When someone seems to be born with a musical instrument in his hands.
And it all began with wooden spoons, pots and pans.
When your mother is an opera singer and your father is a music teacher, the newborn son is bound to wonder how he can contribute. Jakob Manz, born in Dettingen (Baden-Württemberg, Germany) on 16 May 2001, first took his grandparents' cooking utensils and used them as acoustic instruments at the age of three.

Jakob Manz, am 16. Mai 2001 in Dettingen (Baden-Württemberg) geboren, nahm sich im Alter von 3 Jahren erstmals das Kochgeschirr der Großeltern vor und nutze diese als Akustik-Instrumente.
However, as his grandmother insisted that pots and pans should be kept on the stove, the dwarf took up the instrument, which at the time was much longer than he was. Nevertheless, at the age of 5 he made it into the trombone band. But it was the drums that exerted the greatest attraction on him. If you look at the teachers with whom Jakob Manz was taught to play the drums, you can get an idea of the national top class: Markus Püngel & Torsten Krill.
Da Oma jedoch darauf bestand, dass Töpfe und Pfannen eher auf den Ofen gehören, griff der Zwerg zu dem Instrument, welches ihn in der Länge damals noch übertraf. Trotzdem schaffte er es mit 5 Jahren in den Posaunenchor. Trotzdem übte das Schlagzeug noch immer eine größere Anziehungskraft aus. Wenn man sieht, bei welchen Lehrern Jakob Manz am Schlagzeug unterrichtet wurde, dann erahnt man bereits nationale Spitzenklasse: Markus Püngel & Torsten Krill.
In 2009, Jakob Manz put the drumsticks to one side and learned to play the next instrument - the recorder. Awards at the 'Youth makes music' and 'Youth and the Jazz' competitions soon followed. When he also won the competition 'Freedom for the flute' of the band [Wildes Holz] (https://www.wildes-holz.de/), his path to jazz was set. In order not to be reduced to the flute, he added the saxophone to his repertoire.
2009 legte Jakob Manz die Drum-Sticks zur Seite und erlernte das nächste Instrument - die Blöckflöte. Prompt folgten Auszeichnungen bei den Wettbewerben ‘Jugend musiziert’ und ‘Jugend jazzt’. Als er dann auch noch bei ‘Freiheit für die Blockflöte’ der Band Wildes Holz den Sieg davontrug, war sein Weg in den Bereich Jazz wie festgeschrieben. Um nicht auf die Flöte reduziert zu bleiben, nahm er noch das Saxofon in sein Repertoire auf.
At the age of 15 (i.e. in 2016), Jakob Manz was accepted at the academy of music in Stuttgart. In 2019, he then moved from the Neckar to the Rhine in Cologne and narrowed down his studies to the subjects of jazz / pop and the saxophone. But by then (2017) he had already founded the Jakob Manz Project together with Hannes Stollsteimer, Frieder Klein and Paul Albrecht. First known only in Baden-Württemberg, this changed radically with the appearance at the Leverkusen Jazz Days.
Mit nur 15 Lebensjahren auf dem Buckel (also 2016), wurde Jakob Manz an der Musikhochschule in Stuttgart aufgenommen. 2019 wechselte er dann vom Neckar an den Rhein nach Köln und grenzte sein Studium mit den Fächern Jazz/Pop und Saxofon ein. Doch hatte er zu diesem Zeitpunkt (2017), zusammen mit Hannes Stollsteimer, Frieder Klein und Paul Albrecht, das Jakob Manz Project ins Leben gerufen. Zunächst ausschließlich in Baden-Württemberg bekannt, änderte sich das mit dem Auftritt bei den Leverkusener Jazztagen grundsätzlich.
So far, two albums have been released by the project: "Natural Energy" and "Je suis Paris". Jakob Manz is solely responsible for 'Groove Connection', while for 'The Gallery Concerts' he has brought the pianist Johanna Summer into the studio with him.
It would go beyond the scope of this article to list all the prizes and musicians this exceptional musician has received and been invited to collaborate with. (See the appendix for more on this subject).
Das Project brachte bislang zwei Alben auf den Markt: ‘Natural Energy’ und ‘Je suis Paris’. Die alleinige Verantwortung trägt Jakob Manz dann allerdings für ‘Groove Connection’, während er sich für ‘The Gallery Concerts’ noch die Pianistin Johanna Summer mit ins Studio nahm.
An dieser Stelle mit der Aufzählung der Preise und Musikern zu beginnen, die dieser Ausnahmemusiker erhielt und von denen er zu gemeinsamen Produktionen eingeladen wurde, würde den Rahmen des Beitrages sprengen. (Im Anhang mehr dazu.)
