Hoy cierro esta trilogía, con un texto que me vi obligado a reducir en extremo. Estos son textos que no me gusta preelaborar, sino que me gusta que vayan fluyendo y París tenía mucho más que contar de lo que pude imaginar. Tuve que dejar cantidad de episodios afuera, pues de lo contrario este post sería interminable.
Creo que habrá algunas partes de esa experiencia que en un futuro se puedan ganar un espacio propio. Por lo pronto sé que voy a publicar un addendum a esta trilogía, pero con algunos textos sueltos y fragmentos de escritos que realicé en aquella ocasión, en la cual falta el apoyo de imágenes, porque como epílogo a la historia, en Bruselas entraron a la habitación y se robaron las cámaras fotográficas de los que compartíamos el cuarto, borrando así el soporte gráfico que debió acompañar esta narración.
La primera parte de esta historia es Un evento teatral, continúa en un vuelo y termina en el texto que les dejo a continuación.
Today I close this trilogy, with a text that I was forced to reduce in extreme. These are texts that I don't like to pre-elaborate, I like them to flow and Paris had much more to tell than I could imagine. I had to leave a lot of episodes out, otherwise this post would be endless.
I think there will be some parts of that experience that in the future may earn a space of their own. For now I know that I will publish an addendum to this trilogy, but with some loose texts and fragments of writings that I made on that occasion, in which the support of images is missing, because as an epilogue to the story, in Brussels the room was robbed and the cameras of those who shared the room were stolen, thus erasing the graphic support that should have accompanied this narration.

Como este viaje había sido el producto de una interesante y económica oportunidad y no algo planificado con antelación, no habían metas muy concretas ni expectativas particulares. Yo solo sabía que llevaba suficiente dinero para pasar tranquilamente un mes y medio en París. Más aún, ni siquiera iba a tener que pagar la residencia estudiantil, porque mi papá había aprovechado para hablar con un amigo suyo, quien se encontraba viviendo en esa ciudad, para que me recibiera durante mi estadía en la capital francesa. Como yo llevaba credencial de ONTEJ, podía comer en los comedores estudiantiles, tanto el desayuno como el almuerzo, así que el único gasto pendiente eran las cenas y transporte.
Eduardo López Pérez era un economista venezolano que se encontraba allá haciendo estudios superiores, en compañía de su esposa Ligia. Quizá imaginando la vida que le esperaba a un muchacho solo, a punto de cumplir los 18 años, en aquella ciudad, Eduardo estableció una pauta para mí, me puso un par de tareas concretas en la ciudad y la obligación de hacer una lectura, la cual discutiríamos posteriormente. Para ello me entregó dos libros, uno de tema político y otro económico.
La rutina en la ciudad empezó sencilla, levantarme temprano, ir a desayunar en un comedor cerca de Odeón y de allí al Barrio Latino a encontrarme con mi amigo Lorenzo. Al día siguiente nos encontramos con las “iniciadoras” de aquella aventura, Laura Sánchez y Naghieli Godoy. Con ellas y con el hijo de Laura, Ernesto, hicimos nuestro primeros recorridos e hicimos algunas de las actividades tradicionales de la ciudad, como subir a la torre Eiffel, ir a los Campos Eliseos, paseos por las riberas del Sena... Así un par de veces y luego, supongo que ellas se irían a otro lugar, porque no nos volvimos a ver y no recuerdo la causa. Pero a eso le siguieron varios días más de “turistas”: el Arco de Triunfo, la Catedral de Notre Dame, el Museo del Louvre, etc. Yo me sentía como un guía, porque recordaba a la perfección todo lo vivido nueve años antes, cuando íbamos camino a Alemania, que pasamos una semana en esa ciudad. Así que nada de aquello me resultaba novedoso, me sentía como el encargado de mostrarle la ciudad a Lorenzo.
Aquello me preocupó bastante, porque él solo iba a estar una semana en París y luego seguiría hacia Italia y a mí me tocaba quedarme solo en esa ciudad (Eduardo y Ligia tenían su mundo aparte y sus actividades). Yo necesitaba encontrar la manera de encajar en aquella ciudad a como diera lugar.
En un par de días descubrimos que el Quartier Latin, o Barrio Latino, era la zona más divertida, transitada y animada de la ciudad, especialmente en las noches. Así que se convirtió en nuestra sede cada día al ocultarse el sol.
Allí encontramos un grupo de latinoamericanos que resultó ser muy divertido y nos integramos con ellos. Ni Lorenzo ni yo habíamos consumido nunca ningún tipo de drogas y habíamos acordado que bajo ninguna circunstancia íbamos a probar nada en ese viaje. Pero al segundo día con estos nuevos amigos, vemos que sacan el rolling paper y empiezan a elaborar un joint. Lorenzo y yo nos miramos como buscando cada uno respuesta en el otro. Aquel porro empezó a pasar de mano en mano y cada quien iba inhalando su dosis, a la vez que el olor iba impregnando todo. Girando en dirección contraria a las agujas del reloj, le toca el turno primero a Lorenzo que a mí. —No gracias, yo no fumo eso…!— dijo y aquello fue como una ofensa, todos lo miraron de mala manera y siguieron pasando la marihuana.
