In this opportunity, I continue with the series Embedded Systems with Style, giving continuity to Part 5, started in the post Embedded Systems with Style. Part 5: Development Methodology. -Conventional Approach, reflecting in these lines the Development of an Embedded System (ES) under a Conventional Approach.
En esta oportunidad, sigo con la serie Sistemas Empotrados o Embebidos con Estilo, dando continuidad a la Parte 5, iniciada en el post Embedded Systems with Style. Part 5: Development Methodology. -1.- Conventional Approach, plasmando en estas líneas el Desarrollo de un Sistema Empotrado (SE) bajo un Enfoque Convencional.
Here we run the first stage, System Specification, which will lead to defining the Embedded System Architecture, and in subsequent posts, we will be delivering the stages that make up this type of approach.
Aquí se ejecutan el primer estadio, Especificación del Sistema, que llevará a definir la Arquitectura del Sistema Empotrado, y en posteriores post se irán entregando los estadios que conforman este tipo de enfoque.
I will try, as far as possible, to provide sufficient content for the understanding of such development. It is understood that if there is any doubt or specific question, you can ask it in the comments and I will gladly give you an answer.

In some sports activities such as walking, jogging, and cycling, there are two important variables that affect those who practice them: the ambient temperature and the inclination of the trajectory or route.
En algunas actividades deportivas como la caminata, trote y ciclismo hay dos variables importantes que afectan a quienes lo practican, la temperatura ambiente y la inclinación en la trayectoria o recorrido.
Both have an impact on physical performance and can jeopardize the completion of the course due to exhaustion or failure to meet the goals in terms of the established time when it comes to sports competitions. For this reason, it is important to have information on these variables to use the most suitable techniques for each sport and to manage energy and speed.
Ambas inciden en el rendimiento físico y pueden poner en riesgo culminar el recorrido por agotamiento o no cumplir con las metas en términos del tiempo establecido cuando se trata de competencias deportivas. Por esta razón, es importante tener información de estas variables para utilizar las técnicas más idóneas en cada deporte y administrar la energía y velocidad.
I will take as an example the formal practice of walking, in which during training, the coach is in charge of giving information to the athletes during the walk, indicating the adjustments to be made in each case. This is done repeatedly until it becomes part of the actions to be taken in the competition.
Tomaré como ejemplo la práctica formal de la caminata, en la cual durante el entrenamiento, el entrenador se encarga de dar la información a los atletas durante el recorrido, indicando los ajustes que deben hacerse en cada caso. Esto se realiza reiteradamente, hasta llegar a formar parte de las acciones a tomar en la competencia.
However, in competition, it is necessary to give a quick and timely response, so that athletes adapt to the information provided in the best way in full execution. Avoid undesirable situations, such as exhaustion or indisposition that lead to abandoning the competition or endanger their health.
Sin embargo, en competencia hay que dar respuesta rápida y oportuna, para que los atletas se adapten a la información proporcionada de la mejor manera en plena ejecución. Evitando situaciones indeseables, como el agotamiento o indisposición que lleve abandonar la competencia o poner en peligro su salud.
For this reason, it is advisable to design an instrument, with current technology, that measures at all times the ambient temperature and the possible slopes of the terrain, to have monitoring of what happens and to be able to inform the athlete in time for him to make the respective adjustment and manage his performance in the circuit. This would provide valuable aid to improve sports practice.
Por tal motivo, es aconsejable diseñar un instrumento, con la tecnología actual, que mida en todo momento la temperatura ambiente y las posibles inclinaciones que tenga el terreno, para así tener un monitoreo de lo que sucede y poder en la competencia, informar a tiempo al deportista para que este haga el ajuste respectivo y administre su ejecución en el circuito. Esto proporcionaría una valiosa ayuda para mejorar la práctica deportiva.
In addition, it would be advisable to record this data to evaluate and correct in training, the rhythms or speed of execution in specific situations.
Además, sería aconsejable registrar estos datos para luego evaluar y corregir en los entrenamientos, los ritmos o velocidad de ejecución en situaciones puntuales.
The above mentioned approach allows defining the specifications that condition the Embedded System to be developed.
Lo señalado en el planteamiento permite definir las especificaciones que condicionan el Sistema Empotrado a desarrollar.
