I had a cunning plan while out on a run the other day. I’m trying to come back from an injury that has side-lined me for a couple of weeks, so I’m keeping the mileage a lot lower than normal. I was thinking that I’d make a couch to 5km video series for people who want to get into running.
But that’s been done to death. Every man and his dog has done that. What makes your videos different? - I hear you ask.
Well, here’s the plan.
The target audience is people who are not ‘runner type people’. People who would never identify themselves as runners, even if they started running. Elderly people, very overweight people, tall skinny people with legs like giraffes that seem to have a mind of their own, hamsters who sit staring at their wheel thinking “If only I could get on there and make it go…” Or people with disabilities or injuries that standard plans just don’t work for.
I want to make the whole process easy, fun, and fast, without a bunch of pain. This largely involves telling them how I started running and showing them why the way I did things was so wrong ;-)
I want to also take them through the mental side of running – what your body and brain is trying to do to you. How to overcome the mental hurdles and train yourself to control your body, not let your body control you.
I have learned a lot over the past 20 odd months of running that I think would help people not fall into the same traps that I encountered. And because I’m still so new at this, the memories of how things went wrong are still fresh and relevant.
I think having someone who is still working on getting running right, who is still making mistakes, as a coach (I use that in the loosest possible meaning of the term) is probably more relatable than someone who is young, fit and athletic.
So my questions to you are –
What points do you think I need to cover or put emphasis on in the videos?
Remember this is for people who (at the moment) can’t even run 1 km let alone 5km. So we need to keep things really simple. My goal for those that get all the way through is to be able to run for 5km non-stop. This is not training for their first 5km race. This is the first step towards developing the habits and techniques to start training for their first 5km race.What advise did you get that really helped you when you first started running?
