Who knew we would see Stallone in a superhero movie. Although I didn't expect to see him in a movie like this in this day and age, I'm not really surprised. The actor has always been about playing roles where the good guy does impressive things, more impressive than some "superheroes". The Demolition Man comes to mind, for example, that movie in which he had Wesley Snipes as his antagonist, the villain of the moment; the last Rambo, a movie that made me think about how Stallone rips out hearts so easily and I find it so hard to chop up a half-frozen chicken?
Anyway, the point is that the actor was encouraged to take part in a superhero movie, but not as a super in the middle of his life, making a parody of what a superhero should be, no. In this movie we see an older actor, in a more mature stage of his life, playing a character that is quite suitable for him.
I couldn't imagine Stallone at this age flying or pirouetting in the purest Steve Rogers style in Captain America and The Winter Soldier; however, this is Stallone we're talking about. In Mercenaries he launched a missile like a paper airplane, so in this movie I would expect no less than what I saw, a superhero who is retired but still knows how to punch, how to bust heads, how to save kids and how to bring down buildings on bad guys.
I remember I started watching the movie thinking "Come on, a Superhero movie that's not from Marvel or DC, this is going to turn out bad..." Although DC and Marvel sometimes leave a lot to be desired, expectations were even lower because this film had no relation to either of these companies; even so, I must confess that I surprised myself by enjoying the film quite a bit, even more than many of the latest ones put out by the other two aforementioned companies. In fact, I have re-watched it a couple of times, because I find it entertaining.
It all begins with a brief scene that puts us in context, narrated by Sam, the boy around whom the whole plot revolves. Because, from my point of view, this time the protagonist is not the Superhero, but this little boy who lives in a gothic-like city, with the difference that here things do happen during the day, where you can shoot scenes with natural light and where the characters CAN be seen clearly... (yes, I'm talking to you "The Batman", you couldn't see anything in your movie).
More than the superhero theme, I was struck by the theme behind it. One might think that it is not a serious movie, from which no message can be extracted, but it does have quite an interesting message and that is that it makes us see how many young people end up falling into the wrong path because of the environment in which they are raised. Sometimes it is not even the parents' fault, but because of the very environment they are in; however, we all have the power to decide whether we will let ourselves be led by good or evil. At least that is what the film shows us.
Our protagonist, according to me, is obsessed with Samaritan, to the point where he believes that the superhero is still alive. The boy is a fan of this hero of yesteryear and coincidentally, he manages to find the retired character who, again, coincidentally, lives in the same town as him.
He and Stallone begin to have a relationship much like a teacher might have with a student. At the beginning of this relationship, the superhero has his problems with the boy, but he ends up loving him to the point of being willing to risk his life for him, like the good Super that he is. It is very interesting how Sam discovers that Stallone's character is a superhuman, even a little shocking some scenes, like the one of a certain car "accident".
Aside from the friendship that develops between the superhero and the kid, there is the plot of all the evil that this kid gets into. If it weren't for the story of Samaritan, a superhero, we would be seeing the story of how a young boy can get into trouble simply for having the good intention of helping his mom pay the rent.
Sam's mother is a woman who works all day and has little time left to care for the boy, who on more than one occasion gets involved in situations in which a child should not be involved. A scene comes to mind, for example, in which the villain on duty murders a policeman. It's a cruel scene, but more cruel is the fact that the child has to witness that. He was already involved with this villain, but now that he knew what he was capable of doing, one can imagine what would go through little Sam's mind as he watched a man just killed in front of him: "I have to get out of here," "This guy can hurt me or my mom," "How am I going to get out of this?"
He gets involved with mafias, it's a complicated situation for a child. I remember, for example, a friend I had as a teenager who was involved in a situation like that. Watching the film I realized that sometimes these young people do not find a way out of this situation, because they do not have a hero who can get them out of it, so they end up sinking deeper and deeper into these situations until they reach the end that people who live in such a dangerous world usually have, which is not exactly a happy ending....
With all its flaws, which it has, like any movie, the truth is that I found it entertaining. It is a movie that I quite enjoyed despite having low expectations about it. I am no one to criticize a movie, but I just give my opinion and, from my point of view, it is a movie that can be quite enjoyable while you are at home, any night of a weekend when you have nothing else to do...

Quien diría que veríamos a Stallone en una película de superhéroes. Aunque no me esperaba verlo en una película así en estos tiempos, la verdad no me sorprende. El actor siempre ha sido de interpretar papeles donde el bueno hace cosas impresionantes, más impresionantes que las de algunos “superhéroes”. Me viene a la mente, por ejemplo, el demoledor, aquella película en la que tuvo como antagonista a Wesley Snipes, el villano de turno; la última de Rambo, película que me hizo pensar en cómo Stallone arranca corazones tan fácilmente y a mí me cuesta tanto picar un pollo medio congelado…
En fin, el punto es que el actor se animó a participar en una película de superhéroes, pero no como un súper en plena etapa de su vida, haciendo una parodia de lo que un superhéroe debería ser, no. En esta película vemos a un actor mayor, en una etapa más madura de su vida, interpretando a un personaje que es bastante adecuado para él.
