I have this book in two different editions , and this one that I show, in a smaller and more colorful format, is my favorite. It is about “The Mighty Orinoco”, a work that Jules Verne wrote in 1898, more than 120 years ago! It is a very long time.
The covers in this book are too special because they have fold-out illustrations. Inside the book there are a few more illustrations. They are by Alfredo González Sánchez, who sometimes used the nickname "Cafarini". On the cover you can see this signature, inside it simply says "Alfredo". I have another book with his illustrations, which I think are worthy of admiration. There are coincidences in the time between these works, as this little book was printed in Madrid in 1979, two years after "Rosa y Azul".
To make the story short of this novel and without spoilers: in 1898 a girl disguises herself as a man to search for her father lost in the Venezuelan jungle. She is accompanied by a sergeant who pretends to be her uncle and on the way they meet some Venezuelans and French researchers, who want to discover the original bed of the Orinoco River and join the girl's cause. Will she find her father? Will she make it?
The fluvial adventures are not few, almost shipwrecks, Amazonian fevers, fascination for unknown animals and encounters with indigenous people (from a colonial perspective, of course).
I am not the first to imagine this great adventure as a movie. In 2005 a Venezuelan filmmaker, Alfredo Anzola, directed "1888, the extraordinary journey of Santa Isabel", here is a lot of slack in the plot, because even Jules Verne himself appears, haha.
It would be a dream a new spectacular edition with the amazing landscapes that Verne describes, whose eyes never saw the flow of this impressive river, by the way.
I particularly like a chapter called "Respect for the Tapir" which basically talks about how our adventurers were chased by the Piaroa natives when they killed a tapir that they had mistaken for a beast.
"Not only do they believe in spirits, but they see the Tapir as one of their ancestors, the most venerable and revered of the ancient Piaroas. In the body of a tapir the soul of an Indian will lodge. So one less tapir is one less accommodation for those souls, who run the absolute prohibition of shortening the days of an animal destined for the honorable mission of shelter ".
Another very cinematographic fragment:
“After a few hours of rest, the travelers got back on track. If the slope of the ground was accentuated, the thickness of the forest did not diminish. Always the same trees and the same brambles. Along the Torrida, numerous obstacles were avoided through the thickets, full of palm trees. There was no doubt that by nightfall the distance calculated by Jacques Helloch had gone, except for complications ”.
“The forest was very lively. Thousands of birds flew from branch to branch, singing loudly. The monkeys were capering on the branches, mainly a few pairs of those screeching puppets, which do not scream during the day, and reserve their deafening concerts for the night or early morning. Among the volatiles, Germán Paterne had the satisfaction of observing flocks of guácharos or diabolinos, whose presence indicated that they were approaching the eastern coast. Disturbed in their daytime tranquility, because they hardly leave the rocky crevices until night, they took refuge on the top of the matacas, whose berries, febrifugal like the bark of the coloradito, serve as food ".
This is my entry for this initiative that I really liked, for this reading community that I am getting to know, and answering the question about which book I would choose to make a film. I hope you liked it!.

Tengo este libro en dos ediciones diferentes, y esta que les muestro, en un formato más pequeño y colorido, es mi favorita. Se trata del Soberbio Orinoco, una obra que Julio Verne escribió en 1898, ¡hace más de 120 años!, es muchísimo tiempo.
Las guardas de este libro son demasiado especiales porque tienen ilustraciones desplegables. A lo interno del libro hay unas cuantas ilustraciones más. Son de Alfredo González Sánchez, que en ocasiones utilizó el sobrenombre de "Cafarini". En la portada se puede apreciar esta firma, a lo interno coloca sencillamente Alfredo. Tengo otro libro con sus ilustraciones, que creo que son dignas de admirar. Hay coincidencias en el tiempo entre estás obras, pues este librito se imprimió en Madrid en 1979, dos años después de Rosa y Azul.
Para hacer la historia de esta novela corta y sin spoilers: en el año 1898 una chica se disfraza de hombre para buscar a su padre perdido en la selva venezolana. La acompaña un sargento que se hace pasar por su tío y en el camino conocen a unos venezolanos y a franceses investigadores, que quieren descubrir el cauce originario del río Orinoco y se unen a la causa de la chica. ¿Encontrará a su padre? ¿lo logrará?
Las aventuras fluviales no son pocas, casi naufragios, fiebres amazónicas, fascinación por animales desconocidos y encuentros con indígenas (desde una mirada colonial, por supuesto).
No soy la primera en imaginarme esta gran aventura como una película. En el año 2005 un cineasta venezolano, Alfredo Anzola, dirigió "1888, el extraordinario viaje de la Santa Isabel", aquí hay bastante holgura en la trama, porque incluso aparece el mismísimo Julio Verne, jaja.
No vendría mal una nueva edición espectacular con los alucinantes paisajes que describe Verne, cuyos ojos nunca vieron el correr de este impresionante río.
Me gusta en particular un capítulo llamado "Respeto al Tapir" que básicamente habla de cómo nuestros aventureros fueron correteados por los indígenas piaroa al matar a un tapir al que habían confundido con una fiera.
"No solamente creen en los espíritus, sino que ven al Tapir como uno de sus antepasados, el más venerable y venerado de los antiguos piaroas. En el cuerpo de un tapir va alojarse el alma de un indio. De modo que un tapir menos es un alojamiento menos para aquellas almas, que corren la prohibición absoluta de acortar los días de un animal destinado a la honrosa misión de albergador".
Otro fragmento bien cinematográfico:
“Tras unas horas de descanso, los viajeros se pusieron nuevamente en marcha. Si la pendiente del suelo se acentuaba, el espesor del bosque no disminuía. Siempre los mismos árboles y las mismas zarzas. Costeando el Torrida se evitaban numerosos obstáculos a través de los matorrales, llenos de palmeras llenas. No había duda que al llegarla noche se había andado, salvo complicaciones, la distancia calculada por Jacques Helloch”.
“El bosque estaba muy animado. Millares de pájaros volaban de rama en rama, cantando a todo cantar. Los monos hacían cabriolas sobre las ramas, principalmente algunas parejas de esos aluates chillones, que no chillan durante el día, y reservan para la noche o la madrugada sus ensordecedores conciertos. Entre los volátiles, Germán Paterne tuvo la satisfacción de observar bandadas de guácharos o diabolinos, cuya presencia indicaba que se acercaban al litoral del Este. Turbados en su tranquilidad diurna, pues apenas si salen hasta la noche de las anfractuosidades rocosas, refugiábanse en la cima de las matacas, cuyas bayas, febrífugas como la corteza del coloradito, les sirven de alimento”.
