It had been many years, I think almost a decade, since filmmaker Jean-Pierre Jeanut had directed a film. Last month saw the release on Netflix of his new production, a sci-fi social satire that I loved, but which some major film critics have defenestrated.

I don't understand what's going on, it seems the world has lost its sense of humor, of laughing at itself. Late last year, the film Don't Look Up divided critics and audiences. It could be that political correctness is making people hostile to comedies that point out the flaws in our society.
It could also be that they don't like to see themselves reflected in those productions, because they prefer to evade reality, sweep society's flaws under the rug and pretend they don't look like the characters in the movies.
Satire has always been an excellent way to make us reflect on mistakes, problems and even expose major conflicts or changes that could occur.
For me the use of satire in film is a way to make catharsis and point out the problems we are living and what could happen if we don't think about the drastic changes we live daily.
I am surprised by so many negative reviews of this film that it is true that it handles many stereotypes, but they are to make us laugh and reflect on the use we make of technology, as well as speculate about a not so distant future where we will be prisoners of it. The director also takes the opportunity to show the damage that human beings do to the entire ecosystem, turning this society of the future into slaves of technology, where roles are exchanged.

No entiendo qué está pasando, parece que el mundo ha perdido el sentido del humor, de reírse de si mismo. A finales del año pasado, la película No mires hacia arriba dividió a la crítica y al público. Podría ser que la corrección política esté haciendo que la gente sea hostil a las comedias que señalan los defectos de nuestra sociedad.
También puede ser que no les guste verse reflejados en esas producciones, porque prefieren evadir la realidad, esconder los defectos de la sociedad bajo la alfombra y fingir que no se parecen a los personajes de las películas.
La sátira siempre ha sido una excelente manera de hacernos reflexionar sobre los errores, los problemas e incluso de exponer los grandes conflictos o cambios que podrían producirse.
Para mí el uso de la sátira en el cine es una forma de hacer catarsis y señalar los problemas que estamos viviendo y lo que podría pasar si no pensamos en los cambios drásticos que vivimos a diario.
Me sorprenden tantas críticas negativas de esta película que es cierto que maneja muchos estereotipos, pero lo son para hacernos reír y reflexionar sobre el uso que hacemos de la tecnología, además de especular sobre un futuro no tan lejano donde seremos prisioneros de ella. El director también aprovecha para mostrar el daño que el ser humano hace a todo su ecosistema, convirtiendo a esta sociedad del futuro en esclavos de la tecnología, donde se intercambian los roles.
What is the plot of BigBug?
The world is in full technological apogee, it is the year 2045 and robots are part of everyday life, there are all kinds of models. People are totally dependent on technology. In a middle-class French suburb, a group of characters are trapped in a house after a state of emergency is declared. New android models called Yonyx have taken control of the entire system. All the inhabitants of the house will be desperate to get out, as they try to survive the chaos of their personal relationships and the domestic robots question their existence. Will they manage to get out of the house? How will they escape from what looks like a rebellion of the machines? Will they get back together and solve their personal problems? Is this a reflection of our future?

Opinion
Jean Pierre-Jeanut introduces many things in this satire framed in the science fiction genre. The main thing is the technological advancement and the use we make of it in our lives, making us less sociable people, difficult to engage in face-to-face communication and absolutely dependent on technology.
It should be noted that the film shows a suburb of people with certain purchasing power, so the most direct criticism is aimed at a certain social class, which can afford certain comforts, such as having domestic robots to take care of everything in the house.
On the other hand, the filmmaker shows the addiction to reality shows and those programs that have been absorbing the mind of the television consumer for a long time. Recognition, fame, being seen and admired, can have a reading to the reality we live in today, where young people have the desire to become influencers, today's celebrities.
At this point the story becomes macabre, showing how the control of machines can turn us into an object of entertainment, into a product, being this a clear denunciation of what has been our behavior towards the inferior species of our world and even against the environment.
These are just some of the themes that are satirically treated in the film, with situations that will make us laugh, but it will be an uncomfortable laughter because it seems that we are getting closer and closer to being as useless as the characters in the film.
Is this what bothers some critics and viewers so much? I loved the movie.

