Why do we feel disappointed? To answer that question, one could spend hours analyzing and intertwining feelings with different situations in life. Over the years, I have realized that, when I feel disappointed, it is because I always tend to build values/virtues that are not really there in the situation or people. There are many things we can feel disappointed about, but for me they boil down to two: achievement situations and people.
¿Por qué nos sentimos decepcionados? para responder esa pregunta, se podría pasar horas analizando y entrelazando sentimiento con las diferentes situaciones de la vida. Con el pasar de los años, me he dado cuenta que, cuando me siento decepcionado es porque siempre suelo construir valores/virtudes que realmente no están en la situación o personas. Hay muchas cosas por las cuales nos podemos sentir decepcionados, pero para mí se resumen en dos: situaciones de logro y personas.

By achievement situations, I mean those things we do to reach a goal. It is normal to feel disappointed when we do not achieve something, when we try many times and the result is not what we expected. It happens to me when I practice pastry recipes, I try to make a cream and after trying several times, I fail to make it as it should be and I feel disappointed, accompanied by frustration and sadness, feelings that go hand in hand. In this particular situation, after calming down, I start to evaluate what went wrong and try again, because I know that, if we stay in disappointment, it can lead us down dark paths.
There are many situations that can be brought up, but in the end they are similar, in the sense that we do not achieve the goal, we do not achieve what we have in mind, what we are doing is not the same as what we have learned and so on, an endless number of situations that lead us to feel disappointed for not achieving that goal that in the beginning has filled us with happiness, because if there is no happiness, hope and perseverance, it would not be a feeling.
Con situaciones de logro, me refiero a esas cosas que hacemos para alcanzar un objetivo. Es normal sentirse decepcionados cuando no logramos algo, cuando lo intentamos muchas veces y el resultado no es el esperado. Me sucede cuando practico recetas de pastelería, intento hacer una crema y luego de intentar varias veces, no logro hacerla como debe ser y me siento decepcionado, acompañado de frustración y tristeza, sentimientos que van de la mano. En esta situación en particular, luego de calmarme, comienzo a evaluar qué cosas salieron mal y vuelvo a intentarlo, porque sé que, si nos quedamos en la decepción, nos puede llevar por senderos oscuros.
Hay muchas situaciones que se pueden traer a colación, pero al final son similares, en el sentido de que no logramos el objetivo, no logramos eso que tenemos en mente, lo que estamos haciendo no nos queda igual lo aprendido y así, un sin finde situaciones que nos lleva a sentirnos decepcionados de no lograr ese objetivo que en un principio nos ha llenado de felicidad, porque si antes no hay felicidad, esperanza y perseveración, no sería un sentimiento.

Disappointment is strongest with people. Many say they don't suffer from this because they don't expect anything from people. Whenever I read or hear that, I am left reflecting and analyzing why people say that and what I believe is because they don't give their all when they are friends, boyfriends, husbands and all similar. I also think that you feel disappointed in people when you add values to them that they don't really have. When you feel good next to a person, you usually add feelings and values that you don't really know if that other person has them and when the true values of that person come to light and you realize that he/she is not as you expected, then that is when disappointment comes.
This feeling for me is a teacher, it reminds me that I should not give of besides, because I am usually a person who sleeps peacefully at night, because I fulfill my duties as a friend. I am one of those people who congratulate others on their birthday, when those other people do not congratulate me. That is the first alarm to realize that I should not give too much. I am one of those people who send good wishes when a new year begins, write or call to know how people are, even if they don't do it with me. These are other signs to realize that it is a one-way friendship and that later it can turn into a disappointment.
La decepción es más fuerte con las personas. Muchos dicen que no sufren de esto porque no esperan nada de las personas. Siempre que leo o escucho eso, me quedo reflexionando y analizando porque las personas dicen eso y lo que creo es porque no lo dan todo cuando son amigos, novios, esposos y todo lo parecido. También considero que uno se siente decepcionado de las personas, cuando les agregas valores que realmente no tienen. Cuando te sientes bien al lado de una persona, sueles agregar sentimientos y valores que realmente no sabes si esa otra persona los tiene y cuando sale a luz los verdaderos valores de esa persona y te das cuenta de que no es como esperabas, entonces es ahí cuando viene la decepción.
Este sentimiento para mi es un maestro, me recuerda que no debo dar de además, porque suelo ser una persona que duerme tranquilo por las noches, porque cumplo con mis deberes como amigo. Soy de las personas que felicita a otros por su cumpleaños, cuando esas otras personas no me felicitan. Esa es la primera alarma para darme cuenta de que no debo dar de además. Soy de las personas que manda buenos deseos cuando comienza un año nuevo, escribe o llama para saber cómo están, aunque eso no lo hagan conmigo. Son otras señales para uno darse cuenta de que es una amistad unidireccional y que luego puede convertirse en una decepción.