Lorenzo se iba en un par de días más y yo me quedaría allí, así que no me convenía “quedar mal” con nuestros amigos, así que pensé que debía actuar de otra manera. Cuando me tocó el turno, tomé el joint en mis manos, lo olí y les dije: —Esto es etapa superada para mí. Casi me mata, pero logré salirme a tiempo. ¡Gracias, pero juré que no volvería a meterme nada…!
A diferencia de la experiencia con mi amigo, todos me miraron con ojos de admiración y de allí en adelante me convertí en el protegido de todo ese grupo, mis amigos del Barrio Latino.
Con el paso de los días, se me había ocurrido una idea, pero no le comenté nada a Lorenzo. Así que para su penúltimo día en París le dije que iríamos a la Basilique du Sacré-Cœur de Montmartre, la Basílica del Sagrado Corazón, ubicada en Pigalle, que es la misma zona donde queda el famoso Moulin Rouge y donde persistían muchos locales con shows similares, bares de lujo y algunos lupanares de prestigio. Esa noche entramos en contacto con todos los componentes de ese mundo. Nunca he apostado al hecho de pagar por una experiencia sexual, pero tratándose de la famosas cortesanas francesas, se podía hacer una excepción (aunque debo confesar que no le hicieron honor a su fama mundial). Entre champaña, música y mujeres, se fueron todos mis fondos para mes y medio y solo guardé de manera estratégica un traveller check por el monto suficiente para poder comprarme una guitarra.
Luego de conocer la vida “alta” de París, me tocaba conocer la parte “baja”.
Al momento de irse mi compañero de viaje, el 22 de agosto, no me quedaba nada de dinero disponible. Así que de inmediato fui a comprar la guitarra y empecé a cantar en las estaciones del Metro. Los primeros días fue un desastre, pues entre el hecho de que me daba un poco de vergüenza y descubrir que los que ya cantaban de antemano allí, tenían su control para que nadie invadiera sus espacios, apenas lograba reunir para pagar el almuerzo.
Mi papá había enviado conmigo un regalo para un amigo suyo, un artista venezolano, de quien lamentablemente no recuerdo el nombre. Lo localicé después de haber empezado esta segunda fase de mi viaje. Le conté de mi aventura y riendo me ofreció prestarme un cuatro y me aseguró que con ese instrumento me iría mejor, por lo novedoso.
En efecto, el cambio fue contundente. Además tuve la suerte de que mis amigos del Barrio Latino, con frecuencia me acompañaban a cantar en los trenes del Metro, lo cual resultaba muy productivo, pues mientras yo cantaba una sola canción en cada vagón, ellos hacían la colecta. A pesar de lo efectivo de este procedimiento, poco a poco empecé a evitar su compañía, pues eran muchos los vicios y los aspectos negativos, no solo de ese grupo, sino de la mayoría de jóvenes. Casi toda la juventud parisina estaba sumergida en unos niveles de alienación y desubicación, que me producía una enorme tristeza.
Afortunadamente en septiembre, por recomendación de mi anfitrión Eduardo, asistí a la fiesta del diario L’Humanité, un periódico político muy popular desde la ocupación nazi a Francia, ya que desempeñó un papel importante en la resistencia. Allí pude encontrar a una sociedad muy diferente a la juventud que circulaba por las calles del Quartier Latin y pude ver una sociedad con un interés por el prójimo y por los asuntos sociales y esto me devolvió la fe y la esperanza en la humanidad.
En ese entorno, las lecturas y discusiones de los libros con el amigo López Pérez, tuvieron un impacto muchísimo mayor en mí y se convirtieron en parte de principios y valores que aún defiendo el día de hoy. Se trató pues de un viaje de vivencias extremas, de unas experiencias aleccionadoras y de aprendizajes invaluables para mí.
El 21 de septiembre me despedí de Paris, retorné a la capital belga donde me encontraría nuevamente con Lorenzo y el 23 en la noche alzamos vuelo en retorno a la patria.

As this trip had been the product of an interesting and inexpensive opportunity and not something planned in advance, there were no very concrete goals or particular expectations. I just knew that I had enough money with me to spend a month and a half in Paris. Moreover, I was not even going to have to pay for the student residence, because my dad had taken the opportunity to talk to a friend of his, who was living in that city, to receive me during my stay in the French capital. As I had an ONTEJ credential, I could eat in the student dining rooms, both breakfast and lunch, so the only pending expenses were dinners and transportation.