Jean Pierre-Jeanut introduce muchas cosas en esta sátira encuadrada en el género de la ciencia ficción. Lo principal es el avance tecnológico y el uso que hacemos de él en nuestras vidas, convirtiéndonos en personas menos sociables, difíciles de entablar una comunicación cara a cara y absolutamente dependientes de la tecnología.
Hay que tener en cuenta que la película muestra un suburbio de gente con cierto poder adquisitivo, por lo que la crítica más directa va dirigida a una determinada clase social, que puede permitirse ciertas comodidades, como tener robots domésticos que se encarguen de todo en la casa.
Por otro lado, el cineasta muestra la adicción a los realities y a aquellos programas que llevan tiempo absorbiendo la mente del consumidor de televisión. El reconocimiento, la fama, el ser visto y admirado, puede tener una lectura a la realidad que vivimos hoy en día, donde los jóvenes tienen el deseo de convertirse en influencers, en las celebridades de hoy.
En este punto la historia se vuelve macabra, mostrando cómo el control de las máquinas puede convertirnos en un objeto de entretenimiento, en un producto, siendo esto una clara denuncia de lo que ha sido nuestro comportamiento hacia las especies inferiores de nuestro mundo e incluso contra el medio ambiente.
Estos son sólo algunos de los temas que se tratan satíricamente en la película, con situaciones que nos harán reír, pero será una risa incómoda porque parece que cada vez estamos más cerca de ser tan inútiles como los personajes de la película.
¿Es esto lo que molesta tanto a algunos críticos y espectadores? A mi me ha encantado la película.

I remember when this filmmaker, along with his friend Marc, came to attention with the film Delicatessen. It wasn't their first collaboration together, but it was the one that put them on the radar. I admit that I don't like all of Jeaunet's films, but I disagree when it is said that BigBug is his worst film.
Jean-Pierre Jeaunet managed to fully establish himself with a film that did receive very positive reviews, as well as nominations and awards - Amelie.
He named that film because in BigBug the art direction is one of the strong points, the whole wrapping, the staging so colorful that it can seem that we are watching a comic book, with sets and images that exert a solid force of attraction that allows us to enjoy the story even more.
Those who know the filmography of the cienasta know that the visual aspect is very important for the director and perhaps sometimes he focuses more on that area and there are some oversights in a better development of the characters.
The stereotypes that are presented are very obvious, but in this case they didn't bother me, on the contrary, I was captivated by the visuals and since it's a satire, I didn't mind that some characters were so silly. I think one thing compensates for the other, I care that the message is clear and pleasant.
Androids
I love stories that star robots and present some social dilemmas. Advances in robotics and artificial intelligence are making great strides, so I'd like to be able to see some of that future they show in the movie.
How will the world change when we can have androids in our homes? What new laws will be created? What will be morally acceptable and what will be forbidden? To what extent will we be dependent on machines? Will there be a danger of androids taking over?
These and many other questions come to mind every time I see a work of science fiction in which androids challenge their creators. I find the future fascinating, but at the same time a bit scary. History, from the beginning until today, has been plagued by wars and conflicts, so it will be inevitable that androids of the future will be used as weapons not only in the military, but also in our own cities, neighborhoods and homes.
Evil exists, nothing can prevent this technology (when 100% functional) from being copied by organizations that only seek to cause terror in the world to achieve their goals. There are great challenges ahead and the worrying thing is that everything can get out of control.
As I said a few paragraphs back, the movie uses comedy to give us a warning sign. It is up to those who develop these technologies to take the necessary precautions so that the future is not as dark as it has been seen in many fictional movies.

