A Recent Purchase
This Friday, I checked how much Whisper Barons cost and found the price to be acceptable.
Despite the decline of Deception, I decided to play it again. I have excellent (budget) War and Magic decks but I don't have the energy to master my War and Magic skills and just feel bored about their playing styles (maybe, I'll change this attitude one day).
Whisper Baron doesn't look a very tough creature with health 3 only - too many spells and overkill can ruin it even before it leaves the shade. But I decided to give it a try especially because I have experience playing a deck with Desert Mercenary synergy and I have all sorts of Guild creatures.
Light and War are popular these days and this is an extra chance for a deck with Whisper Barons.
It was Friday when I bought a couple of them so I had no time to create a refreshed playing style and to break into Mythic. So I started my WR in Ethereal Diamond.
16/25 in Ethereal Diamond, Entered Mythic At the End of WR
The result isn't amazing but I come back to Mythic on Saturday evening and this is good news for me and for my deck.
Domain | I won | I lost |
---|---|---|
Light | 0 | 0 |
War | 5 | 3 |
Nature | 5 | 1 |
Death | 0 | 1 |
Magic | 3 | 3 |
Deception | 3 | 1 |
Alas, I had 6 games against Magic, the toughest domain for me, and no games against Light. Playing against Light on Friday right before WR was quite positive.
The Deck
Look at the deck on Gudecks.Com.

Specially For War and Light
I created this deck to fight against War and Light first of all. This is why I included
- 2 Umber Arrows
- 2 Makeshift Shivs
- 2 Mugging
- a relic remover Nightleaf Trapper which, besides, is a 1-mana Guild creature and this is what we need for Whisper Barons.
Going to hijack a venomous Athenian Archer for killing its creator, Uncanny Rogue
Deck With Almost No Singletons
To make the mulligan better. I made an exception for 1 Piercing Bolt though, for quick removal of armor, All-Seeing Spires, etc.
Whisper Baron Synergy
All 19 creatures of the deck belong to Guild.
3 of them are 1-mana Guild creatures which is especially good.
Frumentarii Instigator Synergy
The card is amazing for a deck with so many Guild creatures. It draws a card for each enemy creature too so you may get a boost while playing against Deception.
Desert Mercenary Synergy
I included 12 creatures that work with the roar of Desert Mercenary:
- 2 Desert Mercenaries
- 2 Armor Lurkers
- 2 Vault Vagabonds
- 2 Jinxblade Duelists
- 2 Whisper Barons
- 2 Diligent Architects
Not Included
The Hollow - I considered it to be too slow.
Lady Marcella - Too unpredictable.
Selfless Guildmate - I found no space for this interesting Guild creature.
1 Prison Escapee in the deck is great against War and Light but I found no space for it this time.
How to Enhance the Deck
Merrick, Keeper of the Many, of course. It falls under the synergy of Whisper Barons, Desert Mercenaries, Frumentarii Instigators.
A Whisper Baron collected a decent amount of strength + Merrick are killer. Magic will be the easiest victim of such a tandem.
I don't have it. Thinking of buying it...
Lady Marcella fits the deck so well too so I would like to try it. Happily, I have one.
Playing Barons
The main thing about playing Whisper Baron is how long to keep it hidden? So you need time to learn how to play it.
Light is the perfect opponent for Barons since it can do not much with a hidden creature so you can keep collecting power. Magic is the opposite.
Playing against Light, I feel freer to clean the board with Barons too.
On the screenshot above, I have total 12 strength (+4 under order) on the 4th turn, quite aggro.
Nature is dangerous but Desert Mercenaries can help to crowd the deck with Guild creatures.
Baron for 1 mana thanks to Desert Mercenary.
2 Whisper Barons on the board is a good chance to collect big power.
Selfless Guildmate gives +4 to Whisper Baron. This is clearly better than Dark Knives this time. I didn't include it in the final version of the deck though.
The Hollow and Whisper Baron are good friends if you can find a place for the Hollow in your deck.
Conclusion
In spite of low health, Whisper Baron is a great creature for a Guild deck. There are many things to try with it including playing with the Hollow, Lady Marcella, Merrick.
I hope that I will play this deck in Mythic the next weekend.
Thank you for stopping by! 🙂
