Raphael one of the finest artists of the High Renaissance, was born in Urbino, Italy in 1483. His father was a painter. The father saw artistic talents in his son and taught him the basics of the great art in childhood, at home.
At 17 he went to Perugino and started to master painting. Raphael was approaching adulthood while the influence on the contemporary art world, of Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci was apparent.
For several years he lived in Florence where the two great masters were working, and studied their work closely. Leonardo’s influential ‘Sfumato Style’ can be seen in much of Raphael’s work during this period.
Though he had an innate ability to absorb the innovations of other artists, he did not mimic their style, but understood and developed their techniques in such a way to express his own vision.
In 1508, Raphael was summoned to Rome by the Pope who commissioned him to decorate the four ‘Stanze’ or rooms of the Sistine Chapel. He only completed two of these but the first one ‘Stanza della Segnatura’ gave him the chance to exercise his skills to the full. The room contains two large frescos namely the ‘School of Athens’ and the ‘Disputa’ both of which show Raphael’s mastery of perspective.
While he was working in the rooms of the Sistine Chapel, Michelangelo too was working on the ceiling of the same chapel. As there was some considerable professional rivalry between the two artists they ignored and kept away from each other minding their own business.
In his last years he became the architect to St Peter’s Church, Rome. He passed away in Rome in 1520.
‘The Nymph Galatea’, ‘La Belle Jardiniere’ and ‘Sistine Madonna’ are the other major works by Raphael.
