For those unfamiliar, the KE Ratio measures the total amount of author and curator rewards received relative to the amount of HP (Hive Power) staked in an account. In simple terms, it’s a rough signal of whether your account has "earned its keep" in the ecosystem based on your stake and activity.
When I looked at mine, I saw a 0.88.
Honestly, it was a bit of a gut check.
That number essentially means that I’ve earned less in author/curator rewards than I’ve staked into the Hive ecosystem over nearly eight years, stretching all the way back to the early days of STEEM. While I’ve long known this journey was more about community and creativity than raw ROI, seeing it quantified so clearly made me pause.
To add to the sting, this realization came shortly after I decided to power down a chunk of my HP to expand my positions in Splinterlands, a part of the ecosystem where I currently feel more connected and strategically aligned. If anything, this KE Ratio gave me some confirmation that it was probably the right call.
Still, I can’t ignore the mixed emotions.
I've been posting nearly every single day for years now. I’ve shown up, contributed, engaged, and experimented. But the truth is—I haven’t quite broken through the way I hoped to. My content hasn’t reached the audience size I imagined. The growth has been slow, and perhaps my consistency hasn’t been matched with enough effort in community interaction or content promotion. I own that.
But this also brings up a larger question:
What is the real intention behind the KE Ratio?
Is it to motivate users to be more strategic? To spotlight inefficiencies? Or to subtly nudge underperforming accounts to rethink their approach—or even their level of involvement?
I’m not entirely sure what viewers are supposed to take away from someone’s KE Ratio, but if nothing else, it’s a sobering mirror. One that doesn’t just reflect your stake and earnings—it reflects the impact and visibility of your voice in this decentralized world.
Despite the sobering nature of this metric, I’m not quitting. Not by a long shot. But I do think it’s time to reassess my approach—maybe experiment more, engage more directly with other creators, collaborate, and continue building value in ways that feel aligned with my interests and skills.
Because in the end, my journey here isn’t defined by a single ratio.
It’s defined by showing up.
And I still plan to do just that.
