Is it possible to restore a piece of urban art using digital tools? That's the question I asked myself recently, while I was walking around my city and saw some worn out pieces of urban art.
My intention with this publication is to restore a little bit these works to give them back the shine and beauty they no longer exhibit today.
I clarify that none of these graffiti are mine, nor do I know their authors, these are simply photographs of art that was made many years ago and that I found in different areas of my city, San Felipe (Yaracuy), Venezuela.

¿Es posible restaurar una pieza de arte urbano usando herramientas digitales? Esa es la pregunta que me planteé hace poco, mientras paseaba por mi ciudad y vi algunas piezas gastadas de arte urbano.
Mi intención con esta publicación es restaurar un poco estas obras para devolverles el brillo y belleza que hoy ya no exhiben.
Aclaro que ninguno de estos graffitis son mios, tampoco conozco a sus autores, simplemente son fotografías de arte que fue hecho hace muchos años y que encontré en distintas áreas de mi ciudad, San Felipe (Yaracuy), Venezuela.
These works are very beautiful when they are freshly made, the problem is that they deteriorate easily when outdoors. The weather and time end up taking their toll and erase the traces of beauty that once characterized these works.
Estas obras son muy bonitas cuando están recien hechas, el problema es que se deterioran con facilidad al estar a la intemperie. El clima y el tiempo terminan pasando factura y borran los rastros de belleza que alguna vez caracterizó a estas obras.
Many of us consider this as a great art that not everyone can do; therefore, my intention with this series of publications that I plan to do is to remember those artists who, at the time, made really beautiful art and that, with the passing of time, has been deteriorating and fading from the concrete canvases in which they were once captured.
I must clarify that this art that I decided to photograph is very common around here; not the urban art on walls, no, but these worn drawings.
Muchos consideramos esto como un arte grandioso que no todos pueden realizar; por ello, mi intención con esta serie de publicaciones que planeo hacer es recordar a esos artistas que, en su momento, hicieron arte realmente hermoso y que, por el pasar del tiempo, se ha ido deteriorando y desvaneciendo de los lienzos de concreto en los que alguna vez estuvieron plasmados.
He de aclarar, que este arte que decidí fotografiar es muy común por acá; no el arte urbano en paredes, no, sino estos dibujos desgastados.
Is there no freshly made urban art in my city? Not really, or at least I haven't found any. I always come across these drawings that have been there for years, literally years without anyone doing any kind of retouching or anything to beautify them.
Of course, some drawings were made without any care and go unnoticed by many passersby, but there are others that at the time were true works of art that many would go to take pictures of just to have the memory that they were there.
¿Acaso no hay arte urbano recién hecho en mi ciudad? La verdad es que no, o al menos yo no he encontrado. Siempre me encuentro con estos dibujos que tienen años, literalmente años allí sin que nadie les haga algún tipo de retoque o algo para embellecerlos.
Por supuesto, algunos dibujos fueron hechos sin ningún esmero y pasan por alto para muchos transeuntes, pero hay otros que en su momento fueron verdaderas obras de arte a las que muchos iban a fotografiarse solamente para tener el recuerdo de que estuvieron allí.
And the authors of these drawings, where are they? One could blame them for not caring about their works of art, but the truth is that the economic situation in my country (Venezuela) sometimes forces these artists to leave their works in the past, because they cannot afford the materials to retouch or redo their drawings.
¿Y los autores de estos dibujos? ¿En donde estan? Uno podría achacarles el hecho de que no se preocupen por sus obras de arte, pero lo cierto es que la situación económica de mi país (Venezuela) a veces obliga a que estos artistas dejen en el pasado sus obras, pues no pueden costearse los materiales para retocar o volver a hacer sus dibujos.
In spite of everything, there are still memories of a time when such artists could express themselves freely in the endless empty murals here in my city. Therefore, I wanted to take one of those works to try to answer the question I pose at the beginning of the post.
Can these works be restored with digital tools? The answer is yes. On this occasion I will use Photoshop to try to bring back to life a graffiti that is quite worn out, such is the case of the one I show below:
A pesar de todo, aún quedan los recuerdos de una época en la que este tipo de artistas podía expresarse libremente en los interminables murales vacíos que había aquí en mi ciudad. Por ello, quise tomar una de esas obras para intentar responder la pregunta que planteo al comienzo de la publicación.
¿Se pueden restaurar estas obras con herramientas digitales? La respuesta es sí. En esta ocasión usaré Photoshop para tratar de traer a la vida un graffiti que está bastante gastado, tal es el caso del que muestro a continuación:
The previous photographs show graffiti that still retain part of their original design, with some exceptions; however, in this one it is still distinguishable enough to be restored, so I began the process, creating a white canvas on which to make the strokes.
Las anteriores fotografías muestran graffitis que aún conservan parte de su diseño original, salvo alguna excepción; sin embargo, en esta aún se distingue lo suficiente como para poder restaurarlo, así que comencé con el proceso, creando un lienzo blanco sobre el cual hacer los trazos.
Then I began to give more volume to them, thickening some parts that needed it.
Luego comencé a dar mayor volumen a los mismos, engrosando algunas partes que lo necesitaban.
With the color palette I found a base color similar to the one used by the artist in his work, so I applied it throughout the body of the graffiti.
Con la paleta de colores encontré un color base similar al que usó el artista en su obra, así que lo apliqué en todo el cuerpo del graffiti.
After this I applied other lighter colors and a visibly darker color on top, a visibly marked color division.
Después de esto apliqué otros colores mas claros y un color visiblemente más oscuro en la parte superior, una división de color visiblemente marcada.
The next thing was to add shadows to the side parts, that area that creates the 3D effect of the drawing, which is supposed to have shadows to create depth.
Lo siguiente fue agregar sombras a las partes de los costados, esa zona que crea el efecto 3D del dibujo, que se supone que debe tener sombra para crear profundidad.
Finally, I added the same details that the author placed in his work. Although not all the elements are distinguishable, I tried to be as accurate as possible to respect the original work.
Finalmente agregué los mismos detalles que el autor colocó en su obra. Aunque no se distinguen todos los elementos, intenté ser lo más exacto posible para respetar la obra original.
The last thing was a detail that the author himself placed around the letters, a sort of green stroke that contrasts with the whole drawing but gives it a special touch.
Lo último fue un detalle que el propio autor colocó alrededor de las letras, una suerte de trazo verde que hace contraste con todo el dibujo pero que le da un toque especial.
This way the restoration was finished. Then I placed the original background to see how it looked and the result was great.
De esta manera quedó terminada la restauración. Luego la coloqué el fondo original a ver que tal quedaba y el resultado me pareció genial.

I do not know the names of the artists who made these drawings, I do not know who they are, but to them go my respect and appreciation, because despite the time, the weather, the deterioration, their art still remains in these concrete canvases...
