Wishing a beautiful day to all my dear friends!
Nokol Mallum is a humble yet highly nutritious green leafy dish that holds a cherished place in traditional Sri Lankan home cooking. Rich in iron, fiber, and antioxidants, Nokol leaves—also known as Chinese cabbage or “Aba kola”—are finely shredded and gently stir-fried with freshly grated coconut, onions, and a touch of aromatic spices to create a dish that is simple yet deeply satisfying.
This mallum makes a perfect and healthy side for rice and curry meals, especially for those looking for wholesome, plant-based nutrition. It beautifully combines taste and nourishment, making every meal complete with both flavor and wellness.
Materials Used.
Nokol 250g
A few finely chopped onions.
2 cloves of garlic, finely chopped.
1/2 Teaspoon of turmeric powder.
1/2 Cup of Grated Coconut.
Salt as needed.
2 Tablespoon of coconut oil.
1/2 Teaspoon of pepper powder.
A little lemon juice.
The cooking process as follows.
Let’s now get ready to prepare this dish. First, wash and clean the nokol tuber and its leaves thoroughly. Then finely slice them as shown below.
Now place a pan on the stove and add 2 tablespoons of coconut oil. Once the oil is heated, add chopped garlic, onions, the sliced nokol pieces, salt, and a bit of black pepper. Mix well and allow it to cook for a while until it softens slightly.
Now add the finely chopped nokol leaves, grated coconut, and a little bit of lime juice to the same pan. Cook for about 3 minutes, then remove from the stove.
Once the greens have softened and are well combined with the coconut and spices, your Nokol Mallum is ready to be served. This quick and easy preparation not only adds color and texture to your plate but also enriches your meal with natural goodness.
Celebrate the power of local greens with a warm, healthy Mallum that's perfect for any day!
