You usually do not see what's going on behind. The attacker might try to attack you from behind and put you in a vulnerable position. Once someone grabs you from behind and pulls you up, you might find it difficult to defend yourself since your feet are not on the ground.
You cannot see behind unless you turn your head. Well, even without turning your head, sometimes you can see behind if there is some sort of mirror or reflection in front of you.
While you are walking, you might see that, be more careful. You can hear the sound when the attacker is getting close to you. Or, sometimes you might see something is about to happen. Situational awareness can help you a lot to defend yourself against attacking from behind.
As soon as you realize that something is wrong, you can take action immediately. You can do back kick and hit the attacker. In case the attacker is too close, you can do elbow strikes.
What is more difficult is, when you have no idea that you are being attacked and the moment you realize that, it's too late. Don't worry, still, you have options to make your move.
If the attacker has any weapon, you have to pay more attention to defend against that. Once you turn and make eye contact, you see the attacker's movement. Then it would be easier to fight for self defense.
People who attacked you from behind, they are afraid to attack you from the front side. Bad guys show they are brave, as a matter of fact, they are not. They just do not show it.