First, a Conventional Approach is established to the full extent accompanied by the Platform-Based Approach. This subject was explained in the post Styled Embedded Systems. Part 5: Development Methodology. -Conventional Approach.
Primero, se establece un Enfoque Convencional en toda su extensión acompañado del Basado en Plataformas. Asunto que se explicó en el post Styled Embedded Systems. Part 5: Development Methodology. -1.- Conventional Approach.
Then, it starts with a description of the behavior, originating the Functional Specification and Simulation, results with which the decision is made to establish the System Architecture, which provides the basis for the hardware and software design, which are evaluated against the established Architecture.
Entonces, se inicia con una descripción del comportamiento, originando la Especificación y Simulación Funcional, resultados con los cuales se toma la decisión de establecer la Arquitectura del Sistema, la cual da base para el diseño del hardware y software, los cuales se evalúan contra la Arquitectura establecida.
In the hardware and software design, the Platform-Based Design is incorporated, where designs are reused, favoring the construction of functionalities, from digital components that are families adaptable among them.
En el Diseño del hardware y software se incorpora el Basado en Plataformas, donde se reutilizan diseños propiciando la construcción de funcionalidades, a partir de componentes digitales que son familias adaptables entre ellos.
Here the functional and non-functional requirements of the system are determined, which were explained in Styled Embedded Systems - Part Four: Constraints and Styled Embedded Systems - Part Four: Constraints- 2. Restrictions due to Application, respectively.
Aquí se determinan los requerimientos funcionales y no funcionales del sistema, los cuales se explicaron en Sistemas Empotrados con Estilo. Parte Cuatro: Restrictiones y Sistemas Empotrados con Estilo. Parte Cuatro: Restrictiones – 2. Restricciones debido a la Aplicación, respectivamente
It is worth noting that the development of the ES considered here, does not reach the prototype and evaluation of this. It is reached an integration of all its functional modules both in Hardware and Software which I call Pilot.
Vale la pena señalar, que el desarrollo del SE considerado aquí, no alcanza el prototipo y evaluación de este. Se llega a una integración de todos sus módulos funcionales tanto en Hardware como en Software al cual le denomino Piloto.
Restrictions due to the Application Environment
Restricciones debido al Entorno de la Aplicación.
Figure 1 shows the posture, without going into detail, of an athlete during the trajectory of his walk. It is possible to go from flat terrain to an upward or downward slope, which has a direct impact on the postures to be adjusted during the execution.
En la Figura 1 se muestra la postura, sin entrar en detalles, de un deportista durante la trayectoria de su caminata. Donde se puede pasar de un terreno plano a uno inclinado hacia arriba o hacia abajo, asunto que incide directamente en las posturas a ajustar durante la ejecución.

Size and Weight.
The instrument should be portable on the athlete's clothing, either in a cap or in a headband approximately 5 cm wide. Therefore its dimensions should not be invasive and cause any disturbance when incorporated.
Tamaño y Peso.
El instrumento debe ser portable en la vestimenta del deportista, ya sea en una gorra o en sudadera de cabeza (frentera) de aproximadamente 5 cm de ancho. Por tanto sus dimensiones no deben ser invasivas y causar alguna perturbación al ser incorporadas.
Operational Environment.
The operating scenarios of the device will not be outdoors. However, the sensors will be exposed. Being in a head sweatshirt, the humidity caused by the sports activity itself, should not cause a malfunction. In addition, it must be shockproof.
Ambiente Operacional.
Los escenarios de operación del dispositivo no estarán a la intemperie. No obstante, los sensores si estarán expuestos. Al estar en una sudadera de cabeza, la humedad ocasionada por la propia actividad deportiva, no debe ocasionar un mal funcionamiento. Además, debe ser anti choque.
Signal behavior.
The acquisition and generation of signals and data come from the devices that interact with the environment. At least one analog temperature sensor, a digital inclination sensor, and an ultrasound sensor that will provide the distance traveled by the athlete must be available. In addition, other circuit elements are necessary for the respective design.
Comportamiento de las señales.
