In this opportunity, I give continuity to the series of the Embedded or Embedded Systems with Style, dedicating this post to the Development Methodology. A subject that I explain, starting from the general to the particular, dealing with the important formal points in this field.
En esta oportunidad, doy continuidad a la serie de los Sistemas Empotrados o Embebidos con Estilo, dedicando este post a la Metodología de Desarrollo. Asunto que explico, partiendo de lo general a lo particular, tratando los puntos importantes formales en este terreno.
It is important to mention that the content offered in this post is the product of my expertise in this area, which has allowed me to adapt trends to practical realities in the development of Embedded Systems (ES).
Es importante mencionar, que el contenido ofrecido en este post es producto de mi experticia en esta área, lo cual ha permitido adaptar tendencias a realidades prácticas en el desarrollo de Sistemas Empotrados (SE).

For ES design and development there is a need to guide methodologies, methods, and procedures, where three skills are required, hardware design, software design, and hardware and software integration (Alfonsi et al., 2015).
Para el diseño y desarrollo de SE existe la necesidad de orientar metodologías, métodos y procedimientos, donde se requieren tres habilidades, el diseño de hardware, diseño de software e integración hardware y software (Alfonsi et al., 2015).
There is a design trend from electronics and digital systems, focused on the development and assembly of hardware components, and in most cases, methodological aspects for a software specification that leads to an appropriate design are not considered.
Hay una tendencia de diseño desde la electrónica y sistemas digitales, centrada en lo relacionado con el desarrollo y el montaje de componentes de hardware, y en la mayoría de los casos, no son considerados aspectos metodológicos para una especificación de software que lleve a un diseño apropiado.
This is because embedded application design generally lacks or underestimates training in software development disciplines since the fundamental problem is to ensure that the program runs on the device.
Esto sucede, ya que en el diseño de aplicaciones empotradas, generalmente, presentan carencias formativas en disciplinas de desarrollo de software o la subestiman, ya que el problema fundamental es asegurarse de que el programa se ejecute en el dispositivo.
Another trend comes from the area of computing where ES typically has more limited resources than general-purpose ES, and in most cases, programming paradigms, such as object-oriented, hide the implementation details of the resources used from the programmer.
Otra tendencia, proviene del área de la computación donde típicamente los SE tienen recursos más limitados que los de propósito general, y en la mayoría de los casos, los paradigmas de programación, ejemplo el orientado a objetos, oculta al programador los detalles de implementación de los recursos utilizados.
Here the opposite occurs, the particularities of the hardware are minimized, sometimes leading to generalize them. Overlooking that the hardware has its restrictions and in the ES they must be very well defined for the final product.
Aquí ocurre lo contrario, se minimiza las particularidades del hardware, llevándola algunas veces a generalizarlas. Pasando por alto, que el hardware tiene sus restricciones y en los SE deben estar muy bien definidos para el producto final.
Of course, the above is still a topic of discussion, which would be interesting to engage in. However, the purpose of this post is to introduce my dear readers to methodologies for developing ES.
Por supuesto, lo anterior sigue siendo un tema de discusión, el cual sería interesante entablar. Sin embargo, el objetivo de este post es introducir a mis apreciados lectores, a metodologías para desarrollar SE.
Therefore, the methodological management to develop ES must be carefully managed by the involved actors, indistinctly, if they come from the Electronics and Digital Systems side or from the Computer Science side.
Entonces, el manejo metodológico para desarrollar SE debe ser manejado cuidadosamente por los actores involucrados, indistintamente, si provienen del lado de la Electrónica y Sistemas Digitales o, de la Computación.
In the development of an ES there are indisputable meeting points:
En el desarrollo de un SE hay puntos de encuentro indiscutibles:
This makes it necessary to take advantage of the strengths of Hardware Engineering, such as the possibility of performing concurrent processing or hybrid designs, and those that come from Software Engineering, not only from the point of view of the realization of Systems per se but also from the methodological part that leads to quality parameters.
Lo que hace necesario aprovechar las fortalezas de la Ingeniería de Hardware, como la posibilidad de realizar procesamiento concurrente o diseños híbridos y, las que provienen de la Ingeniería de Software, no solo, desde el punto de vista de la realización de Sistemas per se, sino, de la parte metodológica que conlleva a parámetros de calidad.
