⛵ Setting a New Course?
This account—dormant for seven years—missed out on so much great content and sailors who passed by—never finding a place to dock. Many said goodbye, but those with strong bonds stayed on the platform. Who knows, some might still return, and new sailors are bound to find their way onto Hive.
⚓️ Why the Inactivity?
For a while I wasn't sure if I should try to revive this initiative for several reasons:
- First of all, I haven't sailed in over 5 years, and have lost some of the previous confidence I had to call myself a sailor.
After moving to from Miami to Ecuador—and with Covid—sailing became out of reach.
I also don't know any other sailors, let alone captains with sailboats who need crew members.
Another setback is that I now have to relearn all the terminology, this time in Spanish—an achievable goal, but without sailing opportunities on the horizon, I just haven’t been motivated enough.
- Second reason was Work. When the bull-market ended back in 2018, many left crypto and the activity—then on Steem—started to dry out. Those of us who didn't escape with a considerable loot had to find jobs and return to the fiat world. Even now that I'm getting myself more and more back into Hive, and I work from our half-constructed home, I still have projects and deadlines to meet.
Still, as Charles Buxton said:
“You will never 'find' time. You must make it.”
I know, right?—Captain obvious—but a captain non the less.
But this is by no means a sob story—I'm very happy with my life—Living in paradise, building our dream home from scratch, raising 4 adorable puppers, riding our horses, doing archery, teaching astronomy, making new friends, hiking and challenging myself at every chance I get. Its just that...
🔭 A Glimpse into the Past...
There is an idealized version of me somewhere to the starboard of my ego— fearless adrenaline junkie, flying above water at 20+ knots on an International Moth... And nothing else matters 🌊 I can see it...
But that's called "a do-over fantasy", and in reality sailing was something I tried once in my 20's on a whim, and didn't really embraced it properly until I was in my 30's.
I did most of my sailing between 2016 - 2020. I participated in every regatta that my captain friends called me for, sometimes sailing solo for hours to our race destination while the Capt. rested. I helped a few newbie liveaboards to take out their boat for practice, refuel and maintenance. With a crew of 4—including my husband and I—we helped transport a 35 footer down the Indian River in FL, and the list goes on.
Bottom line is that I took every opportunity that came, and my sailing enthusiasm grew with every experience gained. I wanted to share this passion here by opening a portal for sailing content—and that is how @knOt was born.
...a Vision Moving Forward ⛵️
I don't know when I'm going to call myself a sailor again... But seeing other prominent sailor Hiveans like @zekepickleman, who also did't sail for over 5 years (until this summer that is), told me that I wasn't the only one 'stranded'. Now, some invisible force is drawing me back to this project. I wish to restore @knOt's spirit and re-establish the initiative to help sailors find each other's content. I want to see them thrive and inspired readers to pick-up sailing as a lifestyle.
So Yes, @knOt is back! 🤘
And my first task to get this place re-launched, is to:
🔎 Find all active sailors on Hive and introduce them in a post. If YOU are one, please let me know in the comments.
✍️ Launch a weekly curation project — that will spotlight all the best sailing and sailing-adjacent content.
🌍 Start a maritime-themed geo-quiz—A weekly challenge open to all Hiveans—and especially fun for well-traveled sailors familiar with the world’s coastlines and shores.
Future Plans
As this community continues to grow, there will be more contests to boost engagement, and other initiatives that are still on the drawing table.