La adquisición y generación de señales y datos provienen de los dispositivos que interaccionan con el entorno. Se debe disponer, como mínimo de un sensor de temperatura de carácter analógico, un sensor de inclinación digital y un sensor de ultrasonido que proporcionará la distancia recorrida por el deportista. Además, de otros elementos circuitales que hagan falta para el respectivo diseño.
The acquisition of the respective data must be guaranteed, as well as the preparation of the data to be sent through a wireless communication channel. The internal operation or status data that give the conditions of the device and even for its adjustment or calibration will be dealt with later.
Se debe garantizar la adquisición de los respectivos datos, así como también, la preparación de los datos para su envío por un canal de comunicación inalámbrico. Los datos internos de operación o estado que dan las condiciones del dispositivo e inclusive para su ajuste o calibración serán tratados más adelante.
Energy.
The instrument will have an autonomous power supply system based on solar panels for its operation. This will be managed with the facilities and resources focused on the general architecture. In addition, batteries are required for its performance, which implies a greater autonomy of operation time.
Energéticas.
El instrumento dispondrá de un sistema autónomo de alimentación de energía basada en paneles solares para su operación. Este será manejado con las facilidades y recursos que se enfocan en la arquitectura general. Además, necesitan baterías para su desenvolvimiento, lo que implica una mayor autonomía del tiempo de operación.
Temporal.
The instrument will respond to changes in the environment and its response times will be adequate for its operation. In this case, real-time is not considered. However, the ES could be designed under the premises of a Cyclic Executive Scheduler. A subject that I explained in a post dedicated to it (Alfonsi, 2021).
Temporales.
El instrumento responderá a los cambios que suceden en el entorno y sus tiempos de respuesta será el adecuado para su operación. En este caso, no se considera el tiempo real. Aun cuando, podría diseñarse el SE bajo premisas de un Planificador Ejecutivo Cíclico. Asunto que expliqué en un post dedicado a ello (Alfonsi, 2021).
Data Security.
It is a dedicated environment and the conditions of the data or information obtained must have the respective security. That is to say, it consists of having confidential and authenticated data security functionalities.
Seguridad de Datos.
Es un ambiente dedicado y es importante que las condiciones de los datos o información obtenida tengan la seguridad respectiva. Es decir, consiste en disponer de funcionalidades de seguridad de datos confidencial y autentificada.
Restrictions due to the Application.
Restricciones debido a la Aplicación.
It is subject to the devices that will form the ES and are coupled to the Architecture vision for the design. In this particular case, the embedded platform based on microcontrollers Arduino is imposed, whose information can be found on its official site. Figure 2 presents the base Arduino boards.
Está sujeta a los dispositivos que formarán al SE y está acoplado a la visión de la Arquitectura para el diseño. En este caso particular, se impone la plataforma empotrada basada en microcontroladores Arduino, cuya información se encuentra en su sitio oficial. En la Figura 2 se presentan las tarjetas de Arduino bases.

Therefore, the Arduino Uno Rev 3 Card System is taken as the hardware basis for processing for the design stage. The system is based on the ATmega328P (Atmel Corporation, 2015) and has the appropriate facilities and resources at a general level.
Por tanto, se toma como base del Hardware para el procesamiento el Sistema de Tarjeta Arduino Uno Rev 3 para la etapa de diseño. El sistema está basado en el ATmega328P (Atmel Corporation, 2015) y posee las facilidades y recursos adecuados a nivel general.
For the integration stage of the pilot device, the microcontroller board Arduino Mini 04, based on the ATmega328 microcontroller, will be used.
Para la etapa de integración del dispositivo piloto se usará la placa de microcontrolador Arduino Mini 04, basada en el microcontrolador ATmega328.
It is necessary to consider the behavior of the modules and their properties that will accompany the Arduino concerning the Constraints due to the Application Environment, which must be present in the decision of the platform indicated above.
Hay que considerar el comportamiento de los módulos y sus propiedades que acompañarán al Arduino referentes a las Restricciones debida al Ambiente de la Aplicación, que deben estar presentes en la decisión de la plataforma arriba indicada.
To carry them out, the processing, storage, communication, inputs, and outputs must be based on the system and the development process.
Para llevarlas a cabo se debe fundamentar lo referente al procesamiento, almacenamiento, comunicación, entradas y salidas según el sistema y, el proceso de desarrollo.
