Yesterday @bluemist invited us to make a post about who our 3 favorite witnesses are, and before we start... I ask you, do you know what a witness is?
Maybe yes, maybe no, but since you are reading this, what do you think about learn a little more about Hive and the important work these people do?
I like to know as much as I can about the platform and I gave myself the task of investigating which are the functions that the witnesses should carry out in order to share them with you, mainly because I know that there is a lot of ignorance about it. I found the information in this page and in the whitepaper, so I share with you a small summary of the reading.

El día de ayer @bluemist nos invitó a hacer un post para contarles quiénes son nuestros 3 witnesses favoritos, y antes de comenzar... yo te pregunto a ti, ¿sabes qué es un witness?
Tal vez sí, tal vez no, pero ya que estás leyendo esto, ¿qué te parece si conocemos un poco más acerca de Hive y la labor tan importante que realizan estas personas?
En español, witness es testigo, así que a partir de ahora, les llamaremos así: testigos. A mí me gusta conocer lo más que pueda acerca de la plataforma y me di a la tarea de investigar cuales son las funciones que deben llevar a cabo los testigos para compartirlas con ustedes, principalmente porque sé que hay mucho desconocimiento al respecto. Las mismas, las encontré en esta página y en el whitepaper, así que a continuación les comparto un pequeño resumen de la lectura.
Who are the witnesses?
They are the people in charge of validating signatures and time stamping transactions including them in blocks.
What are the blocks and how are produced?
A block is a set of transactions composed by publications, votes, transfers, among others, that update the database. Blocks are produced through rounds, carried out by a mixture of 21 witnesses, the top 20 (by voting) and one more that is selected at random.
What do the top 20 witnesses do and how are they chosen?
The top of witnesses are chosen by the users of the platform, each one has the possibility to support up to 30 witnesses. Support is rated based on the total HP weight of those supporting them through individual approvals.
Those in the top 20 perform block validation operations, while the others classified in the following positions are part as a support. The number of validation opportunities is proportional to the support they receive.
What is the work of the witnesses?
The witnesses are in charge of managing the block producing nodes, so that they are tolerant to failures by applying a fail-over system. They are also responsible for adjusting the operating parameters of the blockchain, discuss proposals for improvement at the code level. Some witnesses maintain a public seed node, contribute to central repositories and finance the development of applications and infrastructure projects.
How are they rewarded?
When a block is produced, they obtain a rewarded for it. Likewise, if they don't produce a block, they aren't rewarded and may even be expelled.

Son los encargados de validar las firmas y las transacciones de sellado de tiempo (timestamping), incluyéndolas en bloques.
¿Qué son los bloques y cómo se producen?
Un bloque es un conjunto de transacciones compuesto por publicaciones, votos, transferencias, entre otros, que actualizan la base de datos. Los bloques se producen a través de rondas, llevadas a cabo por una mezcla de 21 testigos, los 20 principales (por votación) y un testigo de reserva que es seleccionado al azar.
Cada uno de ellos tiene un turno para producir un solo bloque a una tasa fija de un bloque cada 3 segundos. Si un testigo no produce un bloque en su franja horaria, entonces, se salta y el siguiente testigo produce el siguiente bloque.
¿Qué hacen los 20 de testigos principales y cómo son elegidos?
Los testigos son elegidos por los usuarios de la plataforma, cada uno tiene la posibilidad de brindar su apoyo hasta a 30 testigos. El apoyo se clasifica en base al peso total de HP de quienes los respaldan mediante las aprobaciones individuales.
Los que están en el top 20 realizan operaciones de validación de bloques, mientras que los testigos clasificados en las posiciones siguientes, son tratados como testigos de apoyo. El número de oportunidades de validar que reciben es proporcional al apoyo que reciben.
¿En qué consiste el trabajo de los testigos?
Los testigos se encargan de la gestión de los nodos productores de bloques, de forma tal que sean tolerantes a fallas aplicando un sistema de conmutación por error. Asimismo, se encargan de ajustar los parámetros de funcionamiento de la blockchain, discuten propuestas de mejora a nivel de código. Algunos testigos mantienen un nodo semilla público, contribuyen a repositorios centrales, financian el desarrollo de aplicaciones y proyectos de infraestructura.
¿Qué beneficios obtienen los testigos?
Al producir un bloque, el testigo es recompensado por ello. Asimismo, si un testigo no produce un bloque, no recibe recompensas e inclusive puede ser expulsado.

I chose this small selection based on the projects that I have observed that they carry out, which are worthy of admiration. However, I consider that all the witnesses are valuable because they contribute to the growth of the blockchain.

He is a witness I had the opportunity to meet shortly after joining Hive, thanks to a program on @rutablockchain's Discord.
It was in that program that I discovered what are a witness. I consider that he has done an incredible job as developed with the inclusion of tools in the platform as it is the case of HiveBuzz that motivates the users through the achievement of different badges, HiveSQL, Engage and Hive.NET.

Fue en ese programa que descubrí que era un testigo y considero que ha hecho un increíble trabajo como desarrollado con la inclusión de herramientas en la plataforma como es el caso de HiveBuzz que motiva a los usuarios a través del logro de diferentes insignias, HiveSQL, Engage y Hive.NET.

OCD (Original Content Decentralized) is a curation project in Hive that focuses on original content. It currently has an incubation program that provides support to new communities such as MakeUp Power.
I believe that their work motivates users to create original content and generate new initiatives and projects.

3SPEAK is a platform that allows sharing audiovisual content on Hive. One of its main features is that it fights against censorship, which allows us to express ourselves freely as long as the content does not incite violence or is illegal.
I think that the work he does is excellent and allows us all to have the opportunity to express ourselves not only in writing, but also through videos.
In addition, its founders have carried out interesting projects such as Hive leaders and the promotion of Hive in traditional social networks.
3SPEAK es una plataforma de vídeos que permite compartir contenido audiovisual en Hive, una de sus principales características es que lucha contra la censura, lo cual permite expresarnos libremente siempre que el contenido no incite a la violencia o sea ilegal.
Creo que es excelente el trabajo que realiza y que su trabajo permite que todos tengamos la oportunidad de expresarnos no solo de forma escrita, sino también a través de vídeos.