Eduardo Lopez Perez was a Venezuelan economist who was there doing higher studies, accompanied by his wife Ligia. Perhaps imagining the life that awaited a single boy, about to turn 18, in that city, Eduardo established a guideline for me, he gave me a couple of concrete tasks in the city and the obligation to do some reading, which we would discuss later. He gave me two books, one on politics and the other on economics.
The routine in the city started out simple, get up early, go to breakfast in a diner near Odeon and from there to the Latin Quarter to meet my friend Lorenzo. The next day we met the "initiators" of that adventure, Laura Sanchez and Naghieli Godoy. With them and Laura's son, Ernesto, we made our first tours and did some of the traditional activities of the city, like climbing the Eiffel Tower, going to the Champs Elysees, stroll along the banks of the Seine.... So a couple of times and then, I guess they would go somewhere else, because we didn't see each other again and I don't remember why. But that was followed by several more days of "tourists": the Arc de Triomphe, Notre Dame Cathedral, the Louvre Museum, etc. I felt like a guide, because I remembered to perfection all the things I had experienced nine years before, when we were on our way to Germany, when we spent a week in that city. So none of that was new to me, I felt like the one in charge of showing Lorenzo the city.
That worried me a lot, because he was only going to be in Paris for a week and then he would go on to Italy and I had to stay alone in that city (Eduardo and Ligia had their own world and their own activities). I needed to find a way to fit into that city by any means possible.
Within a couple of days we discovered that the Quartier Latin, or Latin Quarter, was the most fun, busy and lively area of the city, especially at night. So it became our headquarters every day as the sun went down.
There we met a group of Latin Americans who turned out to be very fun and we joined them. Neither Lorenzo nor I had ever used drugs of any kind and we had agreed that under no circumstances were we going to try anything on that trip. But on the second day with these new friends, we see them pull out the rolling paper and start to make a joint. Lorenzo and I looked at each other as if looking for an answer from each other. That weed began to pass from hand to hand and each one was inhaling his dose, at the same time that the smell was impregnating everything. Turning in the opposite direction to the hands of the clock, it was Lorenzo's turn before mine. -No thanks, I don't smoke that..." he said and that was like an offense, everyone looked at him in a really bad way and continued passing the marijuana.
Lorenzo was leaving in a couple of days and I would stay there, so I didn't want to "look bad" with our friends, so I thought I should act differently. When it was my turn, I took the joint in my hands, smelled it and told them: -This is stage over for me. It almost killed me, but I managed to get out of it in time. Thank you, but I swore I wouldn't take anything again...!
Unlike the experience with my friend, everyone looked at me with admiring eyes and from then on I became the protégé of that whole group, my friends from the Latin Quarter.
As the days went by, an idea had occurred to me, but I didn't mention it to Lorenzo. So for his penultimate day in Paris I told him that we would go to the Basilique du Sacré-Cœur de Montmartre, the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, in Pigalle, which is the same area where the famous Moulin Rouge is located and where there were still many places with similar shows, luxury bars and some prestigious brothels. That night we came in contact with all the components of that world. I have never bet on paying for a sexual experience, but being the famous French courtesans, an exception could be made (although I must confess that they did not live up to their worldwide fame). Between champagne, music and women, all my funds for a month and a half were gone and I only strategically saved a traveller check for enough money to buy a guitar.
After getting to know the "high" life in Paris, it was my turn to get to know the "low" part.
When my traveling companion left on August 22, I had no money left. So I immediately went to buy the guitar and started singing in the Metro stations. The first few days were a disaster, because between the fact that I was a little embarrassed and discovering that those who were already singing there had their control so that no one would invade their space, I barely managed to scrape together enough money to pay for lunch.
My dad had sent me a gift for a friend of his, a Venezuelan artist, whose name I unfortunately do not remember. I tracked him down after I started this second phase of my trip. I told him about my adventure and he laughingly offered to lend me a cuatro and assured me that I would do better with that instrument, because of its novelty.
Indeed, the change was overwhelming. I was also fortunate that my friends from the Latin Quarter often accompanied me to sing in the Metro trains, which was very productive, because while I sang only one songs in each car, they made the collection. In spite of the effectiveness of this procedure, little by little I began to avoid their company, because there were many vices and negative aspects, not only of that group, but of the majority of young people. Almost all Parisian youth were submerged in a level of alienation and dislocation, which made me extremely sad.
Fortunately in September, on the recommendation of my host Eduardo, I attended the party of the newspaper L'Humanité, a very popular political newspaper since the Nazi occupation of France, as it played an important role in the resistance. There I was able to meet a society very different from the youth that circulated in the streets of the Quartier Latin and I was able to see a society with an interest for others and for social issues and this gave me back my faith and hope in humanity.
In that environment, the readings and discussions of the books with my friend Lopez Perez, had a much greater impact on me and became part of principles and values that I still defend today. It was a journey of extreme adventures, sobering experiences and invaluable learning for me.
On September 21 I said goodbye to Paris, returned to the Belgian capital where I would meet Lorenzo again and on the night of the 23rd we flew back to our homeland.