From the base microcontroller, the input voltage is limited to 5V and 3.3 V, as well as the following characteristics:
Flash Memory: 32 kB (ATmega328P) of which 0.5 kB used by bootloader.
Static RAM (SRAM): 2 kB (ATmega328P).
CLOCK SPEED: 16 MHz.
DC Current Per I/O Pin: 20 mA.
DC Current for 3.3V PIN: 50 mA.
Del microcontrolador base se limita el voltaje de entrada a 5V y 3,3 V, así como también las siguientes características:
Memoria Flash: 32 KB (ATmega328P) de los cuales 0,5 kB son utilizados por el bootloader.
RAM Static (SRAM): 2 KB (ATmega328P).
Velocidad de Reloj: 16 MHz.
Corriente DC por Pines de E/S: 20 mA.
Corriente DC Pin 3,3 V: 50 mA.
From the behavior of the signals, a Temperature Sensor will be placed, whose requirements must be: 5 V or 3.3 V supply voltage, an analog input for the delivery of the signal which will be treated in the microcontroller and a ground connection.
Del comportamiento de las señales, se colocará de un Sensor de Temperatura, cuyos requerimientos deben ser: voltaje de alimentación 5V o 3,3 V, una entrada analógica para la entrega de la señal la cual será tratada en el microcontrolador y una conexión a tierra.
To comply with the terrain inclination detection, a Digital Inclination Sensor, 4-way detector, must be available. Its power supply requirements are 5 V or 3.3 V, two digital inputs (the usual for this type of component), and a ground connection.
Para cumplir con la detección de inclinación del terreno se debe disponer de un Sensor de Inclinación Digital, detector de 4 direcciones. Siendo sus requerimientos de alimentación de 5 V o o 3,3 V, dos entradas digitales (lo habitual en este tipo de componente) y una conexión a tierra.
Regarding the measurement of the distance traveled by the athlete, an ultrasound sensor will be used, which in this case, being a pilot device, its measurement range can be less than or equal to 4 m. The power supply requirements may be 5 V or 3.3 V, a digital input and output (common in this type of sensor), and a ground connection.
Respecto a la medición de la distancia recorrida por el deportista se utilizará un sensor de ultrasonido, que en este caso por ser un dispositivo piloto su rango de medición puede ser menor o igual a 4 m. Los requerimientos de alimentación podrán ser de 5 V o 3,3 V, una entrada y salida digital (común en este tipo de sensores) y una conexión a tierra.
For the use of wireless communication, XBee wireless modules with their respective connection cards will be available.
Para la utilización de comunicación inalámbrica se dispondrá de módulos inalámbricos XBee con sus respectivas tarjetas de conexión.
The device will have an autonomous energy supply system based on solar panels for its operation, in addition to batteries for its performance, which implies a greater autonomy of operation time.
El dispositivo dispondrá de un sistema autónomo de alimentación de energía basada en paneles solares para su operación, además de baterías para su desenvolvimiento, lo que implica una mayor autonomía del tiempo de operación.
If applicable, a DC-DC voltage converter will be incorporated, which has the function of delivering a constant output voltage higher than the input voltage in the face of input or load voltage variations.
Si es el caso, se incorporará un convertidor de voltaje DC-DC, que tiene como función entregar un voltaje de salida constante superior al voltaje de entrada frente a variaciones del voltaje de entrada o de carga.
The device will respond to changes in the environment and its response times will be adequate for its operation. In this case, real time is not essential. Although, a Cyclic Executive Scheduler could be incorporated (Alfonsi, 2021).
El dispositivo responderá a los cambios que suceden en el entorno y sus tiempos de respuesta será el adecuado para su operación. En este caso, no se hace imprescindible el tiempo real. Aunque, se pudiera incorporar un Planificador Ejecutivo Cíclico (Alfonsi, 2021).
Regarding data security, as it is a dedicated environment, there will be low data security functionalities, only to leave these operations-oriented in the SE modules to be performed later on.
Respecto a la seguridad de los datos, como es un ambiente dedicado se dispondrán de bajas funcionalidades de seguridad de datos, solo con la finalidad de dejar orientada estas operaciones en el módulos del SE para realizarse más adelante.
Methodological facilities and computational tools.