Recuerdo cuando este cineasta, junto con su amigo Marc, llamó la atención con la película Delicatessen. No era su primera colaboración juntos, pero fue la que los puso en el radar. Reconozco que no me gustan todas las películas de Jeaunet, pero no estoy de acuerdo cuando se dice que BigBug es su peor película.
Jean-Pierre Jeaunet consiguió afianzarse plenamente con una película que sí recibió críticas muy positivas, así como nominaciones y premios: Amelie.
Nombró esa película porque en BigBug la dirección artística es uno de los puntos fuertes, todo el envoltorio, la puesta en escena tan colorida que puede parecer que estamos viendo un cómic, con decorados e imágenes que ejercen una sólida fuerza de atracción que nos permite disfrutar aún más de la historia.
Los que conocen la filmografía del cienasta saben que el aspecto visual es muy importante para el director y quizás a veces se centra más en ese ámbito y hay algunos descuidos en un mejor desarrollo de los personajes.
Los estereotipos que se presentan son muy obvios, pero en este caso no me molestaron, al contrario, me cautivó lo visual y como es una sátira, no me importó que algunos personajes fueran tan tontos. Creo que una cosa compensa la otra, me importa que el mensaje sea claro y agradable.
Androides
Me encantan las historias protagonizadas por robots y que presentan algunos dilemas sociales. Los avances en robótica e inteligencia artificial están avanzando mucho, así que me gustaría poder ver algo de ese futuro que muestran en la película.
¿Cómo cambiará el mundo cuando podamos tener androides en nuestras casas? ¿Qué nuevas leyes se crearán? ¿Qué será moralmente aceptable y qué estará prohibido? ¿Hasta qué punto dependeremos de las máquinas? ¿Existirá el peligro de que los androides tomen el control?
Estas y otras muchas preguntas me vienen a la cabeza cada vez que veo una obra de ciencia ficción en la que los androides desafían a sus creadores. El futuro me parece fascinante, pero al mismo tiempo me da un poco de miedo. La historia, desde el principio hasta hoy, ha estado plagada de guerras y conflictos, así que será inevitable que los androides del futuro se utilicen como armas no sólo en el ejército, sino también en nuestras propias ciudades, barrios y hogares.
El mal existe, nada puede evitar que esta tecnología (cuando sea 100% funcional) sea copiada por organizaciones que sólo buscan causar terror en el mundo para lograr sus objetivos. Hay grandes retos por delante y lo preocupante es que todo puede salirse de control.
Como dije unos párrafos atrás, la película utiliza la comedia para darnos una señal de alerta. Depende de quienes desarrollan estas tecnologías tomar las precauciones necesarias para que el futuro no sea tan oscuro como se ha visto en muchas películas de ficción.
Yanyx
The Yanyx android model in the film is the most advanced and is in charge of taking control of security.
The actor in charge of playing him is Francois Levantar, a veteran acting professional with a long career in the French shutter. An actor who has played many characters, but it may be the villain roles that suit his physiognomy.
In the role of the android Yanyx he manages to instill fear and amusement, with his strict demeanor accompanied by grotesque gestures that cause fascination for this android model.
Although seen from the beginning, his physical presence within the story does not occur until the first half, creating a somewhat disturbing atmosphere, as he acts as a tyrant willing to do anything to enforce the guidelines he has programmed.
An excellent performance from the actor who for me is the one who steals all the attention when he appears on screen.
Unhappiness
Another reading I gave to a part of the film, is the relationship of human beings and how despite having a good life and the best technological advances for their use, they fail to obtain full happiness.
The divorced couple who argue about everything, the woman who wants to be loved, the charlatan who only wants to sleep with her and lies about everything, the daughter who longs for the times of her nanny, the neighbor who in her loneliness uses her android for her personal satisfaction, the man who dates his young secretary believing that this makes her happy and the silly girl who wants to fulfill all her whims to hide her unhappiness.
All the characters are unhappy beings, unable to communicate in a civilized way, until an event that alters their lives, forces them to stay together, iron out their differences, come clean and work as a team to achieve a goal.
It seems that only situations that push us to the limit are the ones that bring us closer as human beings. Emphasizing that technology, depending on the use we make of it, may be transforming us into asocial beings. This is our current reality and it seems that nothing is going to change in the way we behave as a social nucleus, not even these movies that speculate us with this not so good future, seem to make people come to their senses.
The observers
Paradoxically, the domestic android characters do have good communication and learn from human behavior. They are the observers of everything and the ones who assimilate knowledge to understand us better.
While the humans in the story become less empathetic, the androids just want to be seen with humanity. A dilemma addressed in many movies and series, that of machines becoming humanized, trying to replicate human feelings, but in this case in a more humorous and lighter tone.
