My previous post in this Community Movies and Tv Shows was about the series Misa de Medianoche and I told you that I really admire the work of Director Mike Flanagan, today I remembered a movie of his, from 2016 called Hush where the protagonist is again a very well-known face in his series, the actress Kate Siegel who is his wife.
I really enjoy movies or series in which the characters make decisions that we could make in real life and under special situations, since I feel that I get more involved in the plot and I consume better everything that the Director wants to tell us through intense atmospheres, and an example of that that I like is the movie Hush
Mi anterior publicación en esta Comunidad Movies and Tv Shows fue sobre la serie Misa de Medianoche y les comenté que admiro mucho el trabajo del Director Mike Flanagan, hoy recordé una película de él, del año 2016 llamada Hush donde la protagonista vuelve a ser una cara muy conocida en sus series, la actriz Kate Siegel quien es su esposa.
Disfruto mucho las películas o series en las que los personajes toman decisiones que podríamos tomar nosotros en la vida real y bajo situaciones especiales, ya que siento que me involucro más en la trama y consumo mejor todo lo que el Director nos quiere contar a través de atmósferas intensas, y un ejemplo de eso que me gusta es la película Hush
Hush begins with Maddie (Kate Siegel) a woman who is cooking and we can hear all the sounds of hot oil, the cutting of food, everything and suddenly everything continues happening without any sound, and as spectators we can realize that this is how Maddie perceives the world, since she is deaf and mute. It can be overwhelming to see everyday life without having the senses of hearing and speech, everything looks very different, however our protagonist handles everything very well, she has adapted to her limitations and is a very independent woman.
Maddie is a writer and lives in a small cabin practically isolated. The film takes place on a night when a killer with a white mask comes to her house and for no reason at all wants to kill her. She fights to survive using her intelligence, her ability to think and act quickly from the first moment. So Hush is simply a cat and mouse movie.
Hush comienza con Maddie (Kate Siegel) una mujer que está cocinando y podemos escuchar todos los sonidos del aceite caliente, el corte de los alimentos, de todo y de pronto todo sigue transcurriendo sin sonido alguno, y como espectadores podemos darnos cuenta que así es como percibe el mundo Maddie, ya que ella es sorda y muda. Logra ser abrumador ver la cotidianidad sin tener los sentidos del oido y el habla, todo luce muy diferente, sin embargo nuestra protagonista lo lleva todo muy bien, se ha adaptado a sus limitaciones y es una mujer muy independiente.
Maddie es escritora y vive en una pequeña cabaña prácticamente aislada. La película transcurre en una noche en la que un asesino con una máscara blanca, llega a su casa y sin razón alguna pues quiere matarla. Ella lucha por sobrevivir haciendo uso de su inteligencia, de su capacidad de pensar y actuar rápido desde el primer momento. Así es que Hush es simplemente una película del gato y el ratón.
Our masked killer played by John Gallagher, detects that his target and prey is deaf and mute, and believes that this will make it easier, he even removes his mask in front of her, since he does not see her as a threat. The entire film will be a constant hunter and prey dynamic, which managed to keep me on the edge of my seat at all times, with a sustained rhythm of great suspense and tension, and a very exciting climax that made me get up to endure it.
In the film there are a few secondary characters, who are there to give context to Maddie's life and add more emotion to the situations, but in my opinion they are well planted. They do not feel forced and when the killer kills them I did feel sorry for them, and that tells me that the story is well told, because I managed to empathize with characters who were only in the film for a few minutes.
Nuestro asesino enmascarado interpretado por John Gallagher, detecta que su objetivo y presa es sorda y muda, y cree que esto lo hará más fácil, incluso se retira la máscara frente a ella, ya que no la ve como una amenaza. Toda la película será una dinámica de cazador y presa constante, que logró tenerme al borde del mueble en todo momento, con un ritmo sostenido de mucho suspenso y tensión, y un clímax muy emocionante que me hizo levantarme para aguantarlo.
En la película aparecen unos pocos personajes secundarios, que están ahí para dar contexto a la vida de Maddie y añadir más emoción a las situaciones, pero en mi opinión están bien plantados. No se sienten forzados y cuando el asesino los matas si sentí pena por ellos, y eso me dice que la historia está bien narrada, porque logré empatizar con personajes que estuvieron por pocos minutos en la película.
But, with a situation as basic as "the killer and the prey" and so few characters... Why did I like Hush so much? Well, I'll explain it briefly:
The house: The cabin where Maddie lives is almost a character in the movie. It has many windows and glass doors in almost 360°. So, although Maddie is cornered and imprisoned in her house, we can see the activity and interaction with the killer in very exciting sequences, in which she can see him, but he can also see her, and not only do they see each other, they are also constantly communicating.
