While Formula 1 is undoubtedly the pinnacle of racing and engineering, it always felt like a sport better enjoyed from the couch than from the grandstands. The high ticket prices and international locations didn’t make it easy for a casual fan, especially one with a family. But recently, that changed.
Formula E, the all-electric racing championship, made its way to the U.S.—and more specifically, to Miami. I had heard of the series and caught a few highlights online, but this was the first time it felt accessible. The ticket prices were much more reasonable compared to F1 events, and that sealed the deal: we decided to give it a try as a family outing.
And I’m so glad we did.
From the moment we arrived, it was clear that Formula E has crafted an experience that’s more than just the race. The fan village was filled with interactive exhibits, cutting-edge automotive tech, games, and even racing simulators—which, for a gaming family like ours, was an instant hit. It made the whole event feel less like a traditional sporting event and more like a festival around innovation and entertainment.
Yes, it was hot. And yes, we forgot sunscreen. So we avoided the heat as much as possible, finding our way to the stands just minutes before the race began. But once the cars hit the track, the energy shifted.
The race was intense. With all the cars so close together, it felt like anything could happen at any moment. The electric engines might not scream like an F1 car, but the strategy, the tight racing, and the technical skill of the drivers made it thrilling. Every overtake felt risky, every second of delay felt costly, and the final laps had us holding our breath. Most cars crossed the finish line within seconds of each other—one of the most exciting finishes I’ve ever seen live.
We’re still learning the rules of the Formula E championship—there are definitely some unique features like Attack Mode and energy management that make it different from F1—but that’s part of the fun. It feels like a sport that’s evolving, just like its fanbase.
After this experience, there’s no doubt that attending more races is in our family’s future. Formula E might not have the same historic prestige as Formula 1 (yet), but what it does have is approachability, excitement, and a strong focus on the future of racing. And if you ask me, that’s a pretty great place to start.