Of course, this is speaking in general terms, but when you are that kind of person who is always giving, it is normal that in the mind we build bonds that are not really there. You just feel good talking to those people and we are there to support you, even though that friendship has not really been reciprocated. In this kind of situations with people and all its variants, is when I feel most disappointed, that can even make me doubt if I have been a bad person, but it is part of the whirlwind of negative feelings that usually come.
Luckily, I have always been a pretty positive person, even more than I usually tolerate in other people and that has allowed me to quickly overcome any negative feelings, turn the page and continue being the way I am, without changing those good aspects that allow me to be a better friend or a better person to those around me. That positive attitude makes me see that it was just a passing thing and it is time to continue with good spirits and using those energies to grow.
Claro está, esto hablando en términos generales, pero cuando eres ese tipo de persona que suele dar siempre, es normal que en la mente construyamos lazos que realmente no están. Simplemente uno se siente bien hablando con esas personas y estamos ahí para apoyar, aunque realmente no ha sido reciproca esa amistad. En este tipo de situaciones con personas y todas sus variantes, es cuando más me siento decepcionado, eso puede hacer que incluso me ponga a dudar si he sido una mala persona, pero es parte del torbellino de sentimientos negativos que suelen venir.
Por suerte, siempre he sido una persona bastante positiva, incluso más de que suelo tolerar en otras personas y eso ha permitido que supere rápidamente cualquier sentimiento negativo, pase la página y continuar siendo como soy, sin cambiar esos aspectos buenos que me permiten ser mejor amigo o mejor persona para con aquellos que me rodean. Esa actitud positiva me hace ver que simplemente era algo pasajero y toca continuar con buen ánimo y utilizando esas energías para crecer.

I remember my university days, where being a good student meant being surrounded by people interested in doing well in their studies, because they needed to pass their coursework. The funny thing is that some people, instead of asking for help directly, begin to pretend to be friends, start to share things, to look for me to talk, to invite me to parties or meetings and thus, begin to force a relationship that only has one goal: to achieve what they want, but they forget that on the other side there is also a human being, a person who feels.
I believe that it is impossible not to feel disappointed in people, no matter how much people say that they do not expect anything from anyone. It may be in a few months or years, when situations change, when lies or mistrust begin, sooner or later disappointment comes. The issue is what we do with that feeling, if we feed it with other negative feelings or we use it as a carbon to keep moving forward. I have learned to prepare a good coal with that feeling and when I look back, I feel good for tasting what situations or people have caused me that feeling, because if not, I would not be what I am now.
Recuerdo mis épocas de universidad, donde ser buen estudiando, era estar rodeado de personas interesadas en salir bien, porque necesitaban pasar las materias. Lo curioso del asunto, es ver que algunas personas, en vez de pedir ayuda directamente, comienzan a fingir que son amigos, comienzan a compartir cosas, a buscarme para hablar, a invitarme a fiestas o reuniones y así, comienzan a forzar una relación que solo tiene un objetivo: lograr los que ellos quieren, pero se olvidan que del otro lado hay un ser humano también, una persona que siente.
Yo considero que es imposible no sentirse decepcionado de las personas, por más que uno diga que no esperamos nada de nadie. Puede ser en unos meses o en años, cuando las situaciones cambian, cuando comienzan las mentiras o la desconfianza, tarde o temprano la decepción llega. El tema está en que hacemos con ese sentimiento, si lo alimentamos con otros sentimientos negativos o lo utilizamos de carbón para seguir avanzando hacia a delante. Yo he aprendido a preparar un buen carbón con ese sentimiento y cuando miro hacia atrás, me siento bien por sabor que situaciones o personas me han causado ese sentimiento, porque si no, no fuera lo que soy ahora.

It sounds easy, it really isn't. It takes time to grab hold of something negative in our lives and turn it into energy that propels us forward, and if not, we can always put both feet on the ground and push ourselves forward. I like to give it my all, I don't care if disappointment comes at the end, doing so allows me to be at peace with myself.
Suena fácil, realmente no lo es. Toma tiempo lograr agarrar algo negativo en nuestras vidas y convertirlo en energía que nos impulse hacia adelante y sino, siempre podemos colocar los dos pies sobre el fondo e impulsarnos. Me gusta darlo todo, no me importa si al final llega la decepción, el hacerlo me permite estar en paz conmigo mismo.