I like to analyze these details and so I find a parallel with the way we are observed through social networks, apps and the latest generation gadgets, which at the moment only accumulate data to manipulate us or induce us to do certain things, but when artificial intelligence is further developed and robots are in every home, we will be observed and studied 24 hours a day. A somewhat disturbing scenario, but it will surely be the price we will have to pay for enjoying technological progress.
Yanyx
El modelo de androide Yanyx de la película es el más avanzado y se encarga de tomar el control de la seguridad.
El actor encargado de interpretarlo es Francois Levantar, un veterano profesional de la interpretación con una dilatada carrera en la persiana francesa. Un actor que ha interpretado muchos personajes, pero puede que los papeles de villano sean los que se adapten a su fisonomía.
En el papel del androide Yanyx consigue infundir miedo y diversión, con su estricto comportamiento acompañado de gestos grotescos que causan fascinación por este modelo de androide.
Aunque se ve desde el principio, su presencia física dentro de la historia no se produce hasta la primera mitad, creando una atmósfera un tanto inquietante, ya que actúa como un tirano dispuesto a todo para hacer cumplir las pautas que ha programado.
Una excelente interpretación del actor que para mí es el que roba toda la atención cuando aparece en pantalla.
Infelicidad
Otra lectura que le di a una parte de la película, es la relación de los seres humanos y cómo a pesar de tener una buena vida y los mejores avances tecnológicos para su uso, no logran obtener la felicidad plena.
La pareja divorciada que discute por todo, la mujer que quiere ser amada, el charlatán que sólo quiere acostarse con ella y miente en todo, la hija que añora los tiempos de su niñera, la vecina que en su soledad utiliza su androide para su satisfacción personal, el hombre que sale con su joven secretaria creyendo que eso la hace feliz y la niña tonta que quiere cumplir todos sus caprichos para ocultar su infelicidad.
Todos los personajes son seres infelices, incapaces de comunicarse de forma civilizada, hasta que un acontecimiento que altera sus vidas, les obliga a permanecer juntos, limar sus diferencias, sincerarse y trabajar en equipo para conseguir un objetivo.
Parece que sólo las situaciones que nos llevan al límite son las que nos acercan como seres humanos. Destacando que la tecnología, dependiendo del uso que hagamos de ella, puede estar transformándonos en seres asociales. Esta es nuestra realidad actual y parece que nada va a cambiar en la forma de comportarnos como núcleo social, ni siquiera estas películas que nos especulan con este futuro no tan bueno, parecen hacer entrar en razón a la gente.
Los observadores
Paradójicamente, los personajes androides domésticos sí tienen una buena comunicación y aprenden del comportamiento humano. Son los observadores de todo y quienes asimilan los conocimientos para entendernos mejor.
Mientras que los humanos de la historia se vuelven menos empáticos, los androides sólo quieren ser vistos con humanidad. Un dilema abordado en muchas películas y series, el de las máquinas que se humanizan, intentando replicar los sentimientos humanos, pero en este caso en un tono más humorístico y ligero.
Me gusta analizar estos detalles y por ello encuentro un paralelismo con la forma en que somos observados a través de las redes sociales, las aplicaciones y los gadgets de última generación, que de momento sólo acumulan datos para manipularnos o inducirnos a hacer determinadas cosas, pero cuando la inteligencia artificial se desarrolle más y los robots estén en todos los hogares, seremos observados y estudiados las 24 horas del día. Un escenario un tanto inquietante, pero seguramente será el precio que tendremos que pagar por disfrutar del progreso tecnológico.
BigBug may not be Jeaunet's best film but it is not the worst either. I do not share the opinion of professional critics who have dedicated themselves to trampling the film.
Some of the characters may come across as very silly and full of clichés but. From my point of view the movie is entertaining, it takes that kind of characters to make the plot funny, I think the movie laughs at itself, you have to see it for what it is: a satire of our society.
I defend the film and recommend it, you will have a fun time, it will make you reflect a little on the use we are making of technology and shows us a hypothetical scenario of the near future. The performances are in line with the role it should play in the movie and the art design is beautiful and fascinating.

Puede que BigBug no sea la mejor película de Jeaunet pero tampoco es la peor, No comparto la opinión de los críticos profesionales que se han dedicado a pisotear la película.
Algunos personajes pueden resultar muy tontos y llenos de tópicos, pero. Desde mi punto de vista la película es entretenida, hacen falta ese tipo de personajes para que la trama sea divertida, creo que la película se ríe de sí misma, hay que verla como lo que es: una sátira de nuestra sociedad.
Defiendo la película y la recomiendo, pasarás un rato divertido, te hará reflexionar un poco sobre el uso que estamos haciendo de la tecnología y nos muestra un hipotético escenario del futuro próximo. Las actuaciones son acordes con el papel que debe jugar en la película y el diseño artístico es hermoso y fascinante.
