Hoy les traigo esta segunda parte de esta trilogía cronológica, que decidí colocarlas respetando el orden en que sucedieron. Esto quizá podría considerarse un capricho de autor, pues las tres partes de la historia, aunque tienen conexión, bien podrían haber aparecido como historias sueltas.
Doy continuación con esta publicación a mis intentos por profundizar en ese estilo literario que se ha ido convirtiendo en un sello latinoamericano, la crónica literaria.
Today I bring you this second part of this chronological trilogy, which I decided to place them respecting the order in which they happened. This could perhaps be considered an author's whim, since the three parts of the story, although they are connected, could well have appeared as single stories.
With this publication I continue my attempts to delve into that literary style that has become a Latin American trademark, the literary chronicle.

Cerca de dos meses intensos de trabajo en un evento internacional de teatro había dejado mi cuenta bancaria bien provista. En la exposición donde había estado trabajando, Naghieli Godoy, hija de gente de teatro y amiga mía, y otra de las guías, Laura Sánchez, profesora de francés y con quien se tejió una hermosa amistad desde ese momento, se habían puesto de acuerdo para hacer un viaje una vez terminara el evento. Como nota curiosa me comentaron las excelentes oportunidades que ofrecía un organismo llamado ONTEJ (Organización nacional de turismo estudiantil y juvenil), que trabajaba con vuelos charter, posadas estudiantiles y comedores universitarios a nivel mundial.
Lorenzo Angiolillo, quien siempre fue como mi hermano y quien también había trabajado en el mencionado evento, quedó, al igual que yo, impactado por las ofertas que ofrecían, así que rápidamente sacamos cuentas y decidimos sumarnos a la aventura.
El destino inicial sería París. Allí me quedaría yo y Lorenzo seguiría viaje a Italia para conocer a los familiares de su padre, emigrante de esas tierras. El paquete que ofrecía ONTEJ era por 45 días. Como nuestra reservación fue hecha posterior a la de Laura y Naghieli, nos íbamos por separado y nos veríamos luego en París.
El 13 de agosto de 1978, en horas del mediodía, nos presentamos en el aeropuerto para tomar el vuelo que nos llevaría a Bruselas, capital de Bélgica, desde donde el viaje seguiría por tierra. Fue allí que nos enteramos que en el mismo vuelo iría también el nuevo Orfeón Universitario de la UCV (Universidad Central de Venezuela).
Esta agrupación, una de las más emblemáticas del país, se había convertido en un símbolo muy dramático pues dos años antes, el 3 de septiembre de 1976, el Orfeón Universitario sufrió un accidente aéreo en las Islas Azores, en el cual murieron sus más de 50 integrantes, incluyendo a su director Vinicio Adames.
Aprovechando la cercanía del segundo aniversario de esta fatídica fecha y en vista de que nuestro vuelo haría escala en las mismas Islas Azores, la nueva agrupación le haría un pequeño acto de homenaje durante la escala en la isla atlántica.
Por supuesto, pensar en un viaje con el Orfeón Universitario y hacer escala en las Azores, era algo que dejaba una extraña sensación en la mayoría de los pasajeros. Pero debido a que se trataba de un vuelo charter para jóvenes, el entusiasmo y la alegría se impusieron rápidamente y a las 4:00pm el vuelo de la línea GerminAir tomó pista y se enfiló hacia el cielo.
El despegue fue normal y la charla amena se apoderó de la aeronave. Sin embargo, un par de horas después vemos que una de las aeromozas nota algo en el techo del pasillo. Se va y regresa una y otra vez, luego busca una linterna y empieza a traer a las demás azafatas para que vieran su descubrimiento. Finalmente trajo consigo a uno de los capitanes del avión y luego de revisarlo, ella y una de sus compañeras empezaron a llorar y todos volvieron a la cabina.
En este tiempo también pudimos notar que de la misma cabina del capitán salían de manera misteriosa con una cartera. Primero entró una de las azafatas al baño con el bolso, lo cual nos llamo la atención. Sin embargo, salió de allí sin él. Luego entró otra y fue esta quien lo sacó. Pero luego lo llevó otra de nuevo y lo dejó adentro, mientras varios de los miembros de la tripulación entraban y salían del baño. Conducta que puso a nuestros juveniles mentes a pensar que se trataba de consumo de sustancias intoxicantes.
Horas más tarde seguía ese movimiento sospechoso, hasta que en un momento el mismo capitán salió gateando de la cabina, en un estado aparentemente de borrachera o de drogas. De esa manera entró al baño y así mismo salió varios minutos después.
Mientras nos íbamos acercando a las Azores el mal tiempo empezó a sacudir el avión violentamente, a niveles casi alarmante, ante lo cual Lorenzo y yo empezamos a bromear al respecto, con el fin de distraernos de la preocupación real. Pero como muchachos al fin, lo hacíamos con humor negro, haciendo referencia a la borrachera del piloto, la presencia del Orfeón, la llegada a las Azores, la tormenta…
Para nosotros dos fue un excelente remedio y aunque era una conversación entre nosotros dos, después de un largo rato, vemos que del asiento delantero emerge en cámara lenta una muchacha, blanca como un fantasma, con los ojos rojos del terror que tenía y con voz temblorosa, pero decidida nos dijo con un grito ahogado —¡Se pueden callar!— Y el silencio se hizo.
