One thing that drives me nuts on the highway is someone who goes 5 over the speed limit, then 10 under the speed limit. Then goes 5 over, then 10 under again. There is this fancy thing in your new fancy car called cruise control… it’s pretty magical. It keeps you car going at a set speed. WOW what a concept. It’s been around since 1948 for the love of God. Plus it’s a great way to get better fuel mileage. Anyway…
After from spending some time with family celebrating my Grandma’s 93rd birthday… That’s right 93!! She is still sharp as a tack. Though I did manage to surprise her because she had no idea we were coming. We live about an hour away, so it’s not like I can just drive down the road. I loved seeing that surprise look on her face.
So on the way home I got stuck behind one of these people that’s clueless of the abilities of their car to maintain a constant speed.
Slow down
Speed up
Slow down…
Finally a straight away with a break in the oncoming traffic on this 2 lane highway. Time to smash the skinny pedal on my 2001 Ford Excursion diesel, blow a little black smoke, boost up and pass this person. I always laugh when I pass a small car in this monster of an Excursion I have. When they look out their window all they see is the side of the Excursion. As the sound of a Turbo Diesel engine leaves them in the dust.
Just as I got past them and getting to ready to let off the accelerator…
My wife frantically asking,
“What was that!!”
“Just blew a boot off or some type of boost line”
“Which is it??”
“I don’t know I’m driving, I can’t see under the hood”
I knew what that exact sound was… I blew a boot off of my intercooler/turbo system somewhere. I’m only about 12 miles from home so I will just monitor my Exhaust Gas Temps and get home, then check it in the morning during the daylight. It’s amazing how much power a turbo charger provides. Lol. I was still able to drive 65mph the rest of the way home.
I’m just happy that the 35 psi boost just popped the boot off and didn’t blow the pipe in half like I did on my truck a couple years ago. Also the fact that I wasn’t towing a trailer in 100F weather up a steep grade this time.
Easy fix, just loosing the clamp, shove the pipe back in the boot and tighten the piss out of it. Then go around to all the other clamps and hit them a little bit more just for good measure.
My 2001 Excursion 7.3 Powerstroke only runs 17 psi boost when it is bone stock. Add a few goodies under the hood, fuel system, billet aluminum turbo compressor wheel, performance tuner, stronger turbo wastegate, intake and a free flowing exhaust and I can get 35 psi boost out of it. Not to mention that get up and go for passing people that don’t know how to use their cruise control..