Of course, there are previous design experiences, which may or may not make use of computational tools, in any of the Hardware and Software design phases, respectively.
Por supuesto, hay experiencias previas de diseños, que pueden o no, hacer uso de herramientas computacionales, en cualquiera de las fases de diseño Hardware y Software, respectivamente.
Here I summarize the approaches currently used, although they are not the only ones. In fact, many are accompanied by tools to work on each phase and may have different criteria for their implementation.
Aquí hago una síntesis de los enfoques utilizados en la actualidad, no siendo los únicos. Inclusive, muchos vienen acompañados de herramientas para trabajar cada fase y pueden tener diferentes criterios para su implementación.
Having said that, at the developmental level, I present four approaches:
Dicho lo anterior, a nivel de desarrollo, les presento cuatro enfoques:
1. Conventional Approach
1. Enfoque Convencional
This approach highlight stages that cycle to achieve their operational objectives.
Este enfoque pone de manifiesto estadios que hacen ciclos para conseguir sus objetivos operacionales.
It begins with a description of the behavior that gives rise to the Functional Specification and Simulation, results with which the decision is made to establish the System Architecture, which provides the basis for the design of the hardware and software, which are evaluated against the established Architecture.
Da inicio con una descripción del comportamiento que da origen a la Especificación y Simulación Funcional, resultados con los cuales se toma la decisión de establecer la Arquitectura del Sistema, la cual da base para el diseño del hardware y software, los cuales se evalúan contra la Arquitectura establecida.
That is to say, there is a development cycle, from which the system exits once the specifications are met, passing to the Prototyping stage.
Es decir, hay un ciclo de desarrollo, del cual se sale una vez se cumpla con las especificaciones, pasado al estadio de Prototipado.
2. Hardware/Software Codesign
2. Codiseño Hardware/Software
An approach to optimize a design by partitioning the system into hardware and software components (using a top-down approach), considering specific quality factors.
Enfoque que permite optimizar un diseño mediante la partición del sistema en componentes hardware y software (usando un enfoque top-down), considerando factores de calidad específicos.
It starts from a specification and is designed independently of the architecture and subsequent implementation of the system (Ha and Teich, 2017).
Se parte de una especificación y se diseña de forma independiente a la arquitectura y posterior implementación del sistema (Ha y Teich, 2017)
3. Platform-based design
3. Diseño basado en Plataformas
Here, abstraction is used to hide the implementation details of various possible improvements in underlying layers. This approach reuses designs making it easy and fast to build SoCs with common features and their time to market is fast (Jerraya et al., 2006).
Aquí se utiliza la abstracción que oculta los detalles de la ejecución de varias posibles mejoras en capas subyacentes. Este enfoque reutiliza diseños propiciando construir fácil y rápidamente SoC con características comunes y su tiempo de comercialización sea rápido (Jerraya et al., 2006).
4. Component-based design
4. Diseño basado en Componentes
This approach allows reusing parts, hardware modules, and pieces of pre-made code to perform various tasks, leading to several benefits such as quality improvements, development cycle reduction, and higher return on investment (Taylor and Taylor, 2021).
Este enfoque permite reutilizar partes, módulos de hardware y piezas de código pre-elaborado para realizar diversas tareas, conllevando a diversos beneficios como las mejoras a la calidad, la reducción del ciclo de desarrollo y un mayor retorno sobre la inversión (Taylor y Taylor, 2021).
Likewise, to describe the ES Development Cycle, models already known in engineering are used, as pointed out by Taylor & Taylor (2021), Lacamare (2018), and Noergaard (2013), among others:
Asimismo, para describir el Ciclo de Desarrollo de los SE se usan modelos ya conocidos en la ingeniería, como los señalan Taylor y Taylor (2021), Lacamare (2018) y, Noergaard (2013), entre otros:
The Big Bang model: the essential is not to plan or process the requirements before or during the development of the system.
El modelo de Gran Explosión (Bing-bang model): lo esencial es no planear o procesar los requisitos antes o durante el desarrollo del sistema.