No podría imaginar a Stallone a esta edad volando o haciendo piruetas al más puro estilo de Steve Rogers en Capitán América y El Soldado del Invierno; sin embargo, es Stallone de quien estamos hablando. En los mercenarios lanzó un misil como si fuese un avioncito de papel, así que en esta película no esperaría menos de lo que vi, un superhéroe retirado pero que aún sabe cómo golpear, como reventar cabezas, como salvar niños y cómo hacer caer edificios sobre los malos.
Recuerdo que comencé a ver la película pensando “Va, una película de Superhéroes que no es de Marvel ni DC, esto va a salir mal…” Aunque DC y Marvel a veces dejan mucho que desear, las expectativas estaban aún más bajas porque este film no tenía relación con ninguna de estas compañías; aun así, debo confesar que me sorprendí a mí mismo disfrutando bastante de la película, incluso más que muchas de las últimas que han sacado las otras dos compañías ya mencionadas. De hecho, la he vuelto a ver un par de veces, porque me resulta entretenida.
Todo comienza con una breve escena que nos pone en contexto, narrada por Sam, el niño sobre el que gira toda esta trama. Porque, desde mi punto de vista, en esta ocasión el protagonista no es el Superhéroe, sino este pequeño niño que vive en una ciudad parecida a gótica, con la diferencia de que aquí sí suceden cosas durante el día, donde se pueden grabar escenas con luz natural y donde los personajes SI se pueden ver con claridad… (sí, te hablo a ti “The Batman”, no se veía nada en tu película).
Más que el tema del superhéroe, me llamó la atención todo el tema que hay detrás. Uno podría pensar que no es una película seria, de la que no se puede extraer un mensaje, pero sí tiene un mensaje bastante interesante y es que nos hace ver cómo muchos jóvenes terminan cayendo en el mal camino por el ambiente en el que se crían. A veces ni siquiera es culpa de los padres, sino por el mismo entorno en el que están; sin embargo, todos tenemos el poder de decidir si nos dejaremos llevar por el bien o por el mal. Al menos eso nos muestra la película.
Nuestro protagonista, según mi persona, está obsesionado con Samaritan, al punto en que cree que el superhéroe aún está vivo. El niño es un fan de este héroe de antaño y casualmente, logra dar con el retirado personaje que, de nuevo, casualmente, vive en su misma localidad.
Él y Stallone comienzan a tener una relación muy parecida a la que puede tener un maestro con un alumno. Al comienzo de esta relación, el superhéroe tiene sus problemas con el niño, pero termina queriéndolo al punto de estar dispuesto a arriesgar su vida por él, como buen Súper que es. Es muy interesante como Sam va descubriendo que el personaje de Stallone es un superhumano, incluso un poco impactante algunas escenas, como la de cierto “accidente” automovilístico.
Fuera de la amistad que se crea entre el superhéroe y el niño, está la trama de todo el mal camino el que se mete este niño. Si no fuese porque es la historia de Samaritan, un superhéroe, estaríamos viendo la historia de cómo un joven puede meterse en problemas simplemente por tener la buena intención de ayudar a su mamá a pagar el alquiler.
La madre de Sam es una mujer que trabaja todo el día y poco tiempo le queda para cuidar al niño, que en más de una ocasión se ve involucrado en situaciones en las que un niño no debería estar involucrado. Me viene a la mente, por ejemplo, una escena en la que el villano de turno asesina a un policía. Es una escena cruel, pero más cruel es el hecho de que el niño tenga que presenciar eso. Él ya estaba involucrado con este villano, pero ahora que sabía lo que era capaz de hacer, uno puede imaginar lo que pasaría por la mente del pequeño Sam al ver cómo acaban de matar a un hombre frente a él: “Tengo que salir de aquí”, “Este tipo me puede hacer daño a mi o a mi mamá”, “¿Cómo voy a hacer para salir de esto?”
Se involucra con mafias, es una situación complicada para un niño. Recuerdo, por ejemplo, a un amigo que tuve en la adolescencia que se vio involucrado en una situación así. Viendo la película me di cuenta que a veces estos jóvenes no encuentran la salida a esta situación, porque no tienen un héroe que los pueda sacar de allí, así que terminan hundiéndose más y más en estas situaciones hasta que llega el final que suelen tener las personas que viven en ese mundo tan peligroso, el cual no es precisamente un final feliz…
Con todos sus defectos, que los tiene, como toda película, la verdad me pareció entretenida. Es una película que disfruté bastante a pesar de tener bajas expectativas sobre esta. Que no soy nadie para criticar una película, pero solo doy mi opinión y, desde mi punto de vista, es una película que se puede disfrutar bastante mientras estás en tu casa, cualquier noche de un fin de semana en el que no tienes nada más que hacer…