Use of technology: Maddie has a cell phone, laptop, internet, tools that she has adapted to her disability and that she uses perfectly. I find it interesting to see how with her condition she can use technology. Of course, the killer leaves her without these resources during his fierce hunt.
Pero, con una situación tan básica como "el asesino y la presa" y tan pocos personajes... ¿Por qué me gustó tanto Hush? Pues, lo explicaré puntualmente:
- La casa: La cabaña donde vive Maddie es casi un personaje de la película. Tiene muchas ventanas y puertas de vidrio en casi 360°. De manera que, aunque Maddie está acorralada y presa en su casa, la actividad e interacción con el asesino la podemos apreciar en secuencias muy emocionantes, en la que ella puede verlo a él, pero él también puede verla, y no solo se ven también se están comunicando constantemente.
- Uso de la tecnología: Maddie dispone de celular, laptop, internet, herramientas que tiene adaptadas a su discapacidad y que usa perfectamente. Me parece interesante ver como con su condición puede utilizar la tecnología. Claro que el asesino la deja sin estos recursos durante su feroz cacería.
In just a few minutes and with an excellent narrative, we get to know aspects of Maddie's life that allowed me to empathize with her, aspects such as the fact that she was not born with that disability, her methodology for writing books, a love relationship she had a year ago and that she still hasn't gotten over, about her sister who wants to take care of her, and how independent her personality is. In other words, I think she is a well-constructed character and they make us get to know her.
The excellent performance of Kate Siegel as Maddie and John Gallagher as the killer, are very convincing in their characters, their faces truly transmit even without dialogue, even in the very close shots of their faces. The killer, although not ugly or threatening in his physique, does manage to transmit that overflowing and disturbing aggressiveness.
A Maddie en pocos minutos y con una excelente narrativa, logramos conocer aspectos de su vida que me permitieron empatizar con ella, aspectos como que no nació con esa discapacidad, su metodología para escribir libros, una relación amorosa que tuvo hace un año y que aún no supera, sobre su hermana que la quiere cuidar, y de lo independiente que es su personalidad. Es decir, que me parece que es un personaje bien construido y que nos lo hacen conocer.
La excelente actuación de Kate Siegel como Maddie y de John Gallagher como el asesino, son muy convincentes en sus personajes, sus rostros transmiten verdaderamente aún sin diálogos, incluso en las tomas muy de cerca en sus rostros. El asesino aunque no es feo ni amenazante en su físico, si logra transmitir esa agresividad desbordada y perturbadora.
In conclusion, Hush is an intense and well-executed psychological horror film, although it is a simple story, it will manage to keep you in a lot of tension and almost thinking with Maddie what to do to solve or get out of this situation.
The climax of the film or its final act is unexpected and very exciting, I assure you that you will get up from the couch to endure it.
Due to its simple and basic plot like "the killer and his prey" and the few characters, it may not be a memorable film in the opinion of some scholars of the seventh art, but as a film to enjoy and recommend I assure you that it is excellent.
By the way, another fact that really excited me. To make this post with more details than just what I remember, I decided to watch the movie again and I got really excited with this little gem from the Director: Maddie has a neighbor and friend who read one of her books, and she tells Maddie that she loved the characters of Riley and Erin... and guess what? Well, that's exactly the name of two of the main characters in the Midnight Mass series, and that was exciting for me. Of course, the first time I saw this movie this didn't mean anything to me, but today I did "understand the reference" and I loved it.
En conclusión, Hush en una película de terror psicológico intenso y bien ejecutado, si bien es una historia sencilla, logrará tenerte en mucha tensión y casi que pensando junto a Maddie qué hacer para resolver o salir de esta situación.
El clímax de la película o su acto final son inesperados y muy emocionantes, te aseguro que te vas a levantar del mueble para soportarlo.
Que por su trama tan sencilla y básica como "el asesino y su presa" y los pocos personajes, tal vez no sea una película memorable en la opinión de algunos eruditos del séptimo arte, pero como película para disfrutar y Recomendar te aseguro que es Excelente.
Por cierto, otro dato que me emocionó muchísimo. Para realizar este post con más detalles que solo los que recuerdo, decidí ver nuevamente la película y me emocioné mucho con esta perlita del Director: Maddie tiene una vecina y amiga que leyó uno de sus libros, y le comenta a Maddie que amó los personajes de Riley y Erin... ¿y adivinen qué? Pues justamente así se llaman dos de los protagonistas de la serie Misa de Medianoche, y eso fue emocionante para mí, la primera vez que vi esta película por supuesto que esto no me dijo nada, pero hoy si "Entendí la Referencia" y lo amé.