El mal tiempo siguió haciendo de las suyas, tanto así que estuvieron a punto de suspender la escala. Sin embargo, aterrizamos en las Azores, pero no permitieron el desembarque de pasajeros. En medio de aquella terrible tempestad solo se bajo la azafata con el misterioso bolso, se dirigió a un vehículo que se estacionó cerca del avión y en menos de cinco minutos regresó con las manos vacías. A las 9:45 pm alzamos de nuevo el vuelo, dejando atrás el mal tiempo que estremecía la nave, los truenos que hacían vibrar nuestros asientos y los rayos que se colaban al interior del avión a pesar de las ventanillas cerradas.
Sin explicación quedó el llanto de la azafata con su descubrimiento en el techo, así como el contenido del bolso y el increíble paseo en cuatro patas del piloto de la nave.
El viejo continente nos recibió con un espléndido y brillante sol que nos devolvió la sonrisa y luego de 5 horas en la capital belga, abordamos el tren que nos conduciría a la ciudad luz y a una increíble experiencia y aprendizajes de mes y medio que fueron determinantes en mi vida.

Nearly two intense months of work in an international theater event had left my bank account well supplied. At the exhibition where I had been working, Naghieli Godoy, daughter of theater people and a friend of mine, and another of the guides, Laura Sanchez, a French teacher and with whom a beautiful friendship was woven from that moment on, had agreed to take a trip once the event was over. On a curious note, they told me about the excellent opportunities offered by an organization called ONTEJ (National Organization of Student and Youth Tourism), which worked with charter flights, student inns and university canteens worldwide.
Lorenzo Angiolillo, who was always like my brother and who had also worked in the mentioned event, was, like me, impressed by the opportunities offered, so we quickly did the math and decided to join the adventure.
The initial destination would be Paris. I would stay there and Lorenzo would continue his trip to Italy to meet the relatives of his father, an emigrant from those lands. The package offered by ONTEJ was for 45 days. As our reservation was made after Laura's and Naghieli's, we were flying separately and we would later meet in Paris.
On August 13, 1978, at noon, we showed up at the airport for the flight to Brussels, the capital of Belgium, from where the trip would continue overland. It was there that we found out that the new Orfeón Universitario (University Choral Society) of the UCV (Central University of Venezuela) would also be on the same flight.
This group, one of the most emblematic of the country, had become a very dramatic symbol because two years before, on September 3, 1976, the Orfeón Universitario suffered a plane crash in the Azores Islands, in which its more than 50 members, including its director Vinicio Adames, died.
Taking advantage of the proximity of the second anniversary of this fateful date and in view of the fact that our flight would stop over in the Azores Islands, the new group would make a small act of homage during the stopover in the Atlantic island.
Of course, the thought of a trip with the Orfeón Universitario and a stopover in the Azores was something that left a strange feeling in most of the passengers. But because it was a charter flight for young people, enthusiasm and joy quickly prevailed and at 4:00pm the GerminAir flight took the runway and headed for the sky.
The take-off was normal and pleasant chatter took over the aircraft. However, a couple of hours later we see that one of the flight attendants notices something on the ceiling of the aisle. She leaves and comes back again and again, then fetches a flashlight and starts bringing the other flight attendants along to see her discovery. She finally brought one of the captains of the plane with her and after checking it out, she and one of her companions started crying and they all went back to the cockpit.
During this time we also noticed that from the same captain's cabin they mysteriously came out with a purse. First one of the stewardesses went into the bathroom with the bag, which caught our attention. However, she left without it. Then another one came in and it was this one who took it out. But then another one took it again and left it inside, while several of the crew members went in and out of the restroom. Behavior that put our juvenile minds to think that it was consumption of intoxicating substances.
Hours later, this suspicious movement continued, until at one point the captain himself crawled out of the cabin, apparently in a state of drunkenness or on drugs. He went into the bathroom and came out several minutes later.
As we were approaching the Azores the bad weather began to shake the plane violently, to almost alarming levels, to which Lorenzo and I began to joke about it, in order to distract us from the real concern. But as boys at last, we did it with black humor, referring to the pilot's drunkenness, the presence of the Orfeón, the landing in the Azores, the storm....
For the both of us it was an excellent remedy and although it was a conversation between the two of us, after a long while, we see that from the front seat emerges in slow motion a girl, white as a ghost, with her eyes red with terror and with a trembling voice, but determined, she told us with a stifled scream -You can shut up!- And the silence was made.
The bad weather continued to play its part, so much so that they were on the verge of suspending the stopover. However, we landed in the Azores, but they did not allow passengers to disembark. In the middle of that terrible storm, only the stewardess got off with the mysterious bag, went to a vehicle that was parked near the plane and in less than five minutes returned empty-handed. At 9:45 pm we took off again, leaving behind the bad weather that shook the airplane, the thunder that made our seats vibrate and the lightning that crept inside the plane in spite of the closed windows.
The crying of the stewardess with her discovery on the ceiling, the contents of the bag and the incredible four-legged ride of the pilot of the aircraft remained unexplained.
The old continent welcomed us with a splendid and bright sun that gave us back a smile and after 5 hours in the Belgian capital, we boarded the train that would lead us to the city of light and an incredible experience and learning of a month and a half that were decisive in my life.
