ningún momento ingresamos al campo, no vemos torturas ni maltratos, pero el horror del holocausto y la maquinaria aniquiladora del nazismo están siempre presentes.
I don't know if Amis's novel is responsible for that coldness, for that trivialization of evil, but I think it is what gives a tinge of horror to what is strictly speaking a drama. Of course, it must be noted that the soundtrack and the management's decisions help to intensify that feeling of discomfort, of rejection in the viewer because when the children bathe in the pool, they see the concentration camp on the other side of the wall; when Hedwig walks in front of her house, the barracks are seen; and when the nights are warm and an orange light filters through the curtains of the Höss's rooms, we know that the light doesn't come from the streetlights and that that smoke is not caused by dry firewood... now, imagine how It would be really being there, feeling the heat, the smoke and the smell... how could they live like that? How could they make cakes, eat breakfast, play, take care of their garden and lead a normal life living next to such a horror? During the second half the film leaves the house and we see other spaces, but the shock remains and is also accentuated when, almost as an epilogue, we manage to peek into the future of the place, that is, our present. We know that it's important to remember history so as not to repeat it, we know that concentration camps are a memorial for the victims, for their families, but something happened to me when I saw the film because now the idea of visiting a place like this as if it were a simple tourist attraction makes me uncomfortable.
No sé si la novela de Amis sea la responsable de esa frialdad, de esa banalización del mal, pero creo que es lo que le imprime un tinte de horror a lo que en rigor es un drama. Claro que hay que acotar que la banda sonora y las decisiones de la dirección ayudan a intensificar esa sensación de incomodidad, de rechazo en el especador porque cuando los niños se bañan en la piscina, se ve el campo de concetración al otro lado del muro; cuando Hedwig camina frente a su casa, se ven los barracones; y cuando las noches son cálidas y una luz naranja se cuela por las cortinas de las habitaciones de los Höss, sabemos que la luz no proviene de las farolas y que ese humo no es el que provoca la leña seca... ahora, imagínense cómo sería realmente estar allí, sintiendo el calor, el humo y el olor... ¿cómo podían vivir así? ¿cómo podían hacer pasteles, desayunar, jugar, cuidar su jardín y llevar una vida normal viviendo junto a semejante horror? Durante la segunda mitad la película sale de la casa y vemos otros espacios, pero el shock permanece y también se acentúa cuando, casi a manera de epílogo, logramos asomarnos al futuro del lugar, es decir a nuestro presente. Sabemos que es importante recordar la historia para no repetirla, sabemos que los campos de concentración son un memorial para las víctimas, para sus familiares, pero algo sucedió en mí al ver la película porque ahora me incomoda la idea de visitar un lugar así como si fuese una simple atracción turística.
The Zone of Interest has five nominations for the next Oscars: Best Picture, Best Direction, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Sound (it stands out a lot in this aspect) and Best International Film, a category that seems to be assured because in the last editions of the awards when a film has been nominated for both this award and the award of the night (Best Film), it usually wins Best International Film, as happened to All Quiet on the Western Front, Drive My Car and Parasite. In addition to the direction, the script, the theme and the way it was treated, one of the highlights of the film are the performances, especially that of Sandra Hüller as Hedwig, who also starred in another great film nominated for that night, Anatomy of a Fall, for which she also obtained the nomination for Best Leading Actress. So in any case, and whatever happens on March 10th, it will be a great night for Sandra. I know that the film has just been released, but if anyone has already seen it, I would like to know your opinion about it. The Zone of Interest cuenta con cinco nominaciones a los próximos premios Oscar: Mejor película, Mejor dirección, Mejor guion adaptado, Mejor sonido (se destaca mucho en este aspecto) y Mejor película internacional, categoría que parece estar asegurada porque en las últimas ediciones de los premios cuando una película ha estado nominada tanto a este galardón como al premio de la noche (Mejor Película), suele quedarse con el de Mejor Película Internacional, tal como le pasó a All Quiet on the Western Front, Drive My Car y Parasite. Adicional a la dirección, el guión, el tema y la forma en que fue tratado, uno de los aspectos más destacados de la cinta son las actuaciones, especialmente la de Sandra Hüller como Hedwig, quien también protagonizó otra gran película nominada para esa noche, Anatomy of a Fall, por la cual obtuvo además la nominación como Mejor Actriz Principal. Así que en cualquier caso, y pase lo que pase el diez de marzo, será una gran noche para Sandra. Sé que la película se acaba de estrenar, pero si acaso alguien ya la vio me gustaría conocer su opinión al respecto, ¿creen que tiene lo que se necesita para ser elegida como la Mejor Película en los Oscar por encima de Oppenheimer y Poor Things, entre otras? ¿Qué les pareció The Zone of Interest?
