Other western countries are guaranteeing their citizens a stipend to get them through this unprecedented crisis. The United States stands alone allowing politics to enter into what should have been a speedy and sustained offer of assistance for every American. We seem to have endless amounts of money to feed the military industrial complex that President Eisenhower warned us about in his farewell address to the nation. We the people support an unbelievable number of almost 1000 military bases *outside* the USA. You'd need a spreadsheet to keep track of them all, not to mention the troops we have deployed and which countries we're bombing this week. But mention canceling student loan debt? and people start losing their minds.
You can almost hear Marie Antoinette saying "let them eat cake."
Debt by design
The United States provides foreign assistance funds to over 100 countries around the world. But don't you DARE ask for assistance to our own citizens who are drowning in student loan debt. You'd almost think it was being done on purpose in order to keep people in bondage to a system that seems to fear that offering a free college education, will somehow lead to socialism in America.
Part of the reason I'm writing this is I'd been reading articles filled with vitriol from "contributors" freaking out that the new administration may consider forgiving college debt. These are some of the same people that had no problem arguing for the forgiveness of the PPP "loans" to businesses, which ended up becoming outright grants which never need to be paid back. "Yes Virginia, we can have socialism for the business class, but not for the people."
It struck me that maybe these lobbyists were writing their anti-student loan forgiveness screeds on behalf of the industry itself! As doing so would provide a huge jolt to the economy and remove the choice millions of struggling students must make of sending in that loan payment or keeping a roof over their heads.
As someone in school myself, I see it firsthand amongst my friends who've graduated and cannot find work or have a choice of working in some badly run place with the risk of contracting coronavirus. My college has a nursing school and the stories I'm hearing from the front lines are horrific. I can still remember the African girl in March who was studying to be a respiratory therapist. She was scared to death and who can blame her. At times I think about what must have gone through her mind knowing she would have to work in such close proximity to people in the covid wards. Hearing her voice those fears in class, really brought home the devastating situation our frontline workers are in. Not to mention the acute shortage of nurses and doctors as so many have been sickened and died in the course of this global calamity. Those people have a job to go to albeit a dangerous one, but many others are sitting at home wondering how their going to make the next student loan debt payment, with many falling into default.
Luke 4:18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he has sent me to heal the broken-hearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised.”
CANCEL IT ALL!
We need to stand up to the industry and their lobbyists and say enough is enough. End student debt now. Cancel it all. If we can always find the funds to pay for almost 1000 overseas military bases, deploy troops in country after country and feed the bloated military industrial complex's black budget, we can come up with the funding to eliminate student debt and make college free for those who pass an entrance exam. College debt is a shackle holding back the futures of students and the leaders of tomorrow. Let's break those chains of student loan debt and CANCEL IT ALL!
