Jan Hendrik Oort was born in Franeker, Friesland, Netherlands, on the 28th April 1900. His parents were wealthy farmers there.
After having his higher education at Groningen University, Germany, Oort proceeded to Britain and U.S.A. and studied in famous universities there. Next he served at the University of Leiden.
He became the president of the International Astronomical Union from 1958 to 1961.
He originated the generally accepted theory of the origin of comets, and that place of origin is known as the Oort cloud now.
He is most famous for his pioneering work in the study of the rotation of our Galaxy.
Oort passed away in Leiden, Netherlands, on the 5th November 1992.
