Being a park ranger means not only controlling and monitoring the systems of protected areas such as provincial parks, national parks, protected natural areas and natural monuments that each country has.
While this is your main task, it is by no means the only one we perform. Our mission goes much further. The park ranger also has security police and judicial functions.
In the beginning, the park rangers were mainly fed by baqueanos and experts from each region. They were the ones who knew the land and the natural environment better than anyone else.
On the other hand, they were used to living in isolation and dealing with the harsh climate, although they lacked any kind of specialization, whether technical, technological or environmental.
Over the years and with the development of the National Parks as protected areas, the need for specialized personnel arose. And so the training courses and requirements to become part of the body began to be implemented.
The park ranger has a permanent activity of service and direct connection between the community and the environment, with environmental protection but also educational purposes.
In this way we fulfill various functions, such as the protection and conservation of biodiversity, the surveillance and control of visitors, and not least environmental education and interpretation.
The park guards are also an important element in supporting applied research, since they provide many practical elements, tracking, sampling and other basic surveys (census, inventory and monitoring).
In order to be accepted as one of them, it is no longer as before that experience and being from the area were sufficient. Now it is required to carry out studies, pass exams, and also to possess certain psychophysical skills and abilities.
But all this is insufficient if you do not have a strong vocation for the protection of natural resources.
Someone has defined us as the true "guardians of the forest". And perhaps there is a lot of truth in that.
Ser guardaparque significa no solo controlar y vigilar los sistemas de áreas protegidas tales como parques provinciales, parques nacionales, áareas naturales protegidas y monumentos naturales que tiene cada país.
Si bien esta es su tarea principal no es la única que realizamos ni mucho menos.
Nuestra misión va mucho más allá. El guardaparques tiene también funciones de policía de seguridad y judicial.
En un comienzo, los cuerpos de guardaparques se nutrieron principalmente de baqueanos y conocedores de cada región. Eran quienes conocían los terrenos y el ambiente natural mejor que nadie.
Por otro lado estaban acostumbrados a vivir en condiciones de aislamiento y a lidiar con las inclemencias del clima, aunque carecían de cualquier tipo de especialización, ya sea técnica, tecnológica o ambiental.
Con el pasar de los años y el desarrollo de los Parques Nacionales como áreas protegidas surgió la necesidad de contar con personal especializado. Y así comenzaron a implementarse los cursos de capacitación y requisitos para entrara a formar parte del cuerpo.
El guardaparque tiene una actividad permanente de servicio y de conexión directa entre la comunidad y el medio ambiente, con dines de tutela ambiental pero también educativos.
De esta manera cumplimos diversas funciones, tales como la protección y conservación de la biodiversidad, la vigilancia y control de visitantes, y no menos importante la educación e interpretación ambiental.
Los guardaparques también son un elemento importante para el apoyo a la investigación aplicada, ya que porporcionan muchos elementos de orden práctico, rastreos, muestras y otras prospecciones básicas (censo, inventario y monitoreo).
Para lograr ser aceptado como uno de ellos ya no es más como antes que era suficiente la experiencia y ser de la zona. Ahora se requiere realizar estudios, aprobar exámenes, y también poseer también ciertas habilidades y aptitudes psicofísicas.
Pero todo ello es insuficiente si no se cuenta con una firme vocación por la protección de los recursos naturales.
Alguien nos ha definido como los verdaderos "guardianes del bosque". Y tal vez mucho de verdad haya en ello.
