Almost everybody heard about ID company. The company that created games like Doom, Rage, Prey and Quake! I never played Quake 1, but when i first played in Quake 2 i was in heaven. Killing so many enemies, had so many weapons, gore and guts... that was it... that was QUAKE 2! I love Serious Sam series, so it was obvious i will loved that game too.
As far as I know Quake 2 was not a sequel to the first game, but as I mentioned before, I never played the first game.
Quake 2 is very dark and bloody science-fiction. Our enemies are hybrid of people and different kind of weapon? They want to conquer every possible planet. It was unfortunate that they found the Earthlings who, in gratitude, decided to attack their planet. The attack, unfortunately, is not successful, and the player as a one-man army has to defeat a whole lot of enemies.
We learn this from a short Intro, which we quickly forget about anyway (there is almost no story in the game). Quake 2 is the essence of good shooting, dynamic, bloody and fun, not story. And this shooting was very very good. I remember that was for me first game which was so bloody. Or Maybe Serious Sam was first? I don't remember that was when i was young.
The macabre also applies to the project of enemies that our Marine will face. As mentioned before, enemies are sometimes the embodiment of so-called "body horror", hybrids of body and machine or weapon. I remember that it made a great impression on me. Many times, when I killed an opponent, I have approached his corpse and wondered how they are constructed. There weren't too many types of enemies, but they build was very interesting.
In quake 2 we shoot with the "classics" - pistol, shotgun, super shotgun, msg, minigun, rocket launcher, grenade launcher, laser rifle and railgun. The weapons look very modern and it is a pleasure to use them. You can see that the creators are very good at the shooting mechanics. Quake 2 also forces the player to have more control over their weapons, it was probably the first shooter that introduced the fact that, for example, smg bounced upwards, shotguns had a large spread, and the mini gun needed a moment to calm down. So if the player didn't want to waste ammunition, he had to think about how to shoot from time to time. I remember how often i didn't had ammo. While the pace of the action is more important than tactics in this game, that doesn't mean Quake 2 is a piece of cake. At the highest difficulty level, some moments can be a pain, but on the other hand, it's good that we have a challenge for ourselves.
Level design makes exploring a lot of fun, because there are secrets on each of them. They are usually well hidden. I couldn't find all of them myself. Fortunately, finding them doesn't come down to going from wall to wall and pressing a key in the hope that a secret passage will open. They are well hidden, but I think an attentive player will find visual clues that will make it easier for him to find them. Such secrets contain not only first aid kits, armor, weapons, but also whole hidden levels.
Graphically, Quake 2 still looks surprisingly good. When I first played this game, the graphics looked amazing. as is always the case, the graphics "age" after a while, but I could still play Quake 2 without any problems. Even now, Nvidia has introduced a mod to quake 2 so that you can start the game with RTX. Who has this graphics card - I RECOMMEND!
Sound in game is a timeless value. The battle voices and cries of monsters are appropriately scary (I remember how many times in my childhood I was afraid to play because of it), the sound of the shots is properly adjusted and the music is a masterpiece. Like probably every Doom and Quake.
If you like shooters with fast action, you should play Quake. The game is great!
So, I think that is it :)
See ya!