The Code-and-fix model: it does not define the formal processes before starting development, but it does define the requirements.
El modelo Codificar-Arreglar (Code-and-fix model): no define los procesos formales antes de empezar el desarrollo, pero si los requisitos.
The Waterfall model: a model that has defined processes to develop the system; the result of one step serves as input for the next.
El modelo de Cascada (Waterfall model): modelo que cuenta con procesos definidos para desarrollar el sistema; el resultado de un paso sirve como entrada para el siguiente.
The evolutionary development model: activities such as specification, development, and validation are intertwined. An initial system is rapidly developed from abstract specifications and refined based on customer requests to produce a system that satisfies the objectives.
El modelo de desarrollo evolutivo: se entrelazan las actividades como la especificación, el desarrollo y la validación. Un sistema inicial se desarrolla rápidamente a partir de especificaciones abstractas y se refina basándose en las peticiones del cliente para producir un sistema que satisfaga los objetivos.
The Component-Based Engineering model: it is based on the existence of a significant number of reusable components. The main development process focuses on integrating existing components into the system rather than developing them from scratch.
El modelo de Ingeniera basada en Componentes: se basa en la existencia de un número significativo de componentes reutilizables. El proceso principal de desarrollo se centra en integrar los componentes existentes dentro del sistema más que en desarrollarlos desde cero.
The following is an explanation of the Conventional Approach based on the academic resource for the classroom sessions I teach (Alfonsi, 2020). In a later post, I will present a development of SE with this approach.
A continuación, se explica el Enfoque Convencional tomando como base el recurso académico para las sesiones de clase que imparto (Alfonsi, 2020). En un post posterior presentaré un desarrollo de SE con este enfoque.

This approach highlight stages that cycle to achieve its operational objectives.
Este enfoque pone de manifiesto estadios que hacen ciclos para conseguir sus objetivos operacionales.
It starts with a description of the behavior that gives rise to the Functional Specification and Simulation, results with which the decision is made to establish the System Architecture. From there, a development cycle is checked against it.
Da inicio con una descripción del comportamiento que da origen a la Especificación y Simulación Funcional, resultados con los cuales se toma la decisión de establecer la Arquitectura del Sistema. A partir de allí un ciclo de desarrollo que se coteja con la Arquitectura.
The stages of the approach are explained below:
A continuación se explican los estadios del enfoque:
Functional Simulation: it is a specification of the system behavior with formal models, which can be integrated with other simulation and/or emulation tools.
Simulación Funcional: es una especificación del comportamiento del sistema con modelos formales, pudiéndose integrar con otras herramientas de simulación y/o emulación.
Currently, there are free or proprietary simulation tools or software that allow modeling, simulation, and analysis of dynamic systems, i.e. systems whose outputs and internal states change over time.
Actualmente, existen herramientas o software de simulación libres o propietarios, que permiten modelar, simular y analizar sistemas dinámicos, esto es sistemas cuyas salidas y estados internos cambien con el tiempo.
They have a graphical environment, where a block model of the system is created, using standard block libraries and an editor that allows interconnecting them. It must allow the implementation of models in continuous time, discrete-time, mixed (discrete and continuous), finite state machines (with hierarchy and concurrency), and flowcharts. Examples of these are Scilab, Octave, Matlab, Labview, among others.
Poseen un entorno gráfico, donde se crea un modelo en bloques del sistema, utilizando librerías de bloques estándar y un editor que permite interconectarlos. Debe permitir implementar modelos en tiempo continuo, en tiempo discreto, mixto (discreto y continuo), máquinas de estado finito (con jerarquía y concurrencia) y flowcharts. Ejemplos de elos, Scilab, Octave, Matlab, Labview, entre otros.
The decision of the Architecture: here it is necessary to have clear the different modalities of architectures in the ES, which can be consulted in Embedded Systems with Style. Part Three: Embedded Software Architectures.
Decisión de la Arquitectura: aquí se debe tener claro las distintas modalidades de arquitecturas en los SE, las cuales puede consultarlas en Embedded Systems with Style. Part Three: Embedded Software Architectures.
