“Black birds tend to like shiny things.” ~ The Bloody Raven
Come mid-November I had the opportunity to scratch a few items off the Pirate Silver coin Shopping list. With my main Core Stacking objectives complete as of March 2020 I could leisurely pick odd single silver themed coins since market premiums are still on the high side across the board.
One of my Canadian E-retailers now carried a few Anonymous Mint products that I was interested in. Admittedly, the silver coins I acquired were not exactly as I envisioned them. Coming in as Brilliant Uncirculated variety was fine as a Bullion round. Examining the Anonymous Mint website, you would see their Premium silver products have much more value-added features and quality. No mention of the typical strike rounds.
To his Bloody Silver medallion
This explains the low pricing of today’s feature silver bullion coin. Because it was not made in limited quantity, serialized, and come with a Certificate of Authenticity, nor did it have a Mirrored finish or Toned. Just the simple no frills Brilliant Uncirculated and that just suits me fine.
The illustration is first published in the Captain Charles Johnson (a writer’s pseudonym who may be author Nathaniel Mist) book, A General History of the Lives and Adventures of the Most Famous Highwaymen, Murderers, Street-Robbers & Co.
Co-authored by English writer Daniel Defoe in 1724/6, a later edition of the same popularized book was changed to; A General History of the Robberies and Murders of the most notorious Pyrates. adding Blackbeard the Pirate
Daniel Defoe is also known as the Author of Robinson Crusoe in 1719.
A Brief Bio of Blackbeard
Edward Teach was his professional name but even that was not his true name since his Naval career in the English navy and as a Privateer prior to turning pirate and then assuming the nickname of Blackbeard.
Likely born into a wealthy English family, the Teach name may be used to shield his true family’s name with the latest unsupported claim coming from the Drummond surname. Without any supporting evidence his real name may never be known. I like that; tall, a bit dark and very mysterious.
Following war, Teach followed the Privateer turned Pirate Henry Jennings setting up a base of at the Island of New Providence. In 1716 he then followed Captain Benjamin Hornigold and had turns at command of the Marianne before placing a newly captured sloop, Adventure under Teach’s command.
In November 1717, Teach captures the French Slave ship, La Concorde and renamed her Queen Anne’s Revenge.
“Teach was tall, with broad shoulders. He wore knee-length boots and dark clothing, topped with a wide hat and sometimes a long coat of brightly coloured silk or velvet. Johnson also described Teach in times of battle as wearing "a sling over his shoulders, with three brace of pistols, hanging in holsters like bandoliers; and stuck lighted slow matches under his hat" ~ the account of Blackbeard by Charles Johnson 1724.
With command of the Revenge, Blackbeard practically terrorized all shipping British, Spanish, and Portuguese before running the Revenge aground on Top Sail Inlet June 1718. Blackbeard resumed his Pirate activity with the Adventure and the Ranger until November until he encountered Lieutenant Maynard’s command.
Our Second Feature seaworthy Silver medallion
Sweet. If you have followed me for more than a year is that I have a variety of Kraken Themed coins; Provident’s Privateer, Intaglio Mint and MKBarz just to name a few. So, I have already covered this subject quite thoroughly before. Remember the Kraken attacked the Viking’s imagination long before other European kingdom’s imaginations.
Thank you for coming aboard me blog today…
Or at least enjoyed his dramatic confrontation with Lt. Maynard!
