With a little time and curiosity on my side, I decided to explore the area and see what other options were around. That’s when I stumbled upon a couple of local diners—and I’m so glad I did.
Growing up, diners were a mainstay of our family road trips. They offered a warm, welcoming vibe and no-frills comfort food that hit the spot, especially after long drives. My mind instantly flashed back to plates stacked with pancakes, fluffy waffles, and perfectly golden French toast drenched in syrup. Those were the days of no calorie counting—just joy and flavor.
But now, on a low-carb lifestyle, my order looked a little different. I skipped the sugary carbs and leaned into the hearty diner classics—eggs and bacon. Simple, savory, and somehow always just right. There’s something about diner eggs and bacon that tastes better than anywhere else. Maybe it's the flat-top grill. Maybe it's nostalgia. Either way, it worked.
The coffee, too, was exactly how I remembered it—fresh, uncomplicated, and always flowing. Not fancy, not flavored, just strong enough to give you a solid start to your day.
After that first diner visit, I didn’t look back. For the rest of the trip, I made these diners my go-to for breakfast and even some light lunches. Sandwiches turned into bun-less protein-packed meals, and salads were fresh and satisfying. The charm of the staff, the locals chatting around me, and the warm, unpretentious atmosphere reminded me why diners always had a special place in my memory.
Back home, we don’t have many diners like this anymore. But this experience has me thinking: on future road trips with my family, I want to make it a point to stop at local diners again. It’s a great way to support small businesses, enjoy familiar comforts, and—more importantly—create new memories around food we love, just like the ones I made when I was a kid.
