I Might Get Something Back... Or Maybe Not?
When I decided to close my last account on a centralized exchange, I didn’t do it just because I hated the idea of someone holding my identity documents, but mainly because I know from experience the risks of handing someone complete control over your funds.
Among my “experiences” in the crypto world, there was the collapse of a lending platform where I had deposited a large portion of what I had earned up to that point.
That day, I got a tangible and unmistakable lesson in the importance of the saying “not your keys, not your coins”, losing access to funds that were worth about $500 at the time — and would be worth around double today.
In a sense, I threw roughly $1,000 out the window which, who knows, maybe I would have lost elsewhere anyway — or maybe, just maybe, I could have made it grow... who knows.
At this point, of course, it’s useless to think about what I could have done with those funds...
... or is it?
And yet it moves!
After years of silence and utterly useless communication, the liquidation process finally seems to have taken its first real steps toward the user/creditor reimbursement phase.
At the end of May, I received a form to fill out regarding the proof of debt, in which I had to specify the type and amount of funds I held on the platform and prove ownership, along with a whole series of other details.
I admit it was a pleasant surprise: pleasant because it might mean I’ll actually see some money back, and surprise because I had long thought they’d eventually just disappear, stop communicating, and pretend nothing had ever happened.
Naturally, a lot could still go wrong: they could reject my claim for formal reasons, or the process could still take ages, or the refunded amount could be insignificant.
But my main concern is something else.
Is it really worth it?
Among the things I was asked for were the details of my passport — which, by the way, expired a few years ago... not the best start. 🤣
If my claim is accepted, though, I’ll surely be asked to provide bank account details for the reimbursement to be sent to.
I already provided my ID back then, and now I’ve sent another one (expired or not), so at this point it doesn’t really make much difference if I also provide banking info.
The real issue comes now — or rather, later — when (and if) I actually receive this sum.
A wire transfer from an entity based in Singapore?
Okay, the amount will be small — they surely won’t be giving me anything close to $500 — but will that be enough to avoid triggering any tax issues?
Because it would be more than ironic to finally get back something that was already mine, only to end up with a much bigger problem and the need to spend money — probably quite a bit more — just to sort it out.
I admit I’ve never really looked into how things work here in Italy from a tax perspective, mainly because I have very little capital — Hive is by far my most significant holding, and by a long shot — and also because I’ve never had to make any FIAT-to-Crypto deposits or Crypto-to-FIAT withdrawals.
So I really hope this story doesn’t turn into a huge mess that makes me regret, even more bitterly, not realizing sooner that my crypto is far better off in my own wallet.

Potrei Riottenere Qualcosa Indietro... O Forse No?
Quando ho deciso di chiudere il mio ultimo account su un exchange centralizzato non l'ho fatto solo per il fastidio che mi dava l'idea che qualcuno avesse i miei documenti d'identità, ma soprattutto perchè conosco per esperienza i rischi che possono derivare dal consegnare a qualcuno i propri fondi, affidandogliene il completo controllo.
Fra le mie "esperienze" nel mondo crypto c'è stato infatti il fallimento di una piattaforma di lending su cui avevo depositato buona parte di quel che avevo guadagnato fino a quel momento.
Quel giorno ho avuto una prova tangibile ed inequivocabile dell'importanza del detto "not your keys, not your coins", perdendo l'accesso a fondi che all'epoca valevano circa 500 dollari - mentre oggi varrebbero circa il doppio.
In un certo senso ho buttato dalla finestra più o meno 1000 dollari che, chissà, magari avrei perso in qualche altro mondo ma, sempre magari, sarei invece stato capace di far fruttare... chissà.
Ormai è ovviamente inutile pensare a cosa avrei potuto fare con quei fondi...
... oppure no?
Eppur si muove!
Dono anni di silenzio e comunicazioni completamente inutili, la procedura di liquidazione sembra infatti aver finalmente cominciato a muovere i primi veri passi verso la fare di rimborso dei creditori/utenti della piattaforma.
A fine maggio mi è infatti arrivato il form da compilare relativo alla proof of debt, mediante il quale ho dovuto indicare il tipo e quantità di fondi da me detenuti sulla piattaforma e dimostrarne la titolarità, oltre a dover indicare tutta una serie di altri dati.
Ammetto che è stata una bella sorpresa: bella perchè potrebbe voler dire che forse rivedrò qualche soldo, sorpresa perchè era da tempo che pensavo che ad un certo punto sarebbero spariti, cessando tutte le comunicazioni e facendo finta di nulla.
Naturalmente tanto potrebbe ancora andare storto: potrebbero rigettare la mia richiesta per motivi formali, oppure i tempi potrebbero essere ancora lunghissimi, o, ancora, potrebbe venire fuori che la cifra rimborsata è irrisoria.
La mia preoccupazione principale però è un'altra.
Il gioco vale la candela?
Tra le cose che mi sono state richieste ci sono infatti gli estremi del mio passaporto - che tra l'altro è scaduto da qualche anno... e già si parte male. 🤣
Se la mia richiesta verrà accettata, però, mi verranno sicuramente anche richieste delle coordinate bancarie a favore delle quali effettuare il rimborso della somma a cui avrò diritto.
Ho già dato a suo tempo i miei documenti, ne ho dato adesso un altro (per quanto scaduto), di base a questo punto non è che mi cambi molto anche a fornire delle coordinate bancarie.
Il problema arriva adesso o, per meglio dire, dopo, quando (e se) mi arriverà questa somma.
Un bonifico da un soggetto con sede in Singapore?
Ok, l'importo sarà basso - di certo non mi renderanno neanche lontanamente 500 dollari - ma sarà questo sufficiente a non crearmi qualche problema dal punto di vista fiscale?
Perchè sarebbe a dir poco ironico riavere indietro, dopo anni, qualcosa che era già mio, solo per ritrovarmi con un problema ben più grosso e la necessità di dover spendere soldi - sicuramente tra l'altro molti di più - per regolarizzare questa posizione.
Ammetto infatti di non essermi mai informato di come funzionino fiscalmente le cose qui in Italia, principalmente perchè ho veramente pochi fondi - Hive è di gran lunga la mia posizione più rilevante, e di parecchio - e anche perchè non ho mai dovuto fare nè depositi FIAT-Crypto nè prelievi Crypto-FIAT.
Spero quindi che questa storia non si trasformi in un'enorme fregatura che mi faccia pentire ancor più amaramente di aver capito troppo tardi che le mie criptovalute stanno decisamente meglio nel mio wallet.