It is advisable to apply the principle of modularity. The system is divided into components, called modules, which are integrated to satisfy the requirements of the problem.
Es aconsejable aplicar el principio de modularidad. El sistema se divide en componentes, llamados módulos, que se integran para satisfacer los requisitos del problema.
And its characteristics are Modular decomposition capability. Ability to use modular components (reusability). Modular comprehensibility: if a module can be understood as an autonomous unit (without references to other modules) it will be easier to build and change. Continuity. Parallel development of hardware and software tends to be encouraged.
Y sus características son: Capacidad de descomposición modular. Capacidad de empleaos de componentes modulares (reutilización). Capacidad de comprensión modular: si un módulo se puede comprender como una unidad autónoma (sin referencias a otros módulos) será más fácil de construir y de cambiar. Continuidad. Se tiende a fomentar el desarrollo paralelo de Hardware y Software.
Hardware Development: here each module is specified in detail and interconnection. That is to say, the microprocessing, digital, circuit, power, and other systems specified in the Hardware Architecture are unveiled.
Desarrollo de Hardware: aquí se especifica cada módulo en detalle e interconexión. Es decir, se develan los sistemas de microprocesamiento, digitales, circuitales, de potencia y otros que estén especificados en la Arquitectura de Hardware.
Software Development: stage that appears if we are in the presence of a microprocessor or microcontroller-based system.
Desarrollo de Software: estadio que aparece si estamos en presencia de un sistema de microprocesamiento o basado en microcontroladores.
It is the design of the program structure that will later be stored in the processor memory.
Es el diseño de la estructura del programa que luego se alojará en la memoria del procesador.
The trend is to use a Global Software Structure (GSS), which according to Pressman & Maxim (2019) and, Sommerville (2018), is the set of provisions, rules, and patterns that constrain the design and realization of software, based on which problems can be solved with sufficient detail to allow its codification.
La tendencia que se tiene es usar una Estructura Global de Software (EGS), que según Pressman y Maxim (2019) y, Sommerville (2018), es el conjunto de disposiciones, reglas y patrones que restringen el diseño y la realización de un software, con base a las cuales se puedan resolver problemas con suficientes detalles para permitir su codificación.
Evaluation: the functional structure is explored, taking care of the system behavior from its structure, being able to detect Hardware and Software inconsistencies, if any, comparing it with its Architecture.
Evaluación: se explora la estructura funcional, atendiendo el comportamiento del sistema desde su estructura, pudiendo detectar inconsistencias del Hardware y Software, si las hubiere, cotejándola con su Arquitectura.
These weaknesses must be solved for the implementation of the application. In addition, combinations of the variables involved are studied to compare the one that presents the best result concerning the set of selected metrics. Finally, it is a process of refinement, and once completed, it will go to the prototyping phase.
Dichas debilidades deben ser resueltas para la implementación de la aplicación. Además, se estudian combinaciones de las variables involucradas para cotejar la que presenta un mejor resultado respecto al conjunto de métricas seleccionadas.

En fin, es un proceso de refinamiento y una vez cumplido pasará a la fase de prototipado.
Prototype: the stage where the final product is shown, which will be tested according to pre-established procedures not only by the customer but also by those agreed in standards of different application areas. It is worth noting that the quality guidelines are observed.
Prototipo: estadio donde se pone de manifiesto el producto final, que se someterá a las pruebas según procedimientos preestablecidos no solo por el cliente, sino también, por los acordados en estándares de diferentes áreas de aplicación. Vale la pena señalar, que se observan los lineamientos de calidad.

Here, the idea of introducing in the ES development the basis for the use of disciplined methods oriented to obtain a product under methodologies that should lead to better results with quality is defended.
Aquí, se defiende la idea de introducir en el desarrollo de SE las bases para la utilización de métodos disciplinados orientados a la obtención de un producto bajo metodologías que debe conducir a mejores resultados con calidad.
I took the opportunity to give the necessary conceptualization about approaches and development cycles. In addition, I explained the Conventional Approach.
Aproveché para dar la conceptualización necesaria acerca de enfoques y ciclos de desarrollo. Además, de explicar el Enfoque Convencional.