Facilidades metodológicas y herramientas computacionales.
Here we integrate a set of methodological schemes aided by computational tools that facilitate the route to fulfillment of the requirements. Specifically, to give body to the ES we use Top-Down.
Aquí se integran conjuntos de esquemas metodológicos ayudados de herramientas computacionales que facilitan la ruta para el cumplimiento los requerimientos. En específico, para darle cuerpo al SE utilizamos Top-Down.
The principle of modularity will be applied, dividing the system into components or modules, which are integrated to satisfy the requirements of the problem. In addition, the reuse of modules or elements of the same is present. The idea is to provide modular comprehensibility.
Se aplicará el principio de modularidad, al dividir el sistema en componentes o módulos, que se integran para satisfacer los requisitos del problema. Además, se hace presente la reutilización de módulos o elementos del mismo. La idea es proporcionar la capacidad de comprensión modular.
The trend is to use an Overall Software Structure (OSS), which according to Pressman and Maxim (2019) and, Sommerville (2018), is the set of provisions, rules, and patterns that constrain the design and realization of software, based on which problems can be solved in sufficient detail to enable coding.
La tendencia es usar una Estructura Global de Software (EGS), que según Pressman y Maxim (2019) y Sommerville (2018), es el conjunto de disposiciones, reglas y patrones que restringen el diseño y la realización de un software, con base a las cuales se puedan resolver problemas con suficientes detalles para permitir su codificación.
Then, an EGS based on models supported by Data Flow Diagrams (DFD) is applied. In our case, mikroSTR OSS (Alfonsi et al., 2015) is used respecting the limits of information flow-oriented methodologies.
Entonces, se aplica una EGS basada en modelos apoyados en Diagramas de Flujo de Datos (DFD). En nuestro caso, se utiliza la EGS mikroSTR (Alfonsi et al., 2015) respetando los límites de las metodologías orientadas al flujo de información.
For its part, Arduino has a cross-platform integrated development environment (IDE) support and is written in the Java programming language (Figure 3). It is used to write and load programs on Arduino systems. Currently, version 1.8.16 is current.
Por su parte, Arduino tiene un soporte del entorno de desarrollo integrado (IDE) que multiplataforma y está escrita en el lenguaje de programación Java (Figura 3). Se utiliza para escribir y cargar programas en sistemas de Arduino. Actualmente, se encuentra vigente la versión 1.8.16.

Particularly, I defend the idea of introducing in the development of ES the basis for the use of disciplined methods oriented to obtain a product under methodologies that should lead to better results with quality.
Particularmente, defiendo la idea de introducir en el desarrollo de SE las bases para la utilización de métodos disciplinados orientados a la obtención de un producto bajo metodologías que debe conducir a mejores resultados con calidad.
From the above, the Traditional Approach will be the framework for the realization and continuity of the ES. It is accompanied by the Platform-Based. Both explained in the post Styled Embedded Systems. Part 5: Development Methodology. -1.- Conventional Approach.
De lo anterior, el Enfoque Tradicional será el marco para la realización y continuidad del SE. Es acompañado del Basado en Plataformas. Ambos explicados en el post Styled Embedded Systems. Part 5: Development Methodology. -1.- Conventional Approach.
Of course, the use of computational tools to carry out the next stages of the approach adopted for both the simulation and its design is not ruled out.
Por supuesto, no se descarta la utilización de herramientas computacionales para llevar a cabo los estadios siguientes del enfoque adoptado tanto para la simulación, como para su diseño.

The first stage refers to the System Specification, a matter of interest that is often overlooked. However, it gives the necessary guidelines for the design of an ES.
Se desarrolla el primer estadio referido a la Especificación del Sistema, asunto de interés, que muchas veces es pasado por alto. Sin embargo, es que da los lineamientos necesarios para el diseño de un SE.
The ES was set with an approach that I have characterized and limited by its extensive scope, sufficient for the understanding of what is being sought. All under a Conventional Approach.
Se ambientó el SE con un planteamiento dentro del deporte de la Caminata. Por supuesto, que he caracterizado y limitado su alcance por lo extenso de su realidad, suficiente para la comprensión de lo que se busca. Todo bajo un Enfoque Convencional.
